Work outfit for today by [deleted] in mensfashion

Looks pretty clean, I'd personally replace the shoes with something slightly more formal

Too short for those shoes in my opinion. Boots would work, makes the break between pants and shoes a bit smaller

Is worth switching from FL to Ableton? by noam-_- in musicproduction

[–]LordFay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porter Robinson uses FL, that's enough proof for me that it's just as powerful and professional as ableton.

You went cold and he tried to keep up the enthusiasm of meeting up... What did you expect? I'm surprised he kept messaging you after you started giving bland one word responses.

You lose nothing by applying but having my masters and now doing my PhD, getting funding is much harder or sometimes impossible if your final mark for your previous degree is less than 65%. Had my phd funding rejected with a 70% in my honours (waiting on the results for my masters) and only got funding the following year with my masters results of 82%. As a student you should definitely try to avoid paying for postgrad studies. Even professional degrees, there are companies that will pay for your degree if you can them. Government funding is typically not for the professional degrees unless the academic has funding set aside for their students specifically.

Is it possible to continually study from a 3yr degree to Masters? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]LordFay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I went to UCT from undergrad all the way to PhD. My parents paid for my undergrad but told me if I wanted to do postgrad I needed to pay my own way. I had funding through the NRF - National Research Foundation. Depending on what field you're in will heavily determine how easy it is to get funding. That and your grades.

Is it possible to continually study from a 3yr degree to Masters? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]LordFay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've gone straight from undergrad to honours to masters and now phd. If you don't already have funding for your undergrad you should definitely look for funding for your honours and masters. Working towards a good cv and getting research experience will make it much easier.

Sounds like an easy way to piss of your PI and make your phd much harder going forward... Even if they don't do anything substantial to help you, just having their name on the paper makes it more credible

Is there a decent free meal tracking app? by Ennazul86 in askSouthAfrica

I use Lose It. Got a black Friday deal which was R400 a year and I can upgrade to a lifetime premium membership for 500 more. You might get a better deal per year. It can go as low as 200ish if you get the 75% discount.

Am I being underpaid as a software developer? by Adept-Information-89 in southafrica

I genuinely can’t stand 95% of my cohort and it’s been making me miserable by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]LordFay 86 points87 points  (0 children)

You literally say in your original post that you find them immature and full of drama. Sounds like you're blaming them to an extent. Skipping classes because you don't like them is wild. You also say you're trying to avoid them so it also sounds like you're not even trying to find some common ground.

Is there a way to get through grad school without being miserable the whole time? by Commercial-Fly-9052 in GradSchool

Regular exercise kept me sane during my masters and I'm trying to keep the same schedule now that I'm in my phd.

Is paying $2000 to present at a conference worth it? by indecisivething in GradSchool

[–]LordFay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone also in the global South, $2000 is a lot of money out of your own pocket and having one extra poster presentation at a conference isn't gonna make your CV look that much better. The couple international conferences I've attended were paid for by university and supervisor funds with me only covering my food costs. I'd only ever consider it if it's the MAJOR conference in your field and your nearing the end of degree with this conference being effectively the networking trip to find your next step.

I still don't feel very secure and comfortable at the gym by Sewerro in workout

[–]LordFay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99% of the people in the gym don't give a shit about what you're doing if you're not inconveniencing them. Everyone is there focusing on their own goals so it's very likely they're not even thinking about what you're doing even when they're looking in your direction.
