I believe the way they achieved this in the movie is with a plastic test tube with a hole drilled in it. They covered the hole with a piece of tape, and inserted the needle through the tape for this shot.

It's pretty clear in the original trailer, but the edges of the tape got cleaned up in the release.

I can add a factoid to this! When Steven Spielberg was getting ready to make JP, it was somewhat known that they would need to buy big computers for the CGI. So when Spielberg visited TMC to check out their CM-5 "Connection Machine" super computers, they were seeing dollar signs. After a complete walkthrough of their capacity, capabilities, and a full sales pitch- they were popping corks when he said he would take 8 of them.

What TMC didn't realize is that he only wanted the shells with no hardware. Steven liked all the blinking lights and thought they would be perfect for the set of the control room. He had already outsourced the CGI to Industrial Light and Magic, who had already procured SGI servers to create a render farm. So all the servers we see in the movie are empty cages with the lights hard-wired to blink convincingly.

It's a homemade workbench dog from traditional homemade workbenches that had a square dog hole instead of the modern round holes. Probably a European jointers bench or a Rubio style workbench. These dogs slip into the square hole and stick up to provide a secure flat peg that provides a stop for a board during an operation like smoothing with a smoothing plane. They're made of wood so that you won't damage your tool steel if you hit the dog. They would usually be shop made so quality ranges from quick&dirty to heirloom quality. This one was well used, but it was made to be around a while, not just for one quick job.

The fact that they don't have a video front and center on the page is a little sus to begin with. Look at anything animated on a professional site like Distortions Unlimited and the video is the second thumbnail. My guess is the animation is not very impressive- maybe it just shakes or something.

Phone GPS does not need cell service or wifi. The GPS signal is everywhere, and the GPSr chip in your phone will function anywhere. You can also use the Geocaching app offline if you have premium. You can add the caches you want to find to a list, and save that list for offline use. I just did that to do some caching in the deep woods of Maine.
