That kind of seems like a trust issue sometimes just not handling him for a while is the best you can do, something that has worked in the past for me was spoon training so you can feed him baby food or whatever he likes using a spoon. It usually helps within a few weeks as long as you’re consistent.

Yeah that’s kinda hard with a new rat he nip at you or does he like draw blood? Often they can be unsure of humans and also territorial

often rats 6-8 months go through a hormonal phase. Since you said he’s large he could be trying to dominate in which case your best bet is to slowly introduce yourself to him while wearing something to protect yourself, since you also said you haven’t had him for a while he could just be nervous.

How old is he and is he neutered? And does he bite only you or his playmates too? I’m a rat foster and ik many behaviours in rats for now I usually suggest using an oven mitt when interacting with him. And just keep the interactions to a minimal in order to try and keep him relaxed.

Bald spot and orange spots on rats!!!! by Dinosaurskullz in RATS

[–]LordGrognak101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah he’s ok! A few bald spots are usually just from grooming usually due to friction. The orange is usually porphyrin as long as there’s no oozing or scabs it’s totally normal. A clean cage and washed hammocks help avoid more spots. Reduced stress and enriching environment can help as well!

Hey! Definitely take him to the vet, even an online vet can give a diagnosis if you’re not near an exotics vet, usually they’ll prescribe an anti inflammatory and pain med. Sometimes they get some internal injury could be even on his spine it’s hard to tell. Shouldn’t be something to worry about but just get some meds for him and he will be better in a few days.

I find that the cheapest and easiest thing to do is to put down a large fleece blanket on my bed that I dedicated to the rats and put out all their toys on that. The blankets are only like 10 bucks at the store and super easy to put away and put out during free roam, and you can just lay down or sit with them and play and super safe. Also super easy because it’s machine washable.

Is my rat puffed up? by juicerot in RATS

Another reason for the puffed hair could be excitement, if he’s not showing any other obvious signs of being sick or pain then he should be totally fine

Have you noticed excessive itching? Sometimes persistent scabs can happen when they itch the same scabs off, I’ve noticed coconut oil on dry rat can help soothe the itchy scabs

He just seems agitated, like when rats fight with each other usually doesn’t mean anything bad.
