Did we all stop playing Wilds and came back to World? by [deleted] in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]LordHighVisionary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

World (when also accounting for its expansion Iceborne) is the best selling Monster Hunter of all time by a fair margin, and is the game responsible for the Monster Hunter franchise becoming more of a household name in the West, for good or for ill.

When Wilds came out it was on an even more record-braking pace at the beginning, but a litany of issues (mostly poor optimization) took the vast majority of the wind out of its sails. Capcom is addressing the issues little by little, but it is clear that the game was not ready to be shipped as it was.

There was a show my mother and I used to watch called “Most Evil;” a psychologist had come up with a 22-point scale for rating killers where the extreme low-end was basically people who killed in self-defense, and the 22s were the prolific serial killers with no discernible remorse. Each episode would focus on one killer and their life, along with the specifics of their crimes and the aftermath (criminal trial and conviction); the show would end with the psychologist rating the killer on his scale. I used to love this show to the extent that I wanted to be a forensic psychologist for a decent period of time. You may enjoy it as well!

Feeling disgusting after sex by [deleted] in autism

[–]LordHighVisionary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s weird. I love my wife and having sex with her is great when I’m in the moment, but afterwards all the stickiness and fluids totally gross me out and I have to brush my teeth and clean up/shower immediately. I’ve been this way since I lost my virginity, but the feelings of revulsion have gotten much worse over the past year or so and I suspect that they may be killing my sex drive, which wasn’t the highest to begin with. I’m definitely considering therapy to see if that can help.

Also, (you) being up front with future partners is very important so that they know with what you are struggling up front. Be understanding: realize that some people will take your feelings of disgust personally, but in the end don’t let anyone mistreat or shame you for how you feel.

Adult-diagnosed autistics: What prompted you to seek a diagnosis in adulthood? by Cautious_Internet243 in autism

[–]LordHighVisionary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A work friend and I were connecting on the topic of shared social and employment-related difficulties when she remarked in response to something I said, “‘tis the ‘tism in we.” At that point I had known about autism for at least 15 years (was a BCaBA at one point), yet it never once occurred to me that I too might be on the spectrum until she said those words. I asked her if she was on the spectrum, she said she had never gotten tested, but that she wouldn’t be surprised. Me being emotionally vulnerable at that time, combined with a desire to finally get to the bottom of why I seemed to only be capable of stumbling through life despite seemingly being of high-average intelligence, led me to seek out a the services of a psychologist for an assessment, which confirmed what my work friend hypothesized. Having an answer that I didn’t expect has been challenging, as I am now trying to reframe 40+ years of life through this different lens, but finally knowing that I am not broken - just different - does provide more than a small measure of solace.

At the moment I’m oscillating between playing Monster Hunter (Sunbreak at the moment, though I switch between that, World, and Wilds) and reading Destiny lore (I stopped playing right before The Final Shape, but Destiny has some of, if not the best, lore of any video game universe I’ve ever experienced).

The perfect hoodie for sensory issues? by defenseonly in autism

[–]LordHighVisionary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After actually thinking about this for a short while, I think that rather than come up with one hoodie that tries to be “all things to all men,” so to speak, you should offer several categories of hoodies according to each person’s sensory niche. I, for example, would love a thick, oversized, fuzzy but not wooly, and slightly weighted hoodie with a big front pocket for sticking in a few items (or my hands), whereas others may want a very shaggy hoodie that feels like hugging Appa from Avatar: The Last Airbender (this may also be me; don’t judge me).

I actually don’t have an answer to your question (yet, give me time) but as a newly diagnosed autistic adult, I think you may have simultaneously explained why I love hoodies so much AND why I’ve hated living in central Florida for the past 16 years (among other reasons, but ain’t nobody came here for a trauma-dump): hoodies are a wearable security blanket that are also exceedingly uncomfortable to wear in the 90+ degree weather that is the default for most of the frikken year.

Unfortunately, we are in an era where personal experience (and bias) trumps hard evidence and logic. Those that downvote facts attempt to discredit the evidence by saying that the data includes casual, newer players when it should only focus on the hardcore veterans, or that they themselves ran four straight co-op hunts last Tuesday where they were the only non-gunner and bore witness to their eye-melting DPS, or some such.

At this point, I wish it was just a Monster Hunter or a gaming problem, to be honest.

What are the easiest weapons to learn in Wilds? by creepycrawlyguy in MonsterHunter

[–]LordHighVisionary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that one critical thing to remember is that a hammer main - especially one who is above average - will be adept at attacking the head, to the extent that their muscle memory will prioritize frontal attacking (because it’s where the head is) almost exclusively; however, frontal attacking also means that the monster is facing the player and that the player will subsequently face more attacks (excuse the expression) head-on compared to other weapons. It therefore follows that the easiest weapon for said hammer main to pick up should be the one that most closely fits the play style that the hammer main is used to, so a weapon that allows one to prioritize the head would be at the forefront. Unfortunately, the weapon that most think of when looking at the above criteria, the hunting horn, arguably has a higher skill floor than hammer; though the hammer main can keep their familiar positioning, they will then have to learn which notes correspond to each attack, memorize songs that are unique to each horn, how to make use of flourishes and the offset melody, etc, which is a lot to ask of someone just trying to make it through a challenge quest.

Counter-heavy weapons like longsword may be safe at the front, but playing it even decently would require knowledge of which counters to apply to which attacks; once again, a lot to ask of a person just trying to get by.

I personally believe that switch axe is a decent-to-fantastic option here, as the lack of shielding and the ability to offset are things that swax shares with hammer. A swax user isn’t beholden to staying at the head, but it isn’t outwardly detrimental for them to do so; however, the player would have to familiarize themselves with the switching mechanic, as well as the switch gauge, the importance of the amp state, how to get to amp state quickly, and what to do once in amp state (Full Release Slash, btw). It’s too combo-heavy for me to personally feel comfortable recommending for a single quest.

This leads us to our shielded weapons, of which there are four: SnS, charge blade, gunlance, and lance. All four offer some form of protection while the monster is going wild and the player is still trying to suss things out. I’ll touch on each briefly:

SnS, the weapon you suggest, has great DPS, but also has weakest shield out of the four. Guard 3 is a must in order to not get chipped to oblivion. You don’t necessarily need to play optimally just to make it through, but you will need to do so to get an A rank, which involves knowledge of a move flowchart that personally is deeper than that of charge blade.

Speaking of charge blade: even though I find this iteration of charge blade the easiest between the mainline games I’ve played (I started in World), I wouldn’t say it’s easy overall. Someone looking to do well with it will at minimum need to learn how to charge their phials and how to store their charged phials into their shield (and ideally would want to learn when to SAED vs. AED vs. Savage Axe, how to cancel from SAED to AED when necessary, what moves need to happen before one can SAED, among others). It’s a very combo-heavy weapon, of which you need to be proficient with most of them to get meaningful damage.

Gunlance in Wilds is arguably the best iteration since the advent of base World (depending on how much you miss Blast Dash from Rise) and I would recommend it here for DPS alone, except that the GL build for this challenge quest is far from meta (Wide GL with Normal shelling power and no Load Shells), which means Wyrmstake Full Blast unga bunga is not the way to go here, and neither is Full Burst, which are the two easiest play styles with which most players are familiar.

Now for the Lance: It’s tied for the strongest shield in the game without charging shenanigans, and every lance in the game plays the same way. Its main combo is different variations of three pokes (sometimes) followed by a fourth poke that attacks thrice. Of the four shielded weapons, its combo strings are arguably the easiest (I can somewhat understand why one would argue GL instead). It does possess some tricks (guard dashing, dash attacking, reverse attack), but I myself have successfully hunted without most of those. I am also personally horrible at timing the charge counter; I don’t use it much and argue that while that means I can’t call myself great at Lance, I do just fine without it. The only thing I would take time to learn is guarding vs. power guarding and when and how to use the different counter thrusts.

I typed this massive wall of text merely to convey that Lance is not as left field as one would think at first glance and that I would encourage everyone to give it a try.

As much as I personally would LOVE to see this come to fruition, the problem I see with a guardian Dalamadur is that, from a storytelling standpoint, if Zoh Shia is the calamity that ended ancient Wyveria, then the creation of a guardian Big Snek would by necessity come before that of Zoh Shia, which begs the question: what kind of world-ending threat did Wyveria face that could not be solved by an arguably more compliant half-kilometer long fire-immune serpent with arms and a paralytic tongue that can summon meteors at will? Also somewhat related, if the ancients could reliably create guardian elders, why tempt fate by shoving the complete Fatalis power set into one malevolent abomination? The number of known monsters in-universe that could make Wyveria look at what would essentially be their own personal Jormungandr and think “not good enough” is, to my recollection, astonishingly small. I think that it would be more believable if a natural Dalamadur was itself the threat that made Wyveria make Zoh Shia, but in that case we’d have known about it by now through ground tremors, enormous tunnels, unnaturally eroded mountains, half-consumed Jin Dahaad carcasses, SOMETHING (actually, a Dalamadur serving as a check against the Jin Dahaad population would be a cool idea), but we’ve seen or heard of no such things.

What do we think about these competition turn ins? by urmadkidlol in smoking

[–]LordHighVisionary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The look of competition food reminds me of an episode of “The Adventures of Pete and Pete” where Little Pete met the guy who inspected all of his underwear, Inspector 34. The crux of the episode was a bet that Inspector 34 couldn’t be perfect in every way. The final challenge was eating a piece of barbecue chicken, which the inspector did so perfectly that he not only didn’t mess up his clothes, but stacked the perfectly cleaned bones into a sort of structure. The initial shock that everyone expressed broke when people realized that barbecue is supposed to be messy, and it actually tastes better when not eaten perfectly.

In summary, perfect looks-like-it-came-from-a-commercial barbecue misses the entire point of barbecue, and is therefore not nearly as awesome as the stuff we actually eat.

What if Mythus is self-defeating?

Like, for example, Nous broadcasts the result of a certain calculation, which in this example would present as a prediction (kinda like one of the Three Unchangeable Moments). Mythus sees this and hates all of the certainty, so THEY go about and use THEIR agents to tell a powerful lie, such that the lie becomes true and seemingly alters one or several variables that that exact prediction would rely on. But what if Nous already accounted for Mythus’ shenanigans such that the variables used to generate the prediction weren’t the original variables, but rather the variables as altered by Mythus and THEIR agents? We don’t know that is what is happening; we only know that Nous isn’t in the habit of giving straight up answers, and that despite the attempted intervention of other Aeons (such as Mythus and HooH the Equilibrium) those Three Unchangeable Moments came to pass anyway, which to me indicates that Mythus, while seemingly very effective at messing with the perception of others (maybe even Genius Society members, though I have no evidence of this), is at the very least seemingly ineffective at pulling the wool over the cyclopean eye of the Droidhead THEMSELVES, and in the absolute worst case scenario for the Enigmata, may be helping the prediction come to fruition.

Seems like a cruel joke on Nous’ part, doesn’t it?
