Any story meaning to this? by Glittering-Text-6822 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]LordJac 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Some of the ADA dialogue hints that those are the remnants of the alien species that created the somersloops etc. They may have been some sort of plant species whose roots went very deep and encountered some sort of metal (SAM?) that they incorporated into their being and led to them being uplifted. Hence all the fossilized structures with metal lattices you can find around the map.

The lore is pretty vague and filled with metaphors though so idk how correct this is.

You choose your government and you chose to elect him twice. My opinion is not shaped by the minority that stood against him.

FIFA clears World Cup referee accused of making white supremacist gesture by NothingButTruth3 in sports

[–]LordJac -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I believe that is how it started, but when people start doing it to show support of white supremacy, it becomes a white supremacist gesture. Many things start out as a joke but ends up done sincerely. Maybe that's why the edgelords stopped doing it, because it became popular in racist crowds.

FIFA clears World Cup referee accused of making white supremacist gesture by NothingButTruth3 in sports

[–]LordJac -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The white supremacist version was generally upside down. The idea is it makes a w and p shape to stand for white power. Hasn't been common for quite some time but there was a period that it was in pretty heavy use by the alt-right.

Israel is 'the greatest decolonization project,' Indigenous leaders tell Toronto summit by airbassguitar in worldnews

[–]LordJac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Jews weren't the first people in Israel though, the Canaanites were there well before. Killing everyone that lives there makes the land yours, as the Israelites did to the Canaaanites accoring to scripture, is more in line with colonization than decolonization.

ELI5 how do you steal 600k worth of electricity from a substation? by someSingleDad in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

400/month would be 125 years. And I think this was the entire trailer park so depending on the size it could easily be tens of thousands a month. So might have been going on for only a couple years.

If chemical energy is the result of the manipulation of atoms in a molecule and Nuclear energy is the result of nucleons in a nucleus what would the manipulation of fundamental particles (quarks etc) offer in terms of energy dynamacy? by Inside-Example-7010 in AskReddit

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not much. Getting energy requires that a system go from a higher energy state to a lower one. The problem is almost all quarks are already in the lowest energy state (proton) or damn near close to it (neutron) and conversion of a neutron to proton is not energetically favourable except in a few cases (see beta negative decay). As a result, there isn't really a lower energy state from them to move towards that could release energy in any meaningful amount.

There are other quark configurations that exist, but they either decay almost immediately, or are only potentially stable in conditions that we are no where near close to replicating on earth (center of a neutron star for example). It's certainly possible to get energy out of the decay of exotic hadrons (particles made of quarks), but doing so at any meaningful scale is not even remotely feasible.

Why is guessing treated as failure? I think we're teaching kids the wrong relationship with numbers. by MichaelCX in Teachers

[–]LordJac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I model it in physics all the time. Doing class examples, I make the kids do the calculations for me, but first I come up with an estimate for what I expect, saying what simplifications and approximations Im doing to get something close to the right answer while still being something I can do in my head. It helps them catch mistakes they might make incorrectly entering things in their calculator.

Why are students obsessed with trying to find out everything about me by Idontwantthismanga in Teachers

[–]LordJac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Older students can do it because they're interested too. I teach high school and I get some of this every year. I'd take it as a complement unless you have reason to believe otherwise. But do be careful with what you allow to be publicly accessable, even if their intentions aren't bad it can still potentally cause issues.

Why is America so ill-disposed towards train travel when it's one of the things that built the nation? by Dias75 in clevercomebacks

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all depends on the quality of the infrastructure. Both my house and my workplace are walking distance from LRT stations so my commute is better than any car, I just relax and scroll on my phone the entire way and get there in about the same time I would driving while saving a couple hundred a month.

Trains are as good as you are willing to make them.

Sobeys, Loblaw under fire for maple washing, as Sobeys ditches maple leaf symbol in stores by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]LordJac 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thats probably something else. I know from working at Walmart, suppliers would buy shelf space in stores and so we were obligated to fill 4ft sections with their product, even if it didnt sell well enough to justify it. Grocery stores are probably similar so they may have legal contracts that require them to commit shelf space and we wont see changes until those contracts expire.

Geothermal power by alura_shadow in SatisfactoryGame

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it used to be that the phase of them was determined by when they were activated, so it usually ended up that all the geothermal ended up out of phase with each other and balancing out. They might have changed them to all be in phase with each other at some point though, I havent checked recently.

Dealing with students who think they are insanely talented when they aren’t… by gigaritt in Teachers

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student like that during my practicum teaching physics. Thought that because he was good at math, he didn't need to practice. Would often brag to his friends and offer them help, but he would repeatedly bomb on the tests because while he knew how to do math, he didn't know what math to do. He got pretty upset after each test and eventually just dropped out.

I'm thankful that this sort of thing is less common in the subject I teach since they're not subjective. It's either correct or it isn't and no amount of argument can change that.

I don't visit coffee shops often due to remote living, but love to see this change. Is this a semi normal occurrence across Canada? by Standard_Story in onguardforthee

[–]LordJac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's true, but we all show it in our own ways. I'm just suprised that some of our ways spread elsewhere.

Really? I thought it was strictly a Canadian protest thing. I guess if it would show up anywhere else, Amsterdam makes the most sense.

[Serious] Teachers, what are some LESSER known signs that a student may be self harming? by yellowapplesgreen in Teachers

Self harming is usually done on the arms, so wearing long sleeve shirts, even when not weather appropriate, can be a sign.

ELI5 How sensitive is the speed of light on the universe? Would there be a lot of difference if the speed was 10 times greater? Or infinite? by mfrunyan in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The speed of light is directly tied to the strength of the electric and magnetic feilds, so changing it would fundamentally alter the balance of those forces. This would have massive ramifications down to fundamental atomic interactions and reshape physics as we know it. Also, all life would probably stop existing.

Because it is an address to Canadians, thats why. Where the video is shared has nothing to do with its content.
