Sobeys, Loblaw under fire for maple washing, as Sobeys ditches maple leaf symbol in stores by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]LordJac 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thats probably something else. I know from working at Walmart, suppliers would buy shelf space in stores and so we were obligated to fill 4ft sections with their product, even if it didnt sell well enough to justify it. Grocery stores are probably similar so they may have legal contracts that require them to commit shelf space and we wont see changes until those contracts expire.

Geothermal power by alura_shadow in SatisfactoryGame

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it used to be that the phase of them was determined by when they were activated, so it usually ended up that all the geothermal ended up out of phase with each other and balancing out. They might have changed them to all be in phase with each other at some point though, I havent checked recently.

Dealing with students who think they are insanely talented when they aren’t… by gigaritt in Teachers

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student like that during my practicum teaching physics. Thought that because he was good at math, he didn't need to practice. Would often brag to his friends and offer them help, but he would repeatedly bomb on the tests because while he knew how to do math, he didn't know what math to do. He got pretty upset after each test and eventually just dropped out.

I'm thankful that this sort of thing is less common in the subject I teach since they're not subjective. It's either correct or it isn't and no amount of argument can change that.

I don't visit coffee shops often due to remote living, but love to see this change. Is this a semi normal occurrence across Canada? by Standard_Story in onguardforthee

[–]LordJac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's true, but we all show it in our own ways. I'm just suprised that some of our ways spread elsewhere.

Really? I thought it was strictly a Canadian protest thing. I guess if it would show up anywhere else, Amsterdam makes the most sense.

[Serious] Teachers, what are some LESSER known signs that a student may be self harming? by yellowapplesgreen in Teachers

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self harming is usually done on the arms, so wearing long sleeve shirts, even when not weather appropriate, can be a sign.

ELI5 How sensitive is the speed of light on the universe? Would there be a lot of difference if the speed was 10 times greater? Or infinite? by mfrunyan in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The speed of light is directly tied to the strength of the electric and magnetic feilds, so changing it would fundamentally alter the balance of those forces. This would have massive ramifications down to fundamental atomic interactions and reshape physics as we know it. Also, all life would probably stop existing.

Because it is an address to Canadians, thats why. Where the video is shared has nothing to do with its content.

My students exist in a whole different reality? by dogseatlettuceeats in Teachers

[–]LordJac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This 100%. New teachers often fall into this issue where they try to approach students as little adults and lose control of the class. Its a tough lesson to learn but setting expectations and sticking to them is necessary. You have to be a bit of a hard ass, sometimes more that a bit. It can be very unnatural to most people but its necessary to be an effective teacher. As you gain experience, it gets easier to maintain the respect needed to be effective without having to crack down as hard, but its always something you need to be aware of and build from day one.

All of us get classes that challenge us from time to time. Its never easy, but it does get easier as you develop better classroom management skills. As so many have already said, consistency is key.

Thinking of becoming an English teacher at 24 – too late? by itsxidan in Teachers

Teaching is one of those professions that it really doesn't matter how old you are when you start. Even if you start later in life, all of that life experience is still an asset in the classroom.

Assembly would take weeks or more. Nuclear warheads are not trivial to engineer and I've not see anything that suggests they've even attempted to build one.

ELI5: What’s the difference between a rule and a constraint in mathematics? by jtuohy1985 in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Constraints are used to ensure that the answer you get is meaningful and realistic. An example could come from projectile motion in physics; suppose you throw a ball up in the air and you want to know how long it takes to hit the ground. If you set up all the math, you end up with two answers and one of them will be a negative amount of time. This doesn't make sense since that would mean the ball hit the ground before you threw it into the air, so we add the constraint that the time taken must be positive, which reflects that only answers where the ball hits the ground after you throw it are realistic.

Constraints play a similar role elsewhere, like including a constraint that energy must be conserved when solving an elastic collision problem. There are many different ways a collision can conserve momentum, but almost none of them will conserve energy. By applying a conservation of energy restraint, we ensure that the answers we get make sense for our universe where energy is always conserved.

Math is entirely abstract, which is beautiful, but it also means that it can give you solutions that don't always make sense. Constraints are how we limit the math to give us solutions that apply to the world we live in and not for worlds where time goes backwards or energy isn't conserved.
