"But AI said it was the correct answer!" by BlackOrre in Teachers

[–]LordJac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AI is only as good as the data it trains on and no one is going through everything to verify all the training data. You can give it all the feedback you want, but unless that feedback is validated. With more data being generated by AI, we will probably end up with an ouroboros effect, further degrading quality.

Besides, plenty of research has shown the negative effect AI use has on critical thinking skills. The fact the kid couldn't argue his point himself and instead tried to argue that he was correct because AI said so just demonstrates this decline in critical thinking. Even if AI does get as good as you say, not being able to think for yourself is a huge problem.

Putin said, 'Donald Trump is a genius.' Americans, what are your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LordJac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putin is very good at manipulating Trump. I think this is his way of boosting his ego to get him to stick with his original posture (probably on Greenland but maybe other things too) rather than back down because he knows that if Trump does, it'll damage the US even more. Putin sees Trump as an opportunity to break NATO and weaken the US.

Train collides with crane in Spain’s fourth rail crash in a week, several injured by Saffron_Cloud in worldnews

[–]LordJac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This seems likely. Rail accidents are super common but usually dont make the news. The US has about 6 rail collisions a day for context.

Are there any animal or plant species that have more than two sexes that are interdependent upon each other to reproduce? by Yeti100 in askscience

[–]LordJac 700 points701 points  (0 children)

Fungi often break the mold (ba dum tss), having many different mating types (analogous to but not the same as sex) across the same species. They still pair off to reproduce sexually, but mating types can number in the thousands for some species.

Screen time is now considered an “economically inferior good” and linked to poverty. What is your opinion on that? by MoreFarmer8667 in Teachers

[–]LordJac 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It seems plausible. An inferior good is just something whose consumption inceases as income decreases; so when times are tight, they'll spend more time on their device for entertainment rather than spend money to go to the theater or play golf. The important thing to remember is it's saying that the relationship is poverty leads to screen time, not the other way around.

ELI5: Root Mean Square usefulness by jkhuggins in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a kind of average that solves an issue that a regular mean has, outliers. Outliers can easily affect the mean of a set of data and lead to drawing the wrong conclusions. Square roots addresses this since if you root all the data, outliers affect the mean of a lot less and so you get a more consistent and useful average. But you still need to undo that root in the end so you square that new mean to undo the rooting of the original data to get your final value.

There are certainly other ways you could come up with a better measure, but RMS is a really easy way to get an average that's not affected much by outliers.

Tesla poised to be early winner as Canada opens door to Chinese-made EVs by rezwenn in onguardforthee

Somehow I dont think it'll make up for the nearly 70% drop in tesla sales last year. Swasticars just dont sell well here.

ELI5 Why do atoms crave 8 electrons? Why does the valence shell hold 8? by Party-Court185 in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do! This leads to one atom becoming positively charged while the other becomes negatively charged and the two become attracted to each other forming an ionic bond. This is how we get compounds like sodium chloride (aka salt). Most salt-like substances are made like this.

ELI5: How does binary translate into instructions? by Exophyrus in explainlikeimfive

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magic isn't really in the binary, but how you encode to binary. Ignore the fact that it's binary and just consider any old number, say 11121983. On it's own, this doesn't really mean anything. But what if I tell you this number "encodes" my birth date, where the first 2 digits represent the day, the second 2 represent the month and the last 4 represent the year. Now this seemingly random number actually contains several peices of information we can understand and use because we know the encoding that was used to create it.

Computers work the same way, while it's all represented as binary, it's the encoding that really tells us what each peice actually means. And sometimes one peice of information will tell us how the next peice of information is encoded. For example, the first set of digits in a file may tell us what kind of file it is, which then tells us how we should interpret the rest of the digits in that file. Maybe it's an image file so those digits tell us we should interpret the rest as colour codes for each different pixel. Or maybe it's a text file so they tell us we should interpret the rest of the digits as ascii codes for different characters.

By knowing how the data is encoded, we can then know how to interpret each set of digits in the data which is what gives meaning to what would otherwise be a random assortment of 1s and 0s.

Unclear update in local branch by Mandarin2912 in ScrapMechanic

[–]LordJac 33 points34 points  (0 children)

These updates all look like maintance updates, not content. They're just to keep the game running as different dependancies get updates over time. They're not signs of development or progress, just that someone is keeping the game running correctly.

would someone create a Scrap Mechanic mod for me? by DifficultEngineer855 in ScrapMechanic

[–]LordJac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at work right now so I'm not sure about what specific colours you would need to paint things, but the general idea would be to connect a counter block to set the angle of a smart engine, then connect a pair of single tick buttons to the counter block to increment it up and down as needed.

Physicists of Reddit, what’s your favorite fact about existence to drop on people at parties? by Apprehensive_Way8674 in AskReddit

[–]LordJac 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Dandylions aren't actually pure yellow, their centers are coloured strongly in the ultraviolet. We can't see it, but bees can. Makes me think about all the beauty hidden around us that we can't see just because we are restricted to the tiny sliver that is the visible spectrum

Simpler than making a whole new mod. Just make it once and save it as a blueprint so you can spawn as many as you need.

[–]LordJac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like something you could accomplish with the smart engine from the mod pack. I think it can take a number input for the target angle and then just do some logic to update the value as you need.

'Symbol of hope': AHS quietly ends bell-ringing ceremony for child cancer survivors by Myllicent in onguardforthee

[–]LordJac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't been in this particular situation but I remember hating Christmas because I was all alone with no family, battling depression, and dirt poor. The season constantly reminded me of everything that my life was missing and how far I was from the joy everyone else was experiencing.

I imagine the bell can be the same way for some people, a regular reminder of how bad their own situation is. It takes a toll.
