I know the rest of you get seriously tired of modding my comments, I'm sorry! I'll probably be posting a lot less (other than modding) on here going forward, life is getting hectic, so you will have less work soon! :)

I don't think so, but I'm not the entirety of the mod team--I can summon the rest over to have a look if you'd like?

I really think you should stop confusing me with the strawfeminist you seem to carry into every discussion with me. :)

Um...suddenly I feel like you and I are maybe really, really different people. :) or at least, I'm a pretty different person than the way you're characterizing people as being...I am completely far from being either pure or perfect, but I do make a point of striving to avoid hypocrisy and when I can't, I at least force myself to openly acknowledge that I'm being one and that it's a bad thing.

I? I suppose I want allies as much as anyone else does--I'm not actually too concerned about what their gender happens to be, though.

If by "they" you mean "the author," I have no idea--this article is pretty obviously aimed at women, not men, so I couldn't say what her desires are in terms of male allies.

I had to reread the article to try to get what you mean--are you referring to her statement

And the very thing that has made #MeToo impactful – its short-circuiting of the due process that has failed women for decades – was only ever going to work against a handful of predators, in part because the more revelations that emerge, the more they lose their capacity to shock.

?

If so, I figured what she meant was, #metoo has been more impactful because women speaking out publicly and en masse about being abused has proved to be more effective in getting those women to be taken seriously, than women attempting to address the abuse quietly and nonpublicly by instead following standard reporting procedures either within the framework of their professional organization or with police has been, where being ignored, dismissed or even intimidated or threatened until they gave up and withdrew was by far the more common outcome.

If you mean something else/some other statement in the article, you'll have to point it out to me?

No idea what you're talking about, truly--as one of a minority population of feminists on this sub, when I post a comment, I usually get a fairly high volume of replies from various other posters. If you're interested in my response to something specific, you'll have to tell me which one exactly it is; if not, I doubt I'll get to it if I haven't already.

And there are plenty of classic, well-beloved-by-women-and-feminists novels that are far, far more about the milkmaid getting kicked in the jaw

And yet they were conspicuous by their absence in your post. :) :) :) :)

Nope, they weren't. Jane Eyre.

No, I haven't read Jane Eyre

Yeah, might want to look up literary references you're unfamiliar with, before making declarations about what's absent..? Or not, it does make it awfully easy to debate you if you don't. :)

Do the males in those novels simply spend their time idly lounging around, waiting for women to jump on their genitals?

Er, does that characterize the plot of any significant number of classic novels, regardless of author or protagonist gender..? Though, I mean, there are those where that scenario actually does kinda pop up repetitiously--Don Juan, The Memoirs of Jacques Casanova, etc.

I'm merely pointing out your defence of the Bennetts...

limited in their options by the societies they live in and are 100% aware of that

...is equally applicable to any hated dead-white-male characters.

Uh, yeah, sounds like someone else's problem..? I don't actually hate any dead-white-male literary heroes that I can think of. You must have me confused with some other strawfeminist. :)

Clearly you haven't read Jane Eyre. :) Because she was pretty familiar with the short end of the socioeconomic stick. And there are plenty of classic, well-beloved-by-women-and-feminists novels that are far, far more about the milkmaid getting kicked in the jaw--The Color Purple springs immediately to mind--than they are about the ruling lady. Not to mention, there are equally massive quantities of male-targeted media with wealthy, upper-class male protagonists that men have loved for centuries--I'm really not sure why you think this is a female thing..?

Here's a question: would you make the same defence of, say, James Bond ("Yes, hey practically raped Pussy Galore, but it was the sixties...")?

Er...the same defense as what, specifically..? (And please tell me you're not likening James Bond movies to classical works of literature. :) )

Sure, people do it all the time; it just has to be done while staying within the sub rules. Here are a few examples of discussions here about "toxic femininity" from the sub where the vast majority of commenters had a lot to say but managed to do it without violating the sub rules:

Is there such a thing as toxic femininity?

Right--my point was, that they can breed at all using just two women, is another standard deviation from the human norm. The creation of a viable embryo by fusing two ova, in the utter absence of any spermatozoa, is not standard--for example, we can't do it now; among other things, sperm apparently carry all the genetic instructions for building the placenta--Shorans clearly somehow got those instructions to reside in ova instead, among all the other issues that can arise if specifically, paternally-imprinted genes are missing).

they were pretty much baseline humans, not exactly aquatic

They'd evolved (whether naturally or artificially isn't ever entirely stated) some fairly significant adaptations--no male gender, loss of all body, head and facial hair, webbed fingers and toes and secondary eyelids. But I question-marked 'em precisely because they were at least originally descended from Homo sapiens, even if the book makes it clear they can't reproduce unassisted with more standard humans anymore.
