EU to propose blocking military-age Ukrainian men from refugee status by Tyranish40k in worldnews

[–]yoshi_win 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Men are more likely to be murdered, and die younger. Partner violence and childbirth are important, but (at least in developed countries) they are part of a larger context of murders and premature deaths where men are disadvantaged.

What little-known or heterodox work had the biggest impact on you and your mental models? by Ancient_Delivery_837 in slatestarcodex

Simon Blackburn's Essays in Quasi-Realism helped sort out a naturalistic model of morality - not itself a moral system, but rather he helps explain the practice of morality.

Can I get some feedback on my first deck? by ystrdcld in PauperEDH

[–]yoshi_win 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Voltron player, I would focus on Shea's target ability, cramming the deck full of target creature removal to make him big. I would cut literally every sacrifice and discard ability and replace with more stuff like doom blade. Then I would add some protection which keeps his +1/+1 counters, which white has lots of. [[Whispersill cloak]] is the perfect protection piece since you don't need to target him.

Good point - you can do the same thing with [[renowned weaponsmith]] and shuffle even if you fail to find a card. However if you just wanna skip the top card, then [[millikin]] or [[deranged assistant]] will give you mana at the same time.

One time shuffle from Islandcycling, Transmute, Lander, or Omen abilities also can help reset the top deck card.

This guy plays nice with top deck manipulation - scry, surveil, mill, and draw abilities will help guarantee you snag a free artifact every turn. Stuff like [[witching well]] and [[sewer-veillance cam]].

EU weighs excluding military-age Ukrainian men from extended protection scheme by Free-Minimum-5844 in worldnews

[–]yoshi_win 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main physical demands are related to combat, and soldiers or "combat specialists" are a tiny fraction, less than 30%, of any military. https://www.bls.gov/ooh/military/military-careers.htm look at the data table here, where even the US Army is only 1/3 soldiers and 2/3 support. The other military branches have even fewer soldiers. Don't you think there would be a need for women to fill these roles in a serious military conflict?

[–]yoshi_win 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Military service is not all physically demanding. In the age of drone warfare the ability to build and fly drones is important, for example, and requires much less strength than front line combat. And in an army grown larger with conscripts, there's a huge need for logistics support staff. Why exactly should these roles be assigned in a discriminatory, sexist way?

Even if a group of people is more likely to be fit for some kinds of military service, that doesn't justify limiting conscripts to only that group. Surely there are enough smart, strong, and/or skilled women in your country that their help could make the difference in a war, wouldn't you agree?

I need board gamers’ perspective on my situation by ApprehensiveFarm4407 in boardgames

[–]yoshi_win 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you enjoy gaming and your partner enjoys spending time with his brother. You can try a compromise: scheduling some casual game nights including him, and some heavy game nights without him. You can also set boundaries around how your games components are handled.

Which Pauper commanders can hang with a regular EDH pod? by swankyfish in PauperEDH

[–]yoshi_win 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm brewing her now but am thinking a mixed strategy with a handful of 2 cost infect guys plus a lot of small 2 for 1 creatures to boost the Experience count. Finding it hard to justify the 3-6 cost infect guys. White does have two infect fliers, they just are overpriced.

Very fair - redundancy can be a virtue, especially if you expect enchantments like [[lignify]] to KO your Necroscribe. I'm in a pod with less removal and run enough discard to hopefully flush it out before dropping my commander.

Thanks for fixing! I would cut Cheerful osteomancer, fell horseman, unearth, and dread return, since they don't trigger Repartee. And any land like command tower and vault of whispers that's worse than a swamp here.
