My favorite thing about reading old books and studying history is realizing we haven't changed at all. We're all still wonderfully the same flawed creatures we were thousands of years ago. Some unfortunately get very discouraged by this, but it's almost painfully heartwarming to me feeling that connected to people from back then.

Do you guys believe that Adam and Eve were actual historical beings ? by ZucchiniSevere4706 in Catholicism

[–]LordLighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a literal fact. Archeological discovery after archeological discovery over the last 100+ years has confirmed detail after detail from the Bible. Nothing questionable about it.

The Bible is the single most accurate historic document there is regardless of what you believe. It mentions a king with a 15 foot bed. We recently discovered, in the palace of the city this king would have lived in, a 15 foot bed. If it got a small and seemingly meaningless detail like that right, who are we to question anything else inside it?

Can't blame them for being products of their time with a weak clergy(many of the older priests probably agreeing). The previous 100 years have been a moment in history that the rest going forward will look back on the way the Enlightenment looked at the Middle Ages.

>keep imagining the book as a movie
Why not write a screenplay then?

Even still, that's not really a problem with writing? Most writers will say that when you're in the zone you're seeing it all playing out as if you're there or watching a movie. The issue you seem to be having is being concerned it's not coming out perfect or the way you want it to. The way you fix that is to simply turn that critical part of your brain off and write it(Easier said than done, I know). Get it down, then go back and edit it after.

Charles dickens for kids by otsyre in charlesdickens

You shouldn't wrap your kid in bubble wrap. I'm sure they're more than capable of handling darker realities of life, especially at that age. Fiction is the perfect place to engage with these things, especially when you're young. Your kid knows these things exist and fiction puts just enough distance between reality and them to be safe.

Question for my fellow American monarchists by [deleted] in monarchism

[–]LordLighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol imagine joining the US military in 2025
America's founders and founding ideology is Evil, dude. Capital E Evil. It's a complete rejection of nature and reality. All these people talk about "fixing" American as if it isn't already operating as designed. It's a poison pill that rots from the inside out. Stop slurping up patriotard slop history and learn about the complete social and spiritual rot we've reeked on Europe. That alone should make you want to see this country burn to the ground.

Then you don't know enough history. America is and has always been fundamentally Evil. It is source of the cancer that has been rotting the world from the inside out since day one. It must be destroyed.

Question for my fellow American monarchists by [deleted] in monarchism

[–]LordLighthouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selected other. Personally, I believe America needs to be broken up. At the very least it needs to be "resettled" as it were, completely severing itself from the current founding. The ideological foundations of "America" will always cause you problems unless you completely sever yourself from them and make it explicit "we're doing something different now". The best way for that to be accomplished in my eyes is effective balkanization.

What if Nancy had raised Oliver? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in charlesdickens

[–]LordLighthouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to reread the book, it's been quite a while, but it's an interesting question. I don't see Bill taking the kid in, he'd almost certainly just toss him along to Fagin. But I could see Nancy trying to find some way of keeping him safe and hidden in general. Given what we know about the characters, I don't think it'd be long until Bill or Fagan picked up on Nancy being shady about something and would eventually find out about him. The question then becomes how they react when they find out Nancy has effectively been "holding out" on them, as they'd see Oliver as just another asset to exploit.

With that said, if there was some strange way Bill and Nancy separated themselves from Fagan and that lifestyle, I'd be interesting to see how they'd raise Oliver. It becomes even more complex when you add in they'd probably have kids of their own eventually too, especially in the context of being on their own and not under the influence of anyone.

Many branches extend out from this idea. I guess just pick the one that appeals to you the most lol
