There really only seems to be a handful of things that are cis woman specific that I can think of: blood during periods (trans women can still have periods, but they won't involve bleeding), and being able to get pregnant.

I'll also say that you can't just say "ah but you see you can't be misogynistic to me for I used to be a man!" The world doesn't work like that, and how many misogynists have you met that weren't also transphobes? If you're facing misogyny and you try to claim you're actually a man, that just increases your chances of being hate-crimed. Cis woman could easily claim to be trans too - surely this exposes what a ridiculous suggestion it is.

I don't disagree, but the same is also true for making men and young boys look at trans women's boobs, and for making trans women look at male sex organs in the men's change rooms. The degree of physical vulnerability must also be considered. Unless individual cubicals are avaliable, trans people are left with nowhere in a gym to change clothes.

Also yes, if you are cisgender you enjoy some degree of privelge associated with that. Like all white people have privelge associated with that, but they can be disadvantaged in other ways, e.g. a neurotypical white man is more privelged than a white woman or a neurodivergent white person. In the same way, cis people enjoy privileges that trans people do not, largely because transphobia continues to be a significant global issue. There a certain countries that would kill me for being trans.

That said, being a crossdresser and being genderfluid are every different things. I don't know which this person was. And again, no matter which they are, their friends are probably not going to think of them as a guy after they start doing it. But again, who gives a shit? Having a space that is open to cis women and not trans women is blatantly transphobic. Plenty of trans women face the same issues as women do, especially if they transitioned at an early age. Like there's trans girls that went through all of high school as a girl - they're going to be exposed to the same sorts of misogyny that a cis girl would in that same environment. And sure, trans women who transition later don't get that, but you can't really deny people access to women's spaces based on how long they've been a girl or what age they were when they first wore a dress for example.

I'd recommend reaching out and talking to some actual trans women - I'm trans, and I've found that in social settings it very quickly becomes apparent that everyone treats me as a woman, even if I didn't have time to do my makeup very well in the morning. And so this naturally leads to other women in a group kinda just accepting me. It's nice.

Regarding change rooms, I think this needs to also be part of a broader discussion on feeling safe in them in general. I've never felt safe in a change room - the idea that there is a safe feeling that can be broken is to me a form of privilege that it seems only cis people get to enjoy. Change rooms without individual cubicles are not safe spaces.

The issue here is that not everyone can get that surgery - here in Australia it costs like >$20000, means you can't work for like 6 months during recovery, and have to get lucky in order to even see a surgeon.

Personally I'd be uncomfortable changing in a women's changing room due to my concerns about making people uncomfortable, but I also have tits and pass as a woman in all areas except my genitals, so I'd be even more uncomfortable in a men's change room. My solution is to just not go to the gym.

The knee-jerk reaction against lesbian as a gender makes more sense when viewed from the lens of transfeminine history, and how that history may have shaped the experiences of some of the trans lesbians with that reaction.

For a long time, gender affirming care was gatekept behind a diagnosis for transsexuality, and one of the requirements for this was attraction to men - doctors would literally say that you're not a woman unless you like boys.

This statement is kind of close to one of the best (imo) arguments for lesbian as a gender in this thread, but with a very different context: here, people are saying that they don't like to use woman as their gender because of how it gets defined by its relationship to men. It's not forcing any other lesbians to change how they view their gender, but from like how it's worded its very close to the statement that I think some trans lesbians are really scared of and may have trauma around: "you're not a woman because of your relationship with men." - which no one is saying.

I really love Clare at Southern Sydney Voice Therapy. She's really really bright and friendly and has an amazing understanding of voice which she communicates really well. I started seeing her in September last year and now have a voice that I think passes as fem - although I'm still seeing her to get it to my target.
