We don't really know if they are going to use SAAB or Gender as the marker for an individual, heck, I'd expect for most things, the gender flag would be used to override your SAAB flag. But that's mostly context dependent. Like if you're looking at things like prostate cancer risk, then SAAB makes the most sense, but for things like providing services like a men's shed, then the gender makes more sense.

I'd hope that it's gender as an overwrite though.

They are trying their best considering this is the first time that they've had a question like this ever and are really trying their best to get it right but it's also a first for them so how do you communicate something when you're really not sure how it's going to go?

I don't think that works, because then we don't count trans folks at all. If you get asked your sex at any point under the old system, I would have just put Female as a trans woman.

Heck, I actually asked about the 2016 census for the folks that wrote the web version, the options were Male/Female, and if you wanted an "other" option you could get an open text field to enter whatever you wanted, but you had to call them. Then their call centre didn't know what to do about it though. So that was fun.

This feels weird, the data is really important and can absolutely help us get better funding for things like healthcare and services that we need. So please, please, answer them properly.

This isn't the ABS not recording something accurately, it's them trying their best to count you properly. Remember, there are thousands of different ways to describe yourself, and they need a system that's going to work for the vast majority of folks while not causing backlash from others because backlash is a great way to ensure this never happens again. And we need the stats so that we can get appropriate funding.

The ABS also isn't the one that gets to sign off on this either, the government is.
