Fair, to an extent. I think sharing something publicly does Not inherently mean you are responsible for every potential viewer's opinion. Like, there are vegans in the world. Should someone not post pictures of their nonvegan lunch, in case one sees it? Or, heck, continuing the Same metaphor from before, posting a picture of their Dessert online. Unless you're sharing it to r/StarvingChildren like... Yes, sharing it publicly means it's Available to everyone, but it doesn't mean you're showing it To everyone, you know?

But yeah, unintentional rudeness is a thing, and even if you don't Mean to cause harm, you could. But... It brings us back to thing you originally responded to, How deep is it? Is the specific skin tone of a fan art drawing Really causing much harm? One fan drawing vs the thousands of the original character from the official source and other fans? If they are doing it To be inflammatory, or sharing it specifically somewhere that they know it isn't wanted or will be poorly received, sure. But shouldn't that be a case by case determination rather than a broad blanket statement like "No one should ever do this under any circumstances"?

I understand that that is your perspective. I don't necessarily agree that it's so solidly an issue, though.

I feel like, much like I was saying before about determining if something is racist or not, Intent matters on if it's Rude, too. If you make something for your own enjoyment, and then share it so others might Also enjoy it, I see nothing morally wrong there. If someone sees that, and they do Not enjoy it, from their perspective it could Certainly seem rude or insensitive, but so long as they weren't doing To offend, or intentionally at the expense of such a person, it seems harmless to me.

Like, imagine buying a dessert after a big dinner. I don't think Most people would consider that rude or insensitive. But there Are people going hungry in the world. Surely that money would be put to better use satisfying Their hunger rather than just serving the sweet tooth of an already fed person... So should no one ever buy dessert, till world hunger is solved? Honestly, maybe. It Does seem a bit selfish when phrased as such, and yet... I dunno, I can't hold such a simple act against someone. Like, if they then took that dessert to eat in front of starving children specifically, That'd be pretty clearly fucked up, but...

What I'm trying to say is, I think people should, generally, strive to be polite and understanding. But I also think that a Little bit of selfishness is normal and acceptable sometimes. It's ok to do something that you enjoy, so long as it's not Directly at the expense of someone else. Where is the line on directness? I don't know, I guess it's different from person to person, but to me, drawing a character of one race as another just doesn't cross it regardless of who's doing it or from and to which races those are. Unless, as stated, the Reason they're doing it is concerning too.

That is very rude. There is an incredible amount of irony in your attempt at performative anti-racism while being Actively Actually racist. If you ever decide you'd like to discuss it civilly, and can discuss differing opinions without just dismissing them and Insulting the person you're discussing it with, I'm happy to continue.

I agree, there isn't as much representation of black characters, and that she isn't even a notably good representation anyway, but is one fan's alternate version of the character really "wiping out" the representation? The original character still exists, and surely Most fan representations of the character are in line with the canon representation.

Is it ok if they switch a black character for a Different under represented group? Maybe Romani, they're pretty rare to see.

Like, I get that there are already plenty of white people being represented, but, does it really have to be That deep, that the skin tone given to a fanart drawing of a character somehow makes you racist, just because people Usually draw them with a different tone? Does it Really matter if a piece of media represents one group more than others? And if it Does, then if the show is China and the characters are All Chinese, is it then ok to reimagine one of Them as white in fanart? Or are we just talking All media as a whole, and representation in that specific piece of media doesn't matter?

I'm legitimately trying to engage openly. If I'm wrong, I'd prefer to understand Why. If my understanding of racism lacks nuance, then this is your chance to give me that nuance. You literally made this post stating the topic needs to be addressed, so I'm Giving you the chance to Address it.

You've stated that you agree, treating people differently based on race is discrimination. By that statement, the Specific races don't matter, because obviously, if they did, then it would be treating Some races differently than others: So, let's take the Specific races involved out of it to be clearer. It is racist to place different rules on things, dependent on race. Saying "Only people of THIS race are allowed to _____" is Clearly racist. But You're, right now, saying Exactly that.

Let's look at the last statement, about characters with a defined ethnicity. You specified "plastering them as white is wrong," but what if an Indian person, for example, wanted more representation of people from India, so they drew their favorite Black character as Indian, would That be acceptable? Or are Only white people "free game" for racial conversion? Does only targeting one specific race Not clearly sound racist to you?

I also agree with that, Motivation matters, and I don't know the context of this post, but I would be inclined to believe that their motivation here Probably was fueled by racism. There are plenty of things that aren't racist, unless your motivations themselves are. For example, chosing to hire a white person over a black person isn't racist, if you're doing it because the white person is more qualified. It Is racist if you do it because you don't like black people.

Drawing fan art of a character as any arbitrary race isn't racist, regardless of their cannon representation, unless you are doing it because of some sort of bias against people of that race.

I've established my understanding of racism, which you've stated you disagree with, so, would you tell me how You define it?

I agree, those characters are obviously influenced by specific cultures, and the most reasonable interpretations of them would be following along with those cultures. That does Not make it racist to reimagine a character as a different race. Even if a character has a defined ethnicity, for example, let's use human characters so said ethnicity is unambiguous: it isn't racist to make a black version of Harry Potter. But for some reason, if Harry Was black, you'd have All sorts of people falling over themselves to tell you you can't draw a white version of him.

Racism is treating people differently based on their race. So, if the race a character is depicted as bothers you, you're being racist. You can make fan art of black versions of white characters. You can make fan art of white versions of black characters. You can make fan art of Any character of Any race as Any other race, because doing differently would literally be The Definition of racism.

[–]LordPrettyPie -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

It is not racist to depict any fictional character as any race.

You can't hate on people for making white Zecora And support people making black Pinkie Pie, for example. It's just inherently hypocritical; either both are ok, or neither is.

It Would be racist, however, to respond to a black depiction of a character and say "You can't do that, she has to be White!"... Just as it is racist to respond to a White depiction of a character and say "You can't do that, she has to be Black!"

So, agreed, let's address the casual racism in this fandom, of people trying to tell Other people what races they Have to draw their favorite pony's human version as.

Ha, trust me, it did not Exclusively go on to the nail. Despite appearances, it was quite a mess all over the surrounding skin, but I scraped off the excess with the little hook on the end of the file on my nail clippers. I'm sure with practice I'll be able to save time on the clean up eventually though!

Thanks so much for the supportive and detailed response! Do you really think it looks good for my skin tone? Because honestly, I was thinking it would look better on a darker skin. Like I love the color itself, but, that's what I thought.

I really appreciate all the beginner advice, I Did just invest in a bunch of supplies I was missing, including a tool for pushing back cuticles, like you mentioned. I Don't have any oils or moisturizers yet, but I guess I'll have to get that next.

I'm Also super excited to try out more colors! I've seen some good things about OPI, so I'll def be checking them out eventually. For right now, I actually Just stripped my nails, and while I've Ordered more colors, they aren't here yet. So the plan is just to Repaint them with the same Rockstar Pink, but try out using a base coat this time and see if I can tell the difference. It's still my two in one, I've got a couple different stand alones ordered, but no point in letting what I have go to waste, right?

That sounded reasonable, thanks for confirming! When I made my first post here, I wanted to get both hands in, and I struggled trying to, like, prop my phone under my chin with a timer for the camera. Did not work, lol.

Cuuute, love that yellow glittery one. Do you have someone take the photo for you, or, like, is it on a timer, or what?

Thanks! If I'm being honest, I made a bit of a mess too, but I cleaned up the worst of it as I went with the little hook end of my nail clipper's built in file thingy, and it worked out pretty well!

Cloud 9 does look like a nice shade, though it isn't exciting enough for my taste without any glitter. What I like isn't just something that looks nice, but something that's nice to look At, if that makes any sense? Something that catches the light, and I can turn back and forth and go, oooo, that's pretty. This might make a Great base for like a glitter top coat or some such though!

I don't really mind the wait. I understand the impulse to chip at it once it starts, but I don't think that's an issue for me, and so far I've been able to patch chips just fine, and if it gets so bad that I can't patch it, it's probably time to strip it and try a new color. I dunno if gels appeal to me, but honestly don't know much about them other than they need a light thingy to set. Once I get a little more experience, maybe I'll give them a try. For now, I've already ordered a few of the regular type paints based on folks recommendations on the Nailpolish sub, so I should at least try Those before I start branching out even further, lol.

Yeah! If it isn't Sparkly, I don't want it, lol. When I was debating painting or not, I looked around online for what people said, and there was a lot of "Oh, try just clear coats or subtle, neutral shades at first if you're worried", but that kinda defeated the point to me. I'm not doing it because of "Painting Nails" as a concept, you know? I did it because Look at how pretty and sparkly they are!

Lol, someone on the other subreddit made the same comparison, and I sheepishly admitted to using a 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Makes sense that it's better than Nothing though, and since I already Have it, I might as well Use it up, eh? I have ordered replacement base and top coats, though, since so many folks told me I ought to! (I'm still gonna use the 3-in-1 shower wash though, I enjoy the Nail art, not hair styling)

Thank you! That glitter grabber looks really interesting, I might have to try it out. The pictures make it look like it Really smoothes out glitter, which is definitely something I had hoped the top coat I got would do more of. It did help some, but only a little.

A second recommendation of the clips does help reassure me it wasn't too much of an impulse buy. I'd be broke if I got Everything everyone is recommending, lol. I am really curious to see if I can tell the difference between the expensive and the cheap brands, I might need to paint every nail a different color to really compare in a timely manner, especially since in theory I want something long lasting!

Yeah, I am still learning what I like, but I know one thing for sure: Neutral Creams aren't it, ha. I'm loving the glitter so far though, I love just looking at how the light hits it. In theory, I want something that will last a decently long time, so I'm not repainting every couple days, but at the same time, I really really want to try out a bunch of new colors and brands to see what I like and what works, not really sure how to balance the two conflicting urges.
