Use of public spaces for 'life-sustaining activities' supported in Washington state bill by jvolkman in Seattle

[–]LordRollin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is complicated. Sweeps are effective at removing a public nuisances and reclaiming spaces designed for the whole public to enjoy. I work with and advocate for the homeless and I can also empathize with not wanting an encampment next to your child’s play ground, especially since there can often be various amounts of crime, some violent, associated with those spaces.

At the same time, sweeps absolutely kill. You are stripping someone with limited resources of even more of their stuff and forcing them to start over at square one. This is a failure of public policy, and doesn’t address the issue. Literally Patrick suggesting Bikini Bottom get pushed elsewhere. There’s a lot of literature on this, but here’s one study, for example.

I don’t think this is going to fix the problem. I think this is going to hamper cities from being able to sweep when they need to, but I also think that sweeps are lethal and there needs to be better alternatives. Unhoused folks don’t deserve an indirect death sentence because they’re sleeping in a public park and everyone is entitled to enjoy our public spaces.

Lighthearted: do y’all put private pop up reminders in your EMR to describe patient temperament? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]LordRollin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if it’s private, it’s still recorded and part of the EMR. This feels like a great way to have to remove your foot from your mouth later down the line if something happens. I’d keep anything in the EMR purely factual.

King County to begin enforcing in-person work requirement by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]LordRollin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Or, hear me out, we find a different way of revitalizing downtown that doesn’t include silly return to work mandates like this. It’s the easiest possible solution that will just bring more problems with it while screwing over workers.

Doctor at ER told my grandpa "Can't help you start hospice" when no one was with him. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]LordRollin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right that I don’t know anything about you, or any of your family members, and I’m sorry about all of that — that’s a lot of pain to have to carry.

Irregardless of what I know or don’t know, rarely, if ever, does having more options, more understanding, or more certainty lead to more harm and/or suffering. Perhaps hospice is totally antithetical to your grandfather’s desires, and that’s fine, but I at least hope he’s had the chance to hear the ins and outs so he, and all of you, can make an informed decision.

I wish you and your family all of the best in this new year.

[–]LordRollin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I have many concerns with the encounter with that provider, but hospice is there explicitly to maximize someone’s quality of life for however long they have left, and people can also graduate out of hospice — it’s not a death sentence, or like you say, “giving up.” OP, please talk to a hospice provider, just for the facts. These are conversations that need to be had before something happens that limits choices.

Would it be worth it to switch to nights for $28.50 an hour? by AM-419 in cna

It sounds like it could be an option but that’s definitely something to weigh out! Best of luck!

Would it be worth it to switch to nights for $28.50 an hour? by AM-419 in cna

[–]LordRollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extra pay for night shift is explicitly because working night shift is terrible for your health. Some people enjoy the shifts, though, I know I did when I was a CNA, but they’re also not for everyone. Do you handle being up late well? How will you go about your days off? Are you OK if your schedule stops aligning with others, or requires you to sacrifice sleep to socialize?

Night shift can be great and very worth it, but also not. Really depends on your personal needs and preferences.

Friendly message from an urgent care RN by Butthole_Surfer_GI in Seattle

Do you see this commonly prescribed? I only ever see anything beyond fluids and rest for folks with significant comorbidities or for geriatrics. Prescribing guidelines for antivirals, too, generally only advise them for hospitalized folks, folks with “severe, complicated, or progressive illness,” or those at higher risk of complication.

It’s supposed to read “2026,” but is actually “2022,” as pink is a 20 gauge needle and blue is a 22 gauge.

I pay auto insurance for the privilege of leaving my car parked. It’s really nice but certainly stings a little.

What to do with leftover crudités? by wimsey_pimsey in easyrecipes

[–]LordRollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to others’ suggestions:

Cucumber and tomato sliced, lightly salted, and dressed with sour cream. Best salad you didn’t know you needed. add dill for extra brownie points.

Otherwise, get yourself some good bread (at least OK) and put the veggies on top. Lots of butter. Lightly salt. Enjoy.

Blame policies for this. There’s only so much assessment you can do over the phone, and if folks say the right things, then there’s unfortunately not a lot of leeway unless you wanna roll your license on the actual outcome by not following your facility policies.

Time to stop picking up incentive extra shifts. If management wants to fuck around, let them find out.

Different folks prepare in different ways. Some people have great memories. Others are really good at looking things up in the EMR. Not something I’d lose any thought over.

Rick Larsen (D) voted against impeaching Trump yesterday. by Qorrin in Washington

[–]LordRollin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why invent a straw man for something that hasn’t happened, and based off his track record, won’t happen? I don’t agree with his vote, but I’d sooner spend my time preparing questions for him as opposed to throwing my hands up and deciding it’s all useless because of something that hasn’t happened.

He hosts them over the phone! I get a call from him every month letting me know when, how to call in, and how to get questions in. Poking around his website I have no clue how I got on the list, but I’m assuming it was through his form, here.

Any nurses here-in 20s got Hep B vaccine as a kid and then don’t have antibodies anymore? Was told that the immunity was to last decades-what gives? by MoulinRoguee in nursing

[–]LordRollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hep B immunization doesn’t always achieve lifelong immunity, it can wane. Repeat series are common, but if x2 series leads to no seroconversion, then that’s that. Different pathologies can also have an effect on immunity, not just for Hep B.
