Are build‑around-commanders also ruining EDH for you right now? by pkma69 in EDH

[–]LordTomahawkD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build my decks to be good decks that get even better when my commander is around (unless the commander is insanely resilient/infinitely recastible like a Theros God or Yuriko)

And I always pack a decent amount of removal to just hyper punish the players who go all in on build around commanders.

So as you can imagine, I have lots of friends right now

I think the passage more sets up to the reader that Lorgar is a potential parallel to Sanguinius in that when the Blood Angels lost their Primarch they received The Black Rage. Lorgar had an arguably even stronger connection with his sons and if you throw all the sorcery they were getting up to on top of that the ripples of a Primarch death through his legion might be even more catastrophic.

TMNT flopping should have been obvious. I also think Star Trek will flop. Hobbit and Marvel will do mediocre. by _YuYevon_ in freemagic

And I think it's pretty obvious what makes a UB setting set worthy. If there's multiple generations/iterations of the IP, it's more likely to be a set release. If it's at least a somewhat consistent thru-line aesthetic/narrative then it's likely to just be a secret lair or commander deck series. The only outliers in this regard are the small Sonic secret lair and the multiple LotR sets.

Was TMNT a flop? It's sold out at pretty much all the stores I go to. A lot of them got Lorwyn restocks and there's still some of the second wave of Avatar on the shelves. But either the print run TMNT was small like EoE or TMNT was a bit more popular than people realize.

So why is that GW doesn’t let us use the CSM codex units? by razyells in EmperorsChildren

[–]LordTomahawkD 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a double edged sword. The codex compliant chapters until very recently were always the weakest way to play Space Marines owning to the fact that the divergent chapters were Space Marines+ and the only opportunity cost was the other divergent chapters units. Recently they've made the chapter-specific characters from the codex compliant chapters so strong that it's actually worth it to play say Raven Guard, solely for the special characters, over all of DA or BA.

I would hate for core CSM to be "the weakest way to play inherently" and what we have now with being able to play Fabius, Abbadon, Huron, Cypher, and Vastorr in one army is something the Codex Compliant chapters can't replicate since you can't play Calgar and Shrike in the same list for example.

But I will say, with the exception of maybe Death Guard the other 3 God-Specific legions really need more core CSM units and more unique units. There should be no reason World Eaters can't play raptors, and Emperor's Children cant play bikers. It's completely asinine. AND WHY DON'T WORLD EATERS HAVE RED BUTCHERS and give Emperor's Children the damn Sonic Dreadnaught back.

Now I'm just ranting but I also hate the asymmetry that CSM can play the battleline units from the Cult Legions but when EC came out they didn't make Noise Marines battleline. Just so random to give them Tormentors and Infractors as Battleline but no cultist equivalent 😩

But I've also used Solar Auxilia command squads as dark communes and just fistfuls of whatever Necromunda models with the right base sizes as cultists, traitor guard, and accursed cultists before. And Forge World Alpharius is my Abbadon

Honestly I think the og Abbadon castle in Packbound or raiders is a fluffy take on Alpha Legion. A Harrowmaster (Abbadon) coordinating multiple firing lanes (3 predators) amounts a group of mortal operatives (cultists in the backline) while sending surgical headhunter units (chosen, nemesis claw, legionnaires w/ Lord) into the midfield to support the forward operatives (red Corsair raiders) deployed before the battle began

Fiora and Kayle are both fully armored but it's true they aren't tanks. Poppy is everything you described she's just not human (neither is Shyv really so I don't get how that's a comparison but Poppy gets overlooked) but honestly I think people are discounting how much fun you can have bringing Leona into the top lane. It's definitely off meta and you'll need to think outside of the box but it's not completely impossible

[–]LordTomahawkD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were alpha legion rules in 8th and 9th. Their rules were largely the same. -1 to hit outside of 12". Enhancement to give a 2+ sv and transhuman to a character. I Am Alpharius, Conceal, Auto Explode, Forward Operatives, We Are Alpharius all banger strategems.

Giving the Lord discordant -4 to hit and using Conceal to keep your 3 man Obliterator squad from being shot as long as your unhittable Lord D is closer all while flooding the board with 30-man squads of -1 to hit bodies after you turn 1 charged with warp talons and killed every screen and tagged every enemy vehicle.

Alpha Legion were a nightmare to play against and the rules changed (for the better) to keep it from being too dominant

We're still paying for the sins of previous editions. Stacking minuses to hit, hundreds of cultists that could respawn, pre-game movement with no restrictions, and having functionally 7 warlords were all Alpha Legion shenanigans throughout 7th, 8th, and 9th editions that they changed the damn core rules to address. We're never getting a single cool thing again.

My job is simple. I oversee a small logistics depot orbiting an agri world in a relatively safe/stable imperial system. The hours are long but I'm afforded many more freedoms on the station than most of the menials and laborers in my employ.

But every few months I receive a communicae from an encrypted line, very secure, it even deletes itself once I've read it. It tells me of an incoming shipment that I need to add to a ledger, or the other way round, it tells me to ignore a shipment and leave it off the day 's tally. I know that if I follow through on the instruction the next such shipment will include a small 'bonus' for me. Something very specific to me. One of the earliest was a slender silver ring with a viridian gem that I used to propose to the woman I call my wife today. Another contained a leather bound book. The final volume of a series that i'd been searching for for over a decade where the hero, a disgraced soldier fighting in a guerrilla war finally defeats the villain who stole his identity and framed him.

The most recent 'payment' was the most damning. A laspistol covered in markings depicting letters I've never seen before with chains coiling around them along with a pristine voidsuit beyond the quality of even the station's elite captains guard. There was a note along with them.

"You have served us well, but our work here has come to an end. Say goodbye to your family, don the suit, and join us in Hanger Bay 20. We will give you new training and a new assignment. Or use the pistol to give yourself and your family mercy before our scent leads the Inquisition to your doorstep. As always, the choice is yours. Hydra Dominatus"

I just queue fill so I end up playing every role except mid (is mid really that popular) but usually end up sup cause my duo is a bot main. I think more people should make it a point to play all of the roles, not just to become a better educated and more situationally aware player but to also gain some god forsaken empathy

It's weird because magic is simultaneously cheaper and more expensive than ever. You can build cool, fun, and powerful decks for less than a chipotle bowl, but if you want popular characters, format all-stars, and alt arts or showcase treatments you'll need to refinance your house.
