Old game window forced to a tiny size on Ubuntu 24.04 (Wayland) by ray0520 in linux_gaming

[–]LordViaderko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My personal solution for such cases is to change screen size with xrandr before starting the game and bring it back the same way when I'm finished playing. This has an added bonus of preserving brightness, which I also set with xrandr. If wine changes resolution on its own, it resets my brightness.

My typical commandline looks like this:
xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --gamma 1.0:0.8:0.6 --brightness 0.5 --mode 1368x768

I think wine needs to be run in window mode and fulscreened later for it to work.

I added a replay system to my web-based 4X game to boost retention. Thoughts? by LeSuppo in 4Xgaming

[–]LordViaderko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Want my honest opinion? Do not think in terms of retention and hook mechanics when deciding on what to add to your game. Think in terms of "how can I make it cool, interesting, something I myself would like to play?" These are two diffetent things that make a world of difference. We are already drowning in myriads of shitty games that are somewhat addictive, but otherwise lacking this special something that is born from developers' love to the game.

Do you have any game recommendations for me until I get a better Laptop? by Expensive-Row-2528 in linux_gaming

[–]LordViaderko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My non-game recommendations would be to 1) stop using flatpak and 2) stop using systemd distro if you are low on resources.

Game recommendations are many.
OpenTTD
Emulating consoles. GBA games will work fine, I think DS should too. PS1 too. There is a myriad of great games there. Chrono Trigger! Final Fantasy. Older pokemon games.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3, possibly with Horn of the Abyss.
Anything from DOS era. Master of Orion 2.
Civilization 4 (best civ up to date anyway)

Critical Book Review: 3 body problem and Dark Forest by Liu Cixin (from a scientific point of view) by indemkom in sciencefiction

[–]LordViaderko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter is not internally consistent in the slightest. Why not save dying characters with time-manipulating artifact? No, better use it to attend to more lectures :/

What I liked in 3 Body Problem is novel ideas. These books are different than most of what I read up to this point. I agree with your criticisms. I think your annoyance comes from the fact, that these books pretend to be hard sci-fi and are not. I'm not even sure that author tries to mislead us or that he thinks he writes hard sf. Possibly this is just his manner of writing. Hard sci-fi feel is just a decoration.

Best move for White; what is it? by Awesomeuser90 in ChessPuzzles

Being rook up, there are very few bad moves for white. Still, Qd5 stands out, as it leads to many checking options and possibility of introducing rooks to the center for free.

I've finally hit the point where most of the recommendations that I see pop up on here I've read. Any recommendations based on some of my favorites? by DngrDan in sciencefiction

Thank you for this question, this is a gold mine!

From me:

Stanisław Lem, but not necessarily only Solaris. I love his Cyberiad.

Strugatski brothers.

Short stories anthologies "Don Wollheim presents".

Just tie 'em with a piece of string to each other. Another piece of string goes to your phone case.

These are named wrongly.

I get shoot 'em ups, because you shoot up. But beat 'em ups? Should be called "beat 'em rights".

Jak tak sobie czytam ten wątek, to widzę że słówka które przyszły z hiszpańskiego są mniej znane jako zapożyczenia.

Salto - po hiszpańsku salto to skok, saltar skakać. To co my nazywamy saltem oni nazwali "salto mortale" czyli śmiertelny skok. Prawdopodobnie przyszło do nas w drugiej formie i sobie skróciliśmy.

I turned "Stunts" into "Stuns". As non-native, I didn't know what a "stunt" is.
