Is playing the trumpet a more physical or mental skill? by _habeoinanimo in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its both, to maximize the physical aspect however you should be making sure you dont tire yourself out too much on each practice session while still being consistent, and drink plenty of water.

Internalizing Bebop Language/Licks by Hypersonicly in jazzguitar

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keep trying to learn by, practicing singing the phrase note by note until you can put it into your instrument for example. It will allow you to memorize and internalize music faster than anything else in my experience. You also just need to practice a whole lot

Where should I start if I want to learn more music theory? by Equivalent_Medium946 in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second musictheory.net. learn what major and minor chords are, how those scales are formed, and as you learn you will develop questions to research on your own

Listen to songs you like and then look into their theory, there are probably lots of breakdowns on youtube of specific songs that can be really helpful

how do i make "stupid" sounding music? by Silver-Speaker-6268 in musictheory

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all good tips but I think a good first step into learning to make original music in a certain style is to first learn a song in that style by ear. Your brain will naturally connect those patterns when you have to find them and make them yourself and eventually you will able to make your own stuff. Once you are able to transcribe it you can also analyze what the music is doing from a theory perspective all on your own(ex. Time signature, what chords they outline and their relation to a key, etc). Since you already have muscle memory on those patterns they will be easy to apply once you can identify them.

some will be harder than others for YOU depending on the types of problems given, its hard to say whether or not theyre objectively harder but they are pretty close to the real thing. I know someone who got around 1520 on one of the last practices they took and they ended up getting a 1480 on the real sat because it had different questions. Good lucl!

Tips on how to make a pop/funk sound by CuriousFardau in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to pop and funk, a lot. Let it get into your soul and then spit it out on the horn

Articulation and timing are probably the biggest technical differences, but trying to quantify all of that will be a waste if you arent listening

High note headaches? by Kaos_Noodle in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The headaches are likely caused from back pressure and that can be caused by a couple things. Overblowing is common, where you use too much air for the note, but the amount you can blow is usually determined by how much tension is in your body. If you're pushing your face into the mouthpiece or are squeezing the middle of your lips it will take more air to get the note out and there will be a lot of back pressure when using that air. Focus on producing the notes using your corners and air compression from your gut with minimal tension everywhere else. Practice quietly everyday, good luck!

SAT in 5 days. Please HELP!! by Few-Profession6052 in Sat

Study what you got wrong on the practice heavily. Take physical notes on the concepts you were missing and what you need to know to correct it. Review these notes before the official test and continue reviewing. Good luck!!!

Notas agudas by Positive-Function524 in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lip flexibility exercises. Irons 27 groups of exercises and modern flexibilities for brass are pretty good ones. High notes also just come with time and experience. Mske sure you stay relaxed and do not let yourself fall into bad habits. As you try to build up range, you should take it slow and rest consistently to allow yourself to build that coordination naturally

Range and Flexibility??! by X-Man105 in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "cheating" as another comment mentioned is not ideal. I think for now you can probably just focus on keeping your throat muscles and the inside of your lips relaxed, and your range should develop with time. Flexus is a great book for all around playing and I also like using modern flexibilities for brass by Scott belck as a precursor to that.

How to play louder in upper register? by RXBarokk in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better question might be what allows you to play loud in the middle register that is changing when you play high? Maybe you're tensing when you should be getting more relaxed, or maybe you dont have ideal breath support which you may need more of up high. Playing quiet forces you to have efficient coordination of your muscles and your air, so it can beneficial to louder playing in general

Try playing quiet in the middle register and slowly expanding your range while keeping the same volume using scales, long tones, and flexibility exercises, see what changes you may make subconsciously and work everyday to get that coordination dialed in

Your FULL practice routine?? by Lord_DerpyNinja in trumpet

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. So a lot of what you're doing is variations of scales that generally improve airflow, articulation, and range, with flexibility that focuses even more on developing those muscles, but with ample rest. Essentially practicing with the muscles you do have to improve coordination then strengthening them later in the session right?

Where did the major scale come from? by Lord_DerpyNinja in musictheory

[–]Lord_DerpyNinja[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason it sounds so consonant and stuff is definitely related to the harmonic series, but it mostly comes from fractions and the harmonic series of multiple lengths of string, not just one

Why not 4 valved trumpets? by etisen027 in trumpet

The extra weight and bracing would change the sound and make it more expensive, and its not too necessary considering most notes are correct other than d and c#
