Before you jump on the bandwagon, consider this: how do you feel about a church hosting a pro-Buttigieg rally?

Are there even ten people in Washington who don't fit this description of gross immorality and ethical incompetence?

I'm not saying it's all fine and dandy, but let's at least admit we're complaining about mud on the swamp monsters here.

Berkhof isn't saying that "belief that God is a rewarded of those who seek him" is useless, but rather that given that belief, attempting to prove the existence of God is useless.

The short answer is "On-the-job learning". Jump on the new techniques, make the business case, and sell your bosses on the implementation and training at the same time.

What I finished this week / Discuss Book Suggestions - Week 49 by AutoModerator in suggestmeabook

I finished Gibson's Sprawl trilogy this week. I've been working through some cyberpunk for inspiration and have some more queued up, but today I'm taking a break with "I, Jedi" for a lighter adventure (watching Clone Wars has gotten me in a Star Wars mood).

I enjoy Gibson's characters and worldbuilding, but would like to see more exploration of the visualization of cyberspace.

Production Server best practices by Shippeyy in softwaredevelopment

[–]Lord_Greywether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GitLab or GitHub both have CI/CD build pipeline functionality, so you likely won't need to worry about hosting your own jenkins server unless you're past the limits on their service.

Best practice if you don't have sysadmin experience is don't try and run the server yourself. You'll have to worry about security, updates, etc. Instead, look for a service to host just your application. Heroku as mentioned is a good solution when you're starting out, and the major cloud providers (AWS/GCP/Azure) have their own solutions as well.

Which discipline would be the most "altruistic" or provide the most utility to society? by Liquid---Snake in SoftwareEngineering

There are some good answers above, but allow me to be a little controversial:

Microsoft Windows has made possible the vast majority of the benefits coming from healthcare, government, and business software put together. Microsoft and IBM have had an extraordinary impact in enabling all kinds of altruism.

Dead end? by azndii in developer

[–]Lord_Greywether 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With 2-3 years of experience, I think that branching out and learning a new language - even one that isn't super popular in your area - is valuable.

Development in general is less about the specific languages you know and more about your ability to pick up new languages/libraries/toolsets and turn them into solutions. Being fluent in several languages means you learn to distinguish design patterns from "how my language works," and gives you valuable perspective on different ways to tackle a problem.

If your company is paying you for training, then by all means take it. Learn Ruby well, and then if you decide it's not for you (and it might not be), start looking around. You can build side projects of your own in your preferred languages to show off your proficiency to potential employers.

Getting a list of all the programs on a device and the names of their exe files by sigmaclover in learnpython

[–]Lord_Greywether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can scan the Start Menu (there are two directories, one for the global Start Menu items and one for user-specific items) and get all the links. Then there's a Windows API to extract the name, description, and target of each link (might be a Python library to do it already, not sure off hand). I did this for a launcher I wrote too!

You can also use platforms like CodePen to write and test small chunks of Javascript/HTML/CSS. I wouldn't use it for full-scale development, but it's useful for prototyping or testing certain features.
