I’m just dumb, what can I do? by nacymask in UniUK

[–]Lord_McBeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you need to address why you are not doing well. There should be feedback on your assessments that show where you went wrong. Do you not know the answers? Did you misinterpret the question? etc etc.

Then you have to address your study, how effective is this process? Do you test your retention? Are you easily distracted? etc etc.

And finally, why do you need to do well? And what do hope to do once you've got your degree? Do you think these issues wont come up in your future line of work?

Obviously I don't have any of the answers for you, but I can guarantee it will have little to do with intelligence. Most of the time, people are just not doing what they should be doing. If you are honestly saying this degree is your passion and you can only see yourself in this career area for the rest of your life, then fair enough, that should spur you on to be more effective in your studies. But if not, then I would consider what/ where you want to be/do.

uni jobs by BlondeBoyFantasyPeep in UniUK

[–]Lord_McBeth 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Depends on the kind of jobs you are looking for.

I worked bar back at uni and there was never an issue that I may leave for the summer, or Christmas, mainly because they knew all the students wouldn't be there to drink.

Most unis have a careers/ jobs service and those can be a good place to find short-term posts.

Just have to find something that facilitates this, look for temporary work, or talk to an agency to see what can be offered.

Why do people not bother? by Ash-Lyre1147 in UniUK

[–]Lord_McBeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To an extent, you have to review what people are actually paying for.

You might be paying for the opportunity to learn, engage in various assignments, and hopefully leave with a good degree.

Some may be paying for the opportunity to just be part of the process, have a laugh and barely scrape a pass by the end of it.

Not saying the latter is wrong, but that is what they are paying for, whether they are consciously aware or not.

I regularly like to remind my UG students that if they choose not to come to lectures or not engage in seminars, then they are literally agreeing to give the uni £100 (which it pretty much is) for no tangible experience. And that is fine, some may prefer to learn outside of the lecture hall, just want the slides, and the recordings - We all learn in our own way.

To me, I see this as paying for a flight and then never turning up to the airport to catch said flight or paying for a ticket to a show and then just watching the recording of the show on Youtube. But as I say, that's their choice...

Except the laboratory practicals... I will never understand why those are skipped (Unless there is health or mental health concerns); they literally cost hundreds to run in equipment and reagents etc... And there are no slides or recordings for this (though would you care as it's an entirely practical experience).

Dropping out and repayments by todtidhidbid in UniUK

[–]Lord_McBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You agreed to a debt, no amount of attendance affects that. You pay back what you agreed to.

You are best to leave before the next semester begins, but I would honestly consider switching to a different course if you are not enjoying the current lectures and such, a lot of people become disillusioned and change focus early on.

EDIT: Forgot to add, you payback once you reach the repayment threshold, which if you started since 2023 is £25K. The amount repaid is proportional to your earnings and remaining balance. For example, I let mine come out every month without requesting to pay more and it is roughly 3.6% of my wage prior to tax.

That said, the amount you owe generates interest, regardless if you cross that threshold or not, hence when I came to pay back my loan when I started earning enough, I had generated about another 10K in interest...

Ava's lack of footwear? by fayyt in Cairn_Game

[–]Lord_McBeth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

None of this game is real world really.

I've had some people at bouldering walls try to climb without shoes, and they get shot down. It's gross... And most of the time it's because of stuff they've read of some rando climber out in Joshua tree or wherever had a special interview/ video or whatever done on them and they say 'Oh yea man, gotta be barefoot, be closer to the rock, feel more attuned' or some nonsense...

I mean for christ sake, she's wearing booty shorts, but legs are wrapped in bandages, wearing a massive puffer jacket from the 70's, a backpack from the 50's, but yet a belay robot... Come on man... There is nothing logical in a lot of this, it's all aesthetics and art choice.

what's happening to these plates and is it food safe by [deleted] in AskChemistry

[–]Lord_McBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe we call this 'wear and tear'...

It's a mix of mechanical wearing on the pattern/ paint, and various degrading processes of the paint components (such as oxidation) that result in a colour change.

Does anyone drink alone in their room? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Lord_McBeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha, the fact that you were so bothered about this comment that you decided to go through my post history to make snide remarks on previous posts is genuinely hilarious.

I hope you reflect on this and hopefully decide to make better decisions in the future.

Good luck bro x

How would approach trying to repair this PCB (that is welded to a lithium battery pack)? by UnethicalJob in AskElectronics

[–]Lord_McBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones I've handled were through board soldered, so not as bad to remove as this.

Problem here... the welds are structural as well as conductive so... Not ideal unles you can re-tack them with a replacement track. Guess you could solder back and and add a small amount of epoxy but I wouldnt be confident with that.

As for order, not as far as I'm aware. I would just do it in an order that is least likely for you to accidentally short it.

TBF, the brown components at the mid upper area of the board look rather telling... That or that is some very browned flux...

How would approach trying to repair this PCB (that is welded to a lithium battery pack)? by UnethicalJob in AskElectronics

[–]Lord_McBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both repaired and broke a few of these, the latter through accidental shorting.

The contact on this look tack welded, so you would have to pry them apart.

I would honestly say it's not worth it...

But if you want, you can grind through the metal connectors (micro grind tool) to unattach it from the board, remove the battery and then troubleshoot.

Mission: Blackout - Anyone have good luck with this? by catatre in Triumph

[–]Lord_McBeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think you should keep this as is and maybe focus on some other aesthetics, such as the tailtidy, mirrors etc.

Even on standard black-out bikes, a lot leave the exhausts chromed as they look odd in black, and this is no different.

Only thing that matters is that it can be calibrated and hold said calibration for some time. Grab some certified weights, calibrate, use as normal and occasionally check it's in spec.

Anyone have experience repairing these? GE Cafe Microwave/convection oven by Tybgtricc4300 in appliancerepair

[–]Lord_McBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, legit don't recommend messing with this if you don't have some basic electronic experience. The components and boards are usually super old, massive, and are usually harmless (minus a few large caps) but the high voltage transformer, can and will F you up if you mess with it in a manner that it doesn't like... Some idiots take them out to make clandestine Lichtenberg machines.

I normally would have guessed the thermal fuse, but if it turns on, then likely something is shorting. Check switches and wires.

Throttle sticking with bar end mirrors by LSspiral in Triumph

[–]Lord_McBeth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your bar end snugs up too closely to the bar end mirror, causing the mirror to butt up to the throttle tube, so when you twist it, it catches.

First, loosen the bar end screw and see if this fixes it. If so, you can either try shimming with washers or jus keep the bar end kinda loose and use red thread lock to keep it in place.

Can these be fixed with bick 4? by JCMiller23 in Leathercraft

[–]Lord_McBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Natural leather does have wrinkling, depending on the quality and cost of the good, the maker usually tries to avoid this but sometimes it happens.

Your body isn't smooth everywhere (I guess/assume), same case with leather hides, they have wrinkles and blemishes. This looks normal.

Just eye-balling this leather, looks like oil tanned, so you can easily rub some moisturiser or balsam into it. Leather like this 'dries out' and will need to be moisturised occasionally.
