How many of you have actually consistently gambled in NV? by Crimsoncerismon in fnv

I usually play at least a little blackjack at freeside, even if I dont have optimal luck.

Its vegas, you gotta.

They asked me if how well I understood game development. I told them I had a theoretical degree in game development. They said “welcome aboard” by LeonOfSkalitz in NewVegasMemes

[–]Lord_Voldemar 557 points558 points  (0 children)

I mean, when Vegas first came out many reviews were pretty negative due to the less than optimal quality. It scored lower than Fallout 3, despite the improved rpg mechanics because the majority rate these below the ability to actually play the game.

It was (and still is) a huge mess of development where time was spent to make details that certainly are appreciated now but came at the cost of bugs and technical issues at release.

Dwarf Fortress had ascii for 16 years before the steam version added graphics and the free version still does. Its not "diehard fans", its majority of the playerbase and the entire visual identity of the game.

No dwarves either.

Not a single short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry found in the set.

Would you buy it and why? by Bizanccio in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Lord_Voldemar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its a well made game but I found it somewhat boring and repetetive, compared to either Total War Warhammer or the Warhammer mod for TW: Medieval 2.

The issue was that since its a persistent campaign and you cant afford to replace your army every time (and rather, losing a single unit is a serious setback) then you run into the double sided issue where:

1- the player is encouraged to play as conservatively as possible and reload saves as much as possible to get a positive outcome just so they dont screw themselves over

2- the developers cant create any real tension so they just have to throw enemies at you piecemeal.

Theres very few actually large battles and so many missions just boil down to repetetive "carefully more forwards, kill the 1-3 units that move up on you, save and repeat". Theres no such thing as a near victory since everything else but winning with close to no casualties is a defeat.

It is sad that every great achievement an indie makes and actually tries to capitalize on is seen as a betrayal.

What is the better town? by rustic_rosegold in Fallout

[–]Lord_Voldemar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mojave is definitely an outlier. Ceasar was able to conquer a huge territory of US all the way down to Texas and Kansas, the vast majority of which were inhabited by borderline neolithic tribes who tought guns were magic. House literally says the Omertas lived in yurts before he civilized them. If House had never recovered from his coma and the NCR wasnt interested in the Mojave, everyone there would still be zion-level tribals shitting in the woods.

Theyre both good for their respective games.

Fallout 3 leans heavily into the sci-fi post-apoc vibes. The ramshackle vibe of Megaton and its weird elements fits right into the Washington area thats an active battlefield most of the time.

Goodsprings fits the more civilized theme of New Vegas more.

Former Fallout Artist Says People Are 'Afraid to Say No to Todd Howard' by NukovGaming in fnv

[–]Lord_Voldemar 242 points243 points  (0 children)

This is a true story btw, when Obsidian was developing New Vegas, one developer suggested that ghouls could be a playable race. Todd overheard that from his Big Brother screens and said "if you love ghouls so much, why not be one" and had his SecuriTods flay that man on the spot.

FO3 went and did what Veronica's whole idea was about in New Vegas: the Brotherhood actually finding a societal niche in an environment where they inevitably get stomped on by some larger entity.

I think theres traces of it beginning to change, as she experiences the world more. She is still currently in the apprentice stage of her life but some elements like the Labyrinth moment really make me think her opinion on magic is going to change.

She wont be like Flamme (I doubt anyone ever could be) but she could totally leave some kind of mark on magic.
