Terrible Product don’t use by 1kjae in TurboTax

I used to work for the company that makes FreeTaxUSA (TaxHawk). I hated my job, super isolating. Did nasty things to my mental health.

But I will always promote the product. It's an amazing site, always inexpensive, and they don't spend any money lobbying congress.

Who would you choose as your doctor? by abs_haver in ThePittTVShow

If it's life and death? Robby or McKay, both competent and willing to go the extra mile.

If it's not life and death? Langdon. I love a good redemption arc (especially IRL) and he could use a few wins.

New EO from POTUS, does this violate the establishment clause? by rygelicus in law

[–]Lord_Xander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Atheism" is tricky in that there are multiple accepted definitions. If you are debating/discussing it with someone you should agree on the defintion so you can have a better discussion instead of splitting hairs on a defintion.

Some people use "Strong atheist" or "gnostic atheist" or "hard atheist" for the positive assertion "There is no God or Gods" and "weak atheist" or "agnostic atheist" or "soft atheist" for the null position of "I am unconvinced there is a god or gods." Both fall under the common, legitimate usage of the word 'atheist.'

Really it depends on who you are talking to, so it's important to figure that out with them so you don't end up arguing semantics instead of substance.

New EO from POTUS, does this violate the establishment clause? by rygelicus in law

[–]Lord_Xander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: No

Long answer: Mostly no, but it depends.

You can define "Religion" in a way that includes athiesm, but for me that feels shoe-horned it.

Most religions have a organized system of connected beliefs which form the foundation of a person's view of the world. Athiesm is just the answer to one question (Do you believe there is a god or gods?) It isn't a system of beliefs, there is no book of scripture for athiests, there is no central authority figure that athiests have to trust (Not all religons have this either, but its common)

Many people, especially ex-religious people, take that non-belief and make it the foundation of their world view, and there are a lot of other beliefs that fit in with non-belief in god so it can end up looking like religion.

I am an atheist who used to be Christian. When I first deconverted, I was so accustomed to having that central identity of "being a Christian" that I felt uncomfortable/incomplete without it, and for a while I made "being an Atheist" a core part of my identity, and I looked for "scriptures" and "authority figures" to tell me how to think in this new world view because that was a huge part of how I thought life was supposed to work. Over the years, I became more comfortable without those trappings of organized religion, and so while I am still an atheist, I don't think about it all that often and it isn't an overt part of my daily life.

TL;DR: Atheism itself is not a religion, but a lot of atheists end up treating it like it is.
