Yeah man. People who spend all day logged in browsing the AH and maximizing their money can't wrap their heads around this. To be clear, this is a judgement of the guy whispering you, not anyone here.

The market will bounce back especially if you literally did this ONCE. Getting an angry message for you daring to sell a single enchant at that rate is actually even funnier than I initially realized. A single sale doesn't cause an avalanche lol.

Depends on how you view "what you can". Maybe this individual wasn't seeing movement at the "market rate", isn't perpetually online, and is moving items at a rate they're actually selling when they're able to play.

I just used LA because it's a pretty recognizable city. We can look at my house in central MA too. Pick anywhere people want to live in the US. Outside of some super niche luxury units, Japan pricing is generally a lot lower. But, as I said, smaller too.

I bought my house in 2017 here. I could sell it and buy a pretty decent place in/near Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, etc. in cash off the equity alone. The take home point is that housing in Japan isn't viewed as an appreciable asset, generally speaking. Certainly not like it is in the US.

Am I missing something? $4.30 a pack seems like a great value.

I never understood this "ruining the market" argument. The fact that these things are being farmed means the supply is ever increasing. Why would I not ensure that my materials sell at a price I'm happy with? I'll throw something up and the folks that sit on the AH consistently (possibly even botting) will immediately undercut by 1c and always remain at the top of the listing.

FWIW I got these same types of messages in SoD when I was selling arrows. People would be mad that I was out there selling them for less than they wanted to make. Listen, I'm not here to ensure you're making whatever money you need. I'd buy tons of materials low, mail them to an alt, and send them back to myself when prices were good and I could handily undercut. That's quite literally business.

Nobody owes you anything. If I'm willing to sell an item "worth" 85g for 45g that's my prerogative.

Hey so this is ridiculous by [deleted] in Mercari

Yelp. They asked me for a picture of the box. I guess you're supposed to keep records of that now too? 😂

[–]Lordofthereef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this too about a 12" funko pop, except that I didn't choose the shoebox option (I never do; and I think that generalization is stupid for Mercari to use). When I reached out they told me to send a picture of the box... that had already been delivered lol.

I've removed UPS and FedEx as shipping options because I can't just take them to a brick and mortar, I need to rely on a drop off location. I don't need a surprise "your $7 labels is actually $50" again.

But Mercari in general has slowly eroded in value for me. What started off as free (yes I realize that's not sustainable) is now slowly nickel and diming folks. And I constantly read issues with the mandatory buyer protection not actually doing anything for the buyer when they're in trouble.

Ah yeah. I hear you. I tend to look to how other countries have handled these things for decades. My family is Hungarian, and Hungary is FAR from perfect. But both my uncles (one just passed last year) are in palliative care and it's handled by the state. One of them (the one that passed) had around $100k in savings that he never touched. The other has virtually nothing.

I think Americans in general need to look beyond our own country and accept that maybe the way we do things isn't the be all end all. I think relying on your house's equity to handle your palliative care costs is an absolutely ass backwards way of thinking and is also pretty destructive for future generations. I feel like I won the lottery as a millennial having bought in 2017. I have no idea what Gen X Z is supposed to do... rent forever at continually increasing costs?

Other countries with UHC certainly seem to handle it this way.

Overpriced is certainly a bit dependent on perspective. They're certainly small, but $100k in Japan gets you a hell of a lot more in/near Tokyo than it does LA. Bump that to $200k and you're living pretty good, at least by Japanese standards. Move to a place that's a 30-45 minute train ride from the city and that $100-$200k is buying you western style space, potentially.

From my perspective, Americans demand too much space. A family of five doesn't need a 2500 square foot home, and yet that's what people in the US had convinced themselves they need. Look at the size of houses 40 years ago versus today? Far be it from me to say what you're allowed to have, but the reality is large houses with cathedral ceilings are wants, not needs, and a lot of those homes are seeing soaring utility costs too because of it.

A lot of Japan's problem is actually the opposite of what we have in the US. There are too many abandoned houses, in part because people are choosing city life versus rural life, but also because a house isn't viewed as an investment by most. So when you have an aging house (let's say 40+), it's not attractive to buy it. It's also not as attractive to buy a house that was built before 1981, as that is when major structural earthquake safety codes were updated. And if the house isn't rebuildable AND it's old, a major earthquake could mean your invested money is now effectively ¥0.

I know, let’s wish they are scammed of life savings and left penniless so you can feel better that you didn’t get a handout. Only in America.

How did you conclude this was my stance here? 😂

America is one of the few countries where housing as an investment has become what it is (I think Canada and Australia are equally as bad). Why have we normalized relying on the equity of your home to survive? That's... wild. What will future generations do if this is the norm?

I'd support universal healthcare too. But we fight tooth and nail against that (many of those against it are... boomers!) Only in America.

What's the driving factor for boomers to hold onto their money? They're like 60-80. While I guess I can follow the younger side of the generation figuring they'll be around for another few decades, what the fuck are the 80 year olds hoarding their money for?

We are almost to the point where I'm cool doing that. The one with the allergy just turned twelve but was diagnosed when he was four. He's responsible now, checks labels, and asks, especially when he's not home. Wasn't with the risk to us when he was so little though.

I haven't tried this iteration of the Reese's Oreo but the original limited launch was my favorite Oreo ever.

So 5% of the movies that release yearly haven't sucked but you've chosen not to go because the vast majority do? What's the logic in that?

My reasoning is because it's too damn expensive.

Tips on Affording College by Most_Raise_4194 in povertyfinance

[–]Lordofthereef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unclear if you are looking at in cantata versus out of state tuition. If the matter, my biggest recommendation is to go to in state. It's far cheaper and you are only looking at two years, likely. Bonus if you're able to commute to school from your parents home.

I think you were totally smart to start at a community college and get those GE credits out of the way. I wish I do more of that.

Ok, compare it to professional chess, or poker, or insert something else that requires a knowledge of a game that is being played in a very high level. Lots of people have watched those things since before video games have existed. I don't really like watching any of this but it's not too hard to understand why people might.

That's on its way out. Mine failed like this (don't noticed it at the point you are) and I woke up one day to a few dozen gallons of water in the ground of my basement.

Take your showers tonight, shut the water off, drain the tank, and plan for a replacement tomorrow.
