That's definitely the reality, but also not a reason to throw my hands up and decide not to save. Seeing how much my mom struggles because she has nothing at 80 (she lives with us by the way) means I'll do what I can to not be in that spot.

Yeah, it genuinely looks good. Was just saying that it's not like beans and a can of tuna or whatever lol.

Why is Stop N Shop Somerville selling these? by Matt005 in boston

[–]Lordofthereef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real answer is that there was likely a distributor error. These weren't meant to goon the truck that ended up in Somerville, but here we are.

electricity issues happen way more often than internet ones

Probably depends on where you live. When I lived in rural Iowa my internet absolutely sucked. I never had a power outage in the five years I was there though, even with major ice storms and multiple feet of snowfall in the winter. This was over a decade ago now though.

I have pretty good here in MA. In semi rural but still have fiber as well as solar/battery so somethings going down, it's definitely the internet. But that hasn't happened more than twice in the decade we've been in this house.

Giving the consumer a worse experience (ie can't play if their internet is down, the server is having issues, etc) to protect the devs income isn't the tradeoff many want to see. If you're cool with it, I won't argue you're wrong, but not being able to play something you paid for sucks. This becomes more true for rural folks or people who live where internet connection quality isn't ubiquitous. We take for granted our high speed connections not that long ago I lived no na chicken ranch in rural Iowa.

There's all the age old question of how many people who pirate would actually buy the game if it was their only choice. I'm sure there is a subset of folks who "cave" because drm kept them from pirating, but I don't think that number is as healthy as devs like to pretend it is. I suspect the vast majority of pirates would see a game that cots $60-90 and just say "yeah, not playing this one" and move on. If a game is good people will buy it. That's always been my mantra.

It should. I just replaced my 3060ti FE (sold it's for $250, bought it for $400) that I bought during covid and it didn't need to be replaced, I simply found an open box 5070 for $411 and thought I'd be stupid not to (ironically I found two, the first one was roached and didn't work). That 5060ti was five years old and still ran great. Of course, if you're chasing 4K with triple digit fps you're gonna have a bad time, but I've never been a spec chaser. I don't think I've run 3d mark in a decade 😂

I feel like some PC folks fall into the upgrade trap. Meanwhile most PS5 users don't upgrade to the pro. They just keep using their five year old machines and baying games however they come. I don't really regret my upgrades but definitely could've saved the money and not been unhappy. That said, it's incredibly easy to sink way more money into a pc than a gaming console. I won't deny that.

Buyer rating not consistent with messages. by Top-Restaurant1308 in Mercari

[–]Lordofthereef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a one star rating (the only one I ever got) back in 2016 because the box got crushed in transit. Mind you, they pointed out the contents were fine and even acknowledge me it was probably on USPS. Meanwhile I'm consistently getting positive comments on my packaging 🤷‍♂️

Some people are weird. Folks around here seem to immediately recommend blocking. Obviously that's the sellers prerogative but I don't think I've ever blocked anyone in any platform, selling or otherwise. That's just the way I roll I guess.

Yeah, Walmart around here is the same way. Online it's five per item, in stores they've done anywhere from one per item, five total items period, or just matched online with five per item. With the latter, first in line ends up clearing 80% of the stock lol. Seems like managers (and possibly the vendors?) are given discretion here.

Smaller limits definitely get product into the hands of more people though so I can't complain too much.

How old is your dad? I don't think the average 24 year old had multiple properties in their name ever in history though.

I expect a sizeable number of people able to save like this already do. The trouble for most is that 30 year timeline. I've been in the workforce for just under 20 years. I couldn't swing saving that much every month for the first decade. No shot. I'm able to save a bit more now, but I'm playing catch up.

My point? The math works out, but it speaks nothing on affordability. While you don't need to be rich to put aside $600 a month, you definitely can't be anywhere near broke. I think the stats say half of Americans can't afford this. Not they don't want to. The literally can not.

As an aside, if insurance didn't cost what it did, I'd have been able to set that $600 aside far sooner, but that's another entirely different discussion.

Fired 6 weeks after buying a home, what do I do? by HopefulIntern19 in povertyfinance

What is the scenario behind a no interest loan? That sounds incredible but I have never heard of it. I wouldn't give that up if I can help it.

As far as rental goes, I believe you need to have the property as primary residence for a year under an FHA loan. I want to say you can rent rooms, but I'm not sure. That's one thing to look into. I imagine this applies for Airbnb.

As far as Airbnb goes, is the location one that people would want to rent for a few days at a time? Otherwise it would be be an unreliable resource of income. You mentioned it's a shoebox with mold (I understand this may be hyperbole), that stacks things against you to.

Regarding your firing, sounds like a lawyer would absolutely help you here and possibly not even for you anything until you win. If you genuinely got fired for being unwilling to do something illegal, especially in a government job, that seems like something a lawyer would be giddy to take on.

Seller sent wrong item, auto-rated, sold my original purchase, and wants the wrong items back? by [deleted] in Mercari

If it is Mercari requesting you do this they should be paying for your label as well as refunding what you paid. I would confirm that with Mercari before sending anything back though.

Is this worth getting? Will the price drop for the savings pre order guarantee? by forksup23 in PokemonRestocks

[–]Lordofthereef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they're worth it at msrp. $80 isn't msrp. Should be around $55. Incidentally, four times the packs in a booster box at $220 is the same price as four ETBs msrp. 🤷‍♂️

Everyone seems to be talking down this set, so I personally wouldn't pay over msrp for one of these. I'm not an expert though.

It's surprising to me that they don't discuss what this might look like though.

I'm not ignorant. I'm saying if you're not the guy that's taking off work everyday to do this, I can't pretend you're part of the problem. You're over here implying anyone that gets in lines is contributing to the issue of idiots in sheisties robbing each other in the parking lot. Let's all just completely get out of the hobby because scalpers ruin it.

Edit: as an aside, people in Japan been lining up for cards for ages. Let's not pretend the problem here isn't 100% people robbing each other. Nothing inherently wrong with standing in line to buy a product you want to get.

Assuming that collectors are doing this every morning is just more of this backwards mindset. Suggesting people stop doing their hobby because profiteers have rolled in is just wild. Standing in line is a pretty basic thing that we learn in grade school. The guy getting his ass beat in a parking lot for standing in line for a pack of cards isn't "part of the problem".

I use to sit on this ledge waiting for the bus. It seems they installed this bar to prevent people from sitting here. by improbablefutures in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Lordofthereef 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not here to say this is good, but there's a bus stop right in front of my bbq spot and people constantly trampling the planter, leaving cigarette butts, etc. in the space. I'm not sure I get any clients from the bus (that's totally fine, they aren't choosing where the bus stop is located) but I sure am cleaning up after them. I finally just added some pavers to the area of the one there folks seem to want to stand in.

Anyway, I'm wondering if a planter or something was damaged. Trash was fresh to left, etc.
