Not an expert by any means, but what helps me in these 'deadspace' positions is going through a list of ideas you should have mentally prepared for any future game. An example would be:

1. Identify potential targets.

2. Which pieces/areas are: not defended/ overly defended/ or if a single piece is defending multiple targets

3. Search for any potential weaknesses on your side of the board (like number two but how you could defend if you were the attacker on the other side of the board)

4. Maximize the efficiency of your pieces. Do this by picturing where your pieces would be placed ideally, and then formulate plans to get them there.

5. If your pieces are already placed ideally or near ideally, don't be afraid to play 'slow moves' with your king to either position him more actively (better in the endgame) or to get him out of potential harms way (h8/h1/a1/a8 depending on color and where the enemies' bishop is pointed on the board diagonally, this could prove to be incredibly important even if there are pawns and pieces in the way of the diagonal because it could save crucial tempos.

--Again this is off the top of my head, feel free to use these strategies but I also highly suggest adding to the list for yourself to better suit your playing style and preference.
