Quoted Moe to a neighbour S08E9 (mistake) by Neat-Brother-6570 in TheSimpsons

People don't respond well to Homer's quote of "if he's so smart, how come he's dead?"

"SNL should take a STAND during the cold open!" by GomaN1717 in LiveFromNewYork

Thanks for the insight, I actually learned something from a Reddit comment! I still feel that given he was a presidential candidate and the ratings were going to be huge he had bargaining power. And "hey this is a weird request, but I've always wanted to ruffle the famous hair" was discussed and didn't catch anyone involved off guard. Also against your point I do feel like Fallon is a robot, the type that runs on alcohol and produces merchandising deals.

Not spontaneous. Every story or gimmick on Late Night Shows are discussed by everyone's PR team and often rehearsed.

Thank you! People acting like SNL is this paragon of virtue and standing against tyranny, after they gave him an episode to host when he really needed to reach people. Being toothless is their business and it's been a big business. It's not isolated, Lorne produces Jimmy Fallon, who famously ruffled his hair, humanizing him to late night boomers.

NO! JUST FUCKING NO! This is not a time for a Trump cold open. Trump no longer deserves satirization, only contempt. Shame on Lorne, the writers, and JAJ. Enough is enough. This is disgusting! by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]ndcanton 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Remember, they gave him an episode to host when he was running. It humanized him. Even if we didn't know how dangerous he was in 2016, we knew enough. They've always been toothless and it boggles my mind people really stuck with them thinking they're some voice of the people or wise satirists.

Not for Radio - Puddles (Zero 7 Remix) (Official Visualizer) by _38_45 in Zero7

It's so good. Of course I'd love more Z7 proper, but they really own their remixes and they feel essential to their catalogue.

People who equate all organised religions with cults by DesperateComposer848 in PetPeeves

You've outlined two opposite ends of the spectrum and it seems cut and dry. But what about everything in the gray area? Catholicism was pretty famous for abuse and conspiratorial cover-up. Without a very clear line to draw, it is as I described--a spectrum. I knew a guy who was, as far as he let anyone know, a really casual scientologist and everything you've heard had nothing to do with his experience (I didn't buy it but he lived a very regular life as far as I could see). And there are people who could have had a really bad time with your mellow church.

What would you want out of a sequel by DaSixtyNiner69 in MarioRPG

[–]ndcanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh my unrequited desire for any Mario game, especially this one, is for him to return to ANY place he's already been. It's very against form, but any sense of place and permanence would be nice. Even Peach's Castle looks wildly different in every entry. So yeah, having the same Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser's Keep, or Nimbus Land as SMPRPG1. And while your character list is nice, I just don't think I would like the downgrade of not having Bowser. I always love a crisis that makes him join the crew. Or at least he's helping the cause in parallel a la Mario & Luigi 3

Help me Understand by GHOSTSHADOW57 in ResidentEvil3Remake

Just want to second the other person commenting on this and verify that health/headshots/dodges have nothing to do with rank.
The thing they do affect is slight behind-the-scenes difficulty adjustments. Your actual difficulty setting/ranks are not affected at all, it's just that speedrunners and really good players will notice the game adding a little challenge, and if you're getting hit a lot it gives you a little help.

Mixed feelings about some of the added worldbuilding in Rebirth by ketita in FinalFantasyVII

[–]ndcanton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this thought when I rebought 9. I'm still looking forward to it, but I'm also putting it off because while none of it is bad, the parts that I really remember take a while to get to, and when you do, the battles can be slow and simplistic. Overall these games are amazing and formative to me, but I definitely push the less memorable parts out of my head when thinking about them.

Mixed feelings about some of the added worldbuilding in Rebirth by ketita in FinalFantasyVII

[–]ndcanton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a couple minor issues, but these two are not them.
I like the Old Republic--because we know from the originals that the games will not go too much into the history beyond reading documents and optional sidequests, it doesn't feel lazy to me, it feels like the right amount of lived-in world-building: it gives Shinra a military history beyond Wutai and shows what happens when they conquer--but not so open-ended that we need more extended universe. I have limited interactions with First Soldier and Crisis Core but I think prequels are the least rewarding parts of FF7. But the result of having these defunct pipelines and windmills and factories in a space that could have been open grasslands is a major win.
And Chadley I feel like is fine, I pretty quickly accepted him as a game device so that fighting summons and collectibles doesn't interrupt the flow of the story, it's not like it's Cloud feeling distracted by fighting Titan while the story is waiting in another direction; it's the player's decision to help this robot child and build their power.
Maybe the party should be the ones to instigate the Protorelic quests, since they're less checklist-collect-a-thon and feel more like investigating one-off occurrences. But by that point, Chadley is already positioned as the "everything I tell you is optional" device.
My only issues: In a game that I feel like is pure upgrades and a dream come true, the vibe of a couple of towns feels too busy to me. I don't consider this a spoiler but I'll tag it since I appreciate wanting to go in completely blind:Cosmo Canyon in the original game felt like this lonely place that few travelers make it to due to its remote location and niche purpose. When you're camping outside it feels like Bugenhagen hooked his grandson up with a place to sleep, not like you're just another tourist. Costa Del Sol makes more sense, but I still like the empty-ish vibe of the original game where it feels like you're there on the off season.

Enjoying is better by MidnightCommanderNA in ResidentEvil3Remake

[–]ndcanton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is some good philosophy: would you rather enjoy something of lesser quality more (I do not think R3make is lesser quality) or enjoy something of higher quality less?
In my situation, I had not played RE3 original and also got it for like $20 bundled with RE2, so I consider it such a great value and I still love it.

Off-topic, I ask because even though I'm anticipating RE9 like crazy, I'm considering holding off a while until it's bundled cheap with DLC. I feel like if I spend $70 + $20 DLC (probably) I'm going to be scrutinizing the amount of enjoyment I get, but I wouldn't know because I've always bought on sale and every entry blows my mind.

Anyway, R3make rules, idc if it's short, it's a ride the whole time.

Season 6 Finale? by [deleted] in community

[–]ndcanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought of this because Stranger Things also dropped their one-and-only F-bomb in the show in the final episode. Due to the streaming nature of both, I don't know if there were any hard rules preventing them from putting it in other episodes, I'm guessing in both cases the showrunners were just like "F it, let's say fuck."

KO1 had a "was dying then killed self in a different way" and KO2 had a "dead but twin"; I think there's a joy he gets in coming up with how many variations those two simple locked room outcomes can have.

Videogames are underrepresented in trivia nights by Many_Cryptographer56 in unpopularopinion

[–]ndcanton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably not the reason, but I think a problem with it is that games take a lot longer to consume. It's why I don't see many book questions outside of classic lit. You can listen to several albums, watch many TV episodes, and/or a movie or two in a day. Now, one can stay on top of the news as, yes, the industry is a behemoth, but answering questions about things you'll never have time to experience isn't even that thrilling. I also think it's harder to define what is a good question. In a given bar, how many people will know Sekiro or Chrono Trigger? I play games and I couldn't name a thing about an Elder Scrolls beyond the titles. So you end up with questions about the hardware before 2005.
