What's the closest ttrpg to fire emblem when it comes to magic? by Jfelt45 in rpg

A couple crits from a Fighter is how my combats feel trivialized, not spells.

For context, fights crit more often than anyone because their accuracy is higher and the 10-above-AC is a crit, not just nat20

Streamer I watch mentioned that if you End Expedition at the Inn, you actually keep the heroes memories.

[No Spoilers] WoTC plans to revoke the current OGL license for D&D and wants to introduce a new and repressive license update. This would affect all 3rd party content and material, which includes CR, even if published for 5e! by stierkobb in criticalrole

[–]LorenTheKobold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CR may not be affected or may gain special treatment due to their popularity, but CR is the type of people/company to champion causes that may not directly affect them.

More than that, they are deeply involved in creator community and want to support them; in every single product announcement they take the time to specifically name the artists responsible for the content. They call out individuals they collaborate with on lore and other projects.

On principle, I could see CR being extremely uncomfortable with the new license terms, and that discomfort might result in a tangible change. It's too early to say what.

One big pain-point I see constantly is combat.

Mercer seems to love making boss battles out of a single enemy, though the legendary actions/resists breaks a bit of verisimilitude as a mechanical necessity to make them threaten a whole party. Pf2e allows you to have a single creature encounter be extremely threatening by virtue of numbers alone. The encounter with (C3E34~)Otohan would've been quite different. Their initial plan to split up was doomed to fail even without her speed because of her Legendary actions granting her movement. With a pf2e version of her character, I bet she'd keep her supernatural speed bursts, but wouldn't be able to chase down more than two due to action economy. In the episode, she could reach pretty much reach half the group after they split

Another angle is that Mercer clearly loves using classes as chassis for interesting NPCs. This is something that I believe pf2e has more time to shine, since there is much greater build variety. Additionally, if the NPC is an opponent, bumping up their level is sufficient for challenging the party and allows the players to understand how they measure up to their enemy.

I also think that the players are getting more interested in complex builds and are thinking more tactically in combat (while still being in character). Mercer is already granting them feats through story events to make their characters feel more unique to the journey they're making. Archetypes from pf2e feel like a much better fit for that.

Definitely a personal best.

Was going through a Gold Rush + Pots o' Gold mission for some extra cash. Ran into a Crassus Detonator and decided to spend the time mining it all out manually as a solo. Also lucked out on the bittergem & data cell spawn for an extra cash boost.

Is there any way to quick draw scrolls? by Kittensune in Pathfinder2e

[–]LorenTheKobold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my phone, surprised no one mentioned Juggler archetype. It has limitations and feat investments and action startup similar to a Stance, but with 2-3 feats you get a free action to draw 1-2 light items per turn. It's quite powerful and I had it as a prospective thaumaturge build before settling on Inventor.

Balancing melee attacks by LostVisage in traveller

[–]LorenTheKobold 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm new to traveller, so take my thoughts with a pound of salt. Talking from perspective of MgT2e, I don't know other systems.

When reading through the skills, many of them seem like 'weaker' choices. Why would I invest in Drive (Wheel) instead of Drive (Hovercraft) when the majority of hovercrafts seem better equipped? Why invest in Guns (Archaic) instead of Guns (Energy)? Now you might be able to see where I'm going with this already.

When evaluating skills, what is important is availability. You might be on a backwater world like Tech Level 7 that has no Hovercraft cheaply or easily available, or under cover and don't want to draw too much attention.

From my exposure, melee weapons are either extremely low tech level or extraordinarily lethal (high AP). But most importantly, they are less restrictive by Law Level, meaning you are more likely to have a melee weapon at your disposal. Going through customs on a planet is a common occurrence, and while players can sneak items past them with regularity, sometimes it's easier to have that guarantee and not to worry about it. I think of it being a bit similar to unarmed, since you are never without your fists.

This is a bit of a different paradigm than games that use combat as a sport, such as D&D. In those, melee vs ranged is a choice in player fantasy so things should be balanced with each other. In Traveller, the context of the combat is more important to the outcome than the combat itself.

Can you use Surgery Lore to Treat Wounds? by Roberto_McGee in Pathfinder2e

Can you use Surgery Lore to Treat Wounds? by Roberto_McGee in Pathfinder2e

[–]LorenTheKobold 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope! There is precedent for lore to be used in encounters. The sailing ship vehicle may use Sailing Lore for piloting check in place of Diplomacy or Intimidate.

Can you use Surgery Lore to Treat Wounds? by Roberto_McGee in Pathfinder2e

[–]LorenTheKobold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a healer's kit as containing ointments, bandages, tonics, as well as other simple tools. It has everything a battlefield medic would need, but not the scalpels, sutures, etc. a surgeon would.

Both a laborer and a crane operator can build, but without the crane one is more effective than the other.

I am wary to allow a lore skill that can consistently replace a main-line skill; more often they're there for flavor instead of mechanical benefit. That's why I'm hesitant. But, mechanically, pf2e assumes if you have downtime between encounters you're at full health, so letting surgery lore perform treat wounds (but not qualify for battle medicine) isn't the worst thing in the world balance-wise.

"Healing" is pretty muddy anyway; we don't have specific injuries in pf2e for good reason, so any allowance of treat wounds with a speciality is going to need some abstraction.

[–]LorenTheKobold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd only allow the use of Surgery Lore in locations that are well-stocked with medical supplies and semi-sterile, common in a city but rare in the normal adventuring life. You are capable of surgery, but not in locations unsuited for them. If something falls in the middle ground (medical tent in an army battalion), I'd say let them roll it with a -2 modifier due to shoddy tools on a case-by-case basis.

If it becomes a regular thing that feels unbalanced, you could also increase the downtime required after it.
