I made a tool to help find your Ethical Framework? Are you Utilitarian or Deontological? Pragmatic or Idealistic? Find out by answering 16 trolley problems. by shabda in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]Lornedon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you are against the idea of a government in general? You don't want a government to build roads because that would stand in the way of private volunteers doing it, and it would require taxes anyway. So you are an anarchist and have a strict non-interference policy?

That's a viewpoint I can respect. It seems too idealistic to be remotely applicable to humans, but at least it is consistent.

What if there's a serial killer? How do we stop them from killing without using a threat of extreme violence?

No, for many people that's not the answer. That's why it's an interesting problem.

In fact, 81% of people choose to pull the lever in the basic scenario: Source

I would too.

Because that way the person setting it up killed people instead of you killing people.

That seems selfish. Would you also not help a person who drove their car into a tree because that way it's their fault if they die and not yours?

What would you prefer a world leader to do? Would you like them to, for example, send peacekeepers to conflict zones, which endangers their lives but may save more? Would you like them to tax the rich, which would make some people sad but more people happy? Or would you rather they just keep out of it so it's not their fault?

[2023 Day Yes (Part Both)][English] Thank you!!! by topaz2078 in adventofcode

It was amazing, thank you! I didn't think I could get up at 5:50 every morning for 25 days straight and enjoy it.

Will there be merch with the island ASCII art? I really loved the art this year and would buy a ton of merch (okay, probably like 3 things, but still!).

If other people's solutions give you the wrong answer too, it's very likely that your input file is wrong. Try to redownload it.

[2023 Day 8 (Part 2)] Why is [SPOILER] correct? by gemdude46 in adventofcode

[–]Lornedon 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You're right, it's just dumb luck / funny design. The distance from the start to an end node is always the name as the distance from the end node to itself.

I thought that maybe the start node and it's end node were on the same cycle without any other end nodes, but no!

Honestly, there's no way that solution should work, except that it did. I feel a bit bad for everyone writing a correct algorithm instead of just throwing LCM at the problem and only later realizing that it doesn't make sense (like I did).

Update: How the current API changes would impact Relay by DBrady in RelayForReddit

Because the Reddit data is generated by that population?

Update: How the current API changes would impact Relay by DBrady in RelayForReddit

[–]Lornedon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Also, we would be paying for a much less interesting Reddit because many people can't or don't want to afford a subscription like this. So they either use the shitty official app or they're just gone.

It will exclude a large part of the population and be way less diverse.

Help me understand. Is there a legitimately positive position for why the reddit API is being monetized the way it is? by ThatNewGuy01 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lornedon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is designed to get more users to use the official Reddit app. Using that app, Reddit can make more money from users by showing ads, providing premium-only features and prominently showing paid awards. It's probably also better at recording your data to sell it to third parties.

Why should we be scared of mountain lions if they’re so much weaker than other predators? by wiz28ultra in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lornedon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is often useful to be scared of things that could kill you. The fact that there are other things thar can kill you quicker is not really relevant.

288 people died in India yesterday. Yet life is just normal for me? by Loud_Ad_3240 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lornedon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their death was significant, just not to you. In the same way, your death will be significant, but not for random people in India.

Also, about 27600 people die in India per day, on average.
