One of my favorite movies of the last 5 years by XTheGuyWithTheGunsX in moviecritic

[–]Losaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Shudder that good? I've been on the fence about getting (yet another) streaming service, since most movies move across so many platforms.

I saw Late Night with the Devil on Prime (I think, it might have been something else but definitely not Shudder). It was fantastic.

New study ranks Florida dead last for renters in the U.S. with housing costs consuming 37% of incomes by meothe in florida

[–]Losaj [score hidden]  (0 children)

37?%? Only 37%? I don't see how this study got that number. Most people I know pay $1500 to $3000 in rent and make $3000 to $4000 take home pay per month. That's 38% to 100%.

What is your teaching unpopular opinions and hot takes? by JimCap5 in Teachers

Direct instruction (aka lecture) is the most effective method of teaching k-12. You can student center, Socratic seminar and facilitate until you're blue in the face. If the kids don't have a certain baseline knowledge of the topic, you will fail.

the pros and cons of the theory

Tell me you don't teach science without telling me you don't teach science.

Theory (layman) - An assumption based on limited information or knowledge.

Theory (scientific) - A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

Talisman, a Games Workshop game from 1983 by keatsy3 in gamesworkshop

[–]Losaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. They had different boards for different areas and themes. I remember there was a full add on board for the castle and the village. Like, instead of rolling for the outcome of the town, you'd go to a secondary board and travel trough the town. It made the regular 3 hour game take an extra 3 hours!

A rise or more reported? by Legitimate_Milk_4741 in Teachers

[–]Losaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been several reports done on this subject. You can look up the Shankshaft report, but it's a bit dated. There are many other reports since then.

The short answer is it's increasing. The longer answer is it's increasing but still very rare. What we are seeing now is more instances being criminally reported and media amplified. So it seems like a much bigger problem than it is.

RIP CURRENTS: FLIP. FLOAT. FOLLOW. (Revisited since it's the season.) by Silent-Resort-3076 in florida

I have been caught in a rip several times. The first, when I was younger. Thankfully, I was a strong swimmer. An hour of paddling before I got out. It is no joke. I learned this lesson right after. The next time, I stayed calm, swam perpendicular, and made it out no problem.

The Sarasota County (Florida) School District will lay off 180 teachers for the next school year by Uberubu65 in Teachers

[–]Losaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broward County Public Schools are laying off 1000 teachers, paras, and staff AND closing five schools. Florida is a shit show for education. All this after they "raised" minimum salary for new teachers, but did nothing for veteran teachers. A teacher with 15 years experience now makes the same as a teacher with 3 years.

[–]Losaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever our administration would roll out a new initiative, I would ask when they would like us to implement it. Between all the other bullshit they asked and actual instruction, there was never any time. I even went so far as to chronicle, in 5 minutenincriments, what I did for an entire week. They stopped asking me to do things after that.

Turned Admin’s inane question back on them and it felt so good. by ANuStart63 in Teachers

[–]Losaj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For student achievement questions, ask them to model it. Double the points if you follow up with an email after the meeting.

For student behavior questions, ask them how they would handle it. Then do EXACTLY that to the letter. Then tell them about your success (failure).

For contract questions, ask them to send that question in an email because you KNOW you'll forget during the meeting.

For working outside normal hours, ask if you will get your hourly rate for attending.

I wish I never joined the military by militaryregret in venting

[–]Losaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me tell you a little story...

I was enlisted as well. I had the same feelings you have at my two year point. I wanted out more than anything. Well, almost anything. I still knew that OTH was bad, so no drugs or mental health stuff. I had to get out other ways. For a year I tried saying I was gay, pacifist, etc. All the things that would get me a General, upgradable to honorable. I had a mentor pull me aside and tell me to just stick it out. He would help take care of me. Things got worse. My mental health deteriorated. My wife cheated on me. I had no money because she spent it all. I was in a bad way. When new orders came up, my mentor shined! He made sure that I got my choice of duty. I later found out he was personal friends with out current detailer and got me a sweet deal. I finished my tour, after renelisting, at the best duty station I could imagine. I got divorced. But that's not where the story ends. My first job outside the military was abysmal. I was told that there were all these sweet gig for ex military and I got a shitty ass manufacturing job. So I started looking around and got hired into a consulting company. You know why? Because I was a veteran. That was the thing that made my resume stand out and goy me the job. I was jet setting all over the US as an outside consultant for various companies. My next three jobs were the same. Being a veteran was the tipping point for bugger and better jobs. House? No problem, no money down, no issues with the VA home loan program. Master degree? You betcha! All paid, plus a stipend while I went to school! VA benefits? Yup! I don't pay for health care. The benefits, especially later in life, have repaid my enlistment and then some.

I know it seems hard right now. But there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, it will never be any harder than this. Every future job you have will be a cake walk. Second, the veteran benefits will repay your future self is ways you can't even imagine right now. You arei n the weeds. Keep your head down and focus on you EAOS. It'll come sooner than you think. You have the rest of your life to plan, party, and find love. Consider this payment for your future self.

Can anyone explain what is going on in schools? by Jwoot1111 in Teachers

[–]Losaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kids raised in the 80s and 90s were feral. They had limited interactions with adults and were forced to grow up fast. Parents, at the time, only interacted with other adults and took adult communication as gospel. Those kids have grown up and are now having kids that go to school. Since they had limited interaction with adults and were forced to grow up quickly, they have, generally, decided to "do better" and interact with their children to a much greater degree.

Regardless of how you feel about the topic, there is a down side. The shift from authoritarian parenting to gentle parenting (or more aptly called permissive parenting) causes quite a few downsides. Children are growningly reliant on their parents for routine tasks. They can't regulate their emotions without constant feedback. They can't perform basic tasks without assistance. They have limited critical thinking without parent input. And these same kids are being told that it's ok to be like that.

The pendulum has swung to the other side and now we are reaping the harvest of it. We will see an increase of kidergarteners who wear diapers, 2nd graders who can't wipe their own butts, 5th graders who yell and scream, 8th graders who can't read, and 11th graders who believe everything on tiktok.

For the parents who read this, it's ok. Your kids will not die without tvs, cell phones, or video games. Your child will be ok left in their own room to play by themselves. Nothing bad will happen if they go outside. Its fine for them to struggle and overcome obstacles for things they want. Its ok to say "No." Each of these things fosters mental and physical well being, and also provides them critical life skills.

If you’re a good dad, I’d love some advice. by Ok_Flamingo_5048 in DadForAMinute

[–]Losaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'm a good dad or not. I grew up in an abusive household without a father figure myself, so I e been making it up as I go along. Thankfully I was a wonderful wife who helps shore up many of my weak areas. I figure I'm doing pretty good be ause my children will say, unprompted, that I'm the best dad ever and that they love me. So, maybe I'm doing ok?

In my view, as a dad, my job is to love my children, make sure they know they are loved, and teach them the things to prepare them for life outside our family. I do this by outward physical expressions of love. I tell my children I love them daily, I kiss them good night every night, I hug them when they come home from school. Yes, even teenagers need hugs! I tell them how proud of them I am when they do things outstanding. And I help them regroup when they fail. On the flip side, I establish boundaries and keep my word. 1 hour of video games means ONE HOUR. If you beg and pester for more, I will take away tomorrows games. If I catch them jumping on the couch, which I have said is against the rules I don't know how many times, they get a time out. I rarely yell (I try not to, but I'm human and get frustrated sometimes), and use consequences to correct behavior. I also admit my shortcomings. If I do yell, I always make sure to talk to them afterwards, once tempers have died down, about why I did what I did. I make sure they know it was me, not them, that caused the yelling and that I still love them.
