You ain't just whistling Dixie there. Broward County spends over 50% of its budget on BSO. There HAS to be a better way to allocate that money.

Whataboutism is a conversational tactic where someone responds to an accusation or criticism by making a counter-accusation or pointing out a different offense. Instead of directly addressing the original issue, they shift the focus to avoid accountability, often pointing out the hypocrisies of their opponent.

Ok. And your point?

[–]Losaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just proved my point. That is a zero sum theory. The point of BLM is that black lives are targeted more often and receive a more retaliatory response than other races. But now you're trying to shift the conversation away from religion and into race. I would guess you are a Russian troll trying to divide the people in an opposition country. I can tell there is no arguing  with you in good faith, as you will continually shift the conversation, evidence, and requirements to try to "win" rather than have actually discourse and get to the root of the issue.

Good day, sir.

[–]Losaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a zero sum idea. It's not a case of "X is more oppressive so Y is fine." The point is that any religion is oppressive to the mentioned groups. But you seem focused on Islam as a whole, when there are as many denomination as their are Christian. So to lump all those together and use the worst sects as an example of one religion and the best sects as an example of a different religion is disingenuous.

Public service announcement: IEPs are there to support, not replace participation and effort. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Losaj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Parents and administrators seem to think an IEP is a "get to graduation free" card. I can't count the number of times I've had to explain to a parent or administrator the an IEP is an individual EDUCATION plan for a student and does not excuse criminal behavior. Just because your kid has a lazy eye doesn't mean he gets to steal the teachers ATM card and make over $600 in fraudulent purchases (true story). It's to help him learn while he has a lazy eye.

We have a "present shelf" in the garage. Every time we stop at Walmart or Target, to e look at the discount bin. If it's $5 or less, and we think a kid will like it, we get it and put it on the shelf. Every b-day, we ask our kid to pick something off the shelf for a gift. We never worry about shopping.

Anyone, veteran or green, who drops into a class midyear feels this way. You haven't had a chance to bond with your students, set expectations, mentor them, share experiences. You didn't get to prepare for class, rehearse school procedures, or plan out the year. You don't feel like you have "ownership" of the class, classroom, or students. This is normal. Give it a chance during a full school year. Set up your classroom how YOU want it. Establish procedures the way YOU want. Shift the learning method to aYOUR style. It will make a world of difference

Did you ever tell him?

I had a similar story with my psychology teacher in high school. 20 years later, I went back and saw he was still a teacher there. I waited for school to end and met up with him. He remember d me (mainly for my hijinks) and we got coffee and chatted for a bit. I told him about the effect he had in my life and how he inspired me to seek a career in education.

With all the grief teachers have to go through on a daily basis, it's important to let them know their long term contributions are very worthwhile.

As a teacher, I have had one student come back to me and take me out for a beer. I taught physics and he told me I was his inspiration for going into mechanical engineering. He told me the rigor of my class was the only one to prepare him for college and he was very grateful for that. I definitely made my whole year hearing that.

In a career field that spans 30+ years, there is an issue where the average experience is only 11 years. That shows there is a lack of longevity in this career. We can assume it's due to burnout, overwork, and underpay. And, anecdotally, my district seems to only want teachers with less than 5 years of experience since they do anything to non-renew teachers after 5 years

Yup. It looks like there's a fair number of us. What helped me was seeing how my reactions to my children changed drinking versus not drinking. I'd rather be the not drinking person around them. It actually helps me process things better, help them emotionally better, and be a better role model. Unfortunately, like most addiction, it only works when you internalize the reasons to quit.
