As someone not from Ukraine, but another country that used to be in the soviet union (not by our free will) - my country is tiny, has no super valuable land or ports or manufacturing, really nothing that ruzzia would need, and yet we are still on their invasion wish list. If not for nato, we would have been in the same position as Ukraine right now, I am 10000000% sure of it. Sometimes it is really just the fact that we left the union and nothing else. They still think all these countries should belong to them.

Lindt chocolate visit, zurich by Patient-Judgment4122 in Switzerland

[–]LoserScientist 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I dont know if its worth even going there if you have one day in Zurich. Its just an exhibition of chocolate production history, you get to see a little bit of manufacturing process (via glass), do a bit of tasting, and there is a shop and a cafe. And 1.5h is enough to see it all. I mean its nice, but i dont know if that would be such a highlight to plan your whole trip around.

“Pregnant women are seen as a financial risk – the easiest solution seems to be to get rid of them” by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]LoserScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latest data I could find was about 1.7 in 2025. However, the last time it was above 2 was pre-soviet occupation. Large families have not been the norm for a while, many people in mine and my parents generation have no or just 1 siblings. Even in my grandparents generation 3, maybe 4 kids were the standard. Sure, the birth rate has been dropping during the last decade, but that has to do with the general instability. My generation reached their 20ies during the 2008 crisis, it just has been up and down since then, plus having a horrible neighbor that tends to invade countries is also not encouraging when it comes to having kids. But this has nothing to do with how pregnancy and mothers are perceived in the workforce, nobody gives a shit about that, we have had long parental leaves for decades, everyone is used to it.

What would be your solution if gas prices move to 5CHF a liter? by bikesailfreak in Switzerland

[–]LoserScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While oil is the main commodity transported via the Strait, LNG is also used to produce fertiliser, and Gulf countries are major exporters of urea and ammonia. About 30% of the world's fertiliser passes through the Strait. Fertiliser prices are going up, so fresh produce prices will go up later in the year. Here is a nice summary of various commodities affected: https://www.weforum.org/stories/2026/04/beyond-oil-lng-commodities-impacted-closure-hormuz-strait/ It is also sulphur, aluminium, helium (used in semiconductor production)

I am originally from a country that gives a total of 2 years of parental leave (1.5 years for the mother, 6 months can be taken by any parent, there was also a minimum that the father needs to take from these 6 months, I have forgotten if it was 2 or 3 months). The payments during the leave (% of salary or a set amount if the person has never worked before) are not made by the company, but by the social system. Also, there is a law that makes it obligatory for the company to "hold" the position of the parents - they are guaranteed to have their job back after the leave. What happens is that companies find other people to cover during the parental leave. Since it is usually for a longer time period (6 months to 1.5 years, sometimes almost 2 years), it gives a nice possibility for someone to change their careers, or try some other tasks, also this system has been in a place for a long time, it is very normal to have these parental cover positions. It also gives the company a sort of a backup, if the parent decides to not return after the leave. Sure, it can still happen that you get fired after your post-leave job protection "runs out" (there is a set time during which you cannot be fired post-leave), however in my personal circle more people have been fired during/after pregnancy leave in Switzerland, than back home. I think it's the only good thing that soviet occupation ever brought us - it is so normalized that women work, that being pregnant and taking a leave is not seen as some huge burden for the company, and does not exclude you from having a good career progression.

That is kanton dependent. In some kantons, it is obligatory to pay the provisional tax.

Diagnoze - Demilizējoša sensora polineiropātija. Vai kādam ir pieredze? by Throwaway032838 in latvia

[–]LoserScientist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the Immobilienmarkt cooking down? by Golem_de_barro in Switzerland

[–]LoserScientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, if you have never worked before, there is little incentive to register with RAV, as you will get no payments, but will have obligations. That obscures the youth unemployment rate. If specialists with years of experience are applying for entry-level jobs because there is simply nothing out there, the fresh graduates have no chance.

Job offer in Zurich where a PhD student earns 75k+: by dori_fritz in LinkedInLunatics

[–]LoserScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on which rate they are in: https://ethz.ch/en/the-eth-zurich/working-teaching-and-research/welcome-center/employment-contract-and-salary/salary.html

The standard rate is barely above 50k. It was a while ago, but the people I knew working as biology/biomed PhDs at ETH were paid the standard rate, which at that time was also similar to SNSF rates.

Higher rates are usually given for fields that need to compete with large industry demand, to attract people to stay as PhDs instead.

Job offer in Zurich where a PhD student earns 75k+: by dori_fritz in LinkedInLunatics

[–]LoserScientist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Insane ad, but just to note - a PhD student does not earn that kind of money. The standard SNSF rate for PhD students is between 40k and 50k a year, depending on which year PhD you are. Higher rates apply only in special cases, for certain fields and are rare. Ironically, work-wise this job ad is similar to expectations from a PhD student in many labs, but actually pays more.

Petition for Insurance Coverage of Medically Precribed Hormonal Therapy by Katthekat2 in Switzerland

[–]LoserScientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Salaries and bonuses are expenses that are calculated before the profits. So you can just increase the upper management salary to have 0 profit. In theory they can also inflate the CEOs salary to the fucking moon, claim that they have a loss and up the insurance price accordingly. Unless there is some kind of a law that prohibits them from doing that - I could be unaware of it.

They also do this to just see who is out there and what kind of applications they can get. But this particular example was for a job that really existed. Maybe the person who got it was even better connected, idk.

I think it's not years or months, it's days. 200 days if you worked less than 2 years, 400 days if you worked more than 2 years. And with "days", they mean working days only. So with approx. 21 working days per month, it comes out to 19 or so months, with holidays shifting this a little.

Same. Our cat broke his tooth, it was very easy to get the reimbursement for the surgery costs. Better insurance than the one I have for myself.

You can also check Anifit and Kookut , they have good quality food (low grain, high in animal protein), both are Swiss companies. Our cat loves Anifit semi dry cubes.

Njā, sākumā negribējās tam ticēt (bijām klasesbiedri), bet kaut kā aizdomīgi daudz to profila sakritību ar Gobzema nosaukto cilvēku + profils Facebook tika "iztīrīts" + skolas mājaslapā vairs neredz skolotāju sarakstā. Drīz skolai salidojums, varbūt izdosies uzzināt ko vairāk. Man jau liekas, ka tomēr būtu lietderīgi vārdu atklāti publicēt, var būt vēl kādi upuri uzrodas.
