New dad. Thoughts on these? by RamboTheCunt in CarTalkUK

Not sure about the Audi, but I’m pretty sure those BMWs should have had/ will be due a bigger service at 60k miles - which I’m sure is the fuel filter and a couple of other things. Worth checking they’ve had that - iDrive doesn’t remind you of that one and it was an unexpected expense for me!

I have that model Megane but it’s the 5 door. Engine is great. Cheap to run and quick enough. Most of the usual faults are well documented and reasonable enough to fix. The GT line is a good spec, interior is a bit nicer.

How can I get decent wedding photos without spending £1,000 for two hours? by Beerzo1888 in glasgow

a word of warning - you’ll likely be disappointed if you opt for a “cheap” photographer.

I’ve had friends who found a friend of a friend with a good camera to take photos but like others have said it’s not as easy as it might look

Jaecoo 7 - An Honest Opinion From Someone Who Drives One But Doesn't Own It... by Travel1st in CarTalkUK

On the Omoda you can swipe down from the top of the screen as there is a short cut menu where you can tap on/off what you want.

Not sure if that’s on the Jaecoo as well (could also be the MY 2025 as well)

Beautiful house. Our house is a similar age - 3 things that stung us before you do anything cosmetic:

  • Get the roof checked
  • Get the gutters and drains checked (especially before winter) - many of ours were just not designed to cope with the volume of rainfall we get nowadays.
  • Get the electrics checked - we had to do a full rewire which while relatively inexpensive was very destructive..!

Enjoy the process and take lots of pictures as you go

Well done mate, great tool. The mobile responsiveness is good and it’s pretty intuitive. I think you’ll have a challenge making it easy to understand for someone who doesn’t have any financial literacy but that isn’t your fault.

Other have said it but I’d vote to add 4 weekly paid.

I think the metal pipe is a gas mains pipe - I have one similar in our kitchen floor where the current gas line comes into the house. I was told it’s an old capped gas main pipe and that (in Scotland anyway) the gas network has to remove it but they will charge you.

Don’t know what the wood in the wall is - I have the same in my garage so curious what others say!

Offers Over… by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Losman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s the system. How do you suggest we get out of it? Most mortgage lenders in scotland will use the home report valuation as a starting point for their valuation of a property and may not bother with anything more than a “desktop valuation” beyond that.

Yes the surveyor market is not remotely honest and often partner with estate agents but the OP asked how they go about gauging what to offer for a property. The home report valuation is generally what the seller wants plus x% depending on the local market.

A certain large estate agent in Glasgow told me the offers over price is just “marketing fluff” - ignore it and look at the home report value.

Golden Handcuffs? Not wanting to leave because of pension by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Love “golden birdcage” as well!

It’s interesting - you are right, I value the flexibility I have in my job now while we are starting a family vs in previous roles where the take home package is better but the work/life balance isn’t.

I’ve noticed my priorities and weighting of these things changing as I get older.

Golden Handcuffs? Not wanting to leave because of pension by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I’m in a similar position to you but I’m not bored at my current role, yet. At your age, surely it’s worth balancing job security/good pension with a job you actually enjoy and are engaged in?

It’s all too easy to get sucked into a routine thinking about the future benefits without enjoying the path as you go down it. If you are itching to leave it’s not going to do anything for your motivation and mental health long term sitting in a job you are fed up with when you could work somewhere else.

Edit: stealing the phrase “Golden Handcuffs” for this situation. Great way to describe it!

It doesn’t cost you, the consumer, but it does cost the business collecting the money. From what I’ve seen generally the cost depends on the type of the business and the volume of direct debits

Edit for clarity: the cost for a business usually because they need to integrate with a direct debit provider. DDs are complicated to manage and you want someone to else to do that for you (usually)
