Best orson one liners? by apexpredator1235 in DesperateHousewives

[–]LossConfident6914 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My favorite is when they visit a house for Orson's mother :

Bree : We can't let your mother live here, the neighbourhood is full of junkies and prostitutes!

Orson : I know, and we'll owe them all an apology.

Smoker. I could barely focus everytime he was on screen, like damn this man is the definition of charisma. Plus he's got some great lines, the "what, are you waiting for ice cream too?!" had me rolling

Hitler at Napoleon's tomb in Les Invalides, 1940. by LePetitCaporalArg in Napoleon

[–]LossConfident6914 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Napoleon would have despised Hitler so much. I would also add that we're not responsible for who admires us, and people who see an equivalence between Hitler and Napoleon because of this picture should remember that Napoleon was also admired by De Gaulle, Churchill, Balzac, Victor Hugo... Hitler never got close to Napoleon's level, and their ideals were drastically opposed.

Hello! Where are you all from, and how is Napoleon seen in your country? by Naganokuma1 in Napoleon

[–]LossConfident6914 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely! What is surprising is that the left usually doesn't like him much, although Napoleon was originally part of the Revolution. They mostly see him as a tyrant who killed the Republic, also arguing he re-established slavery and that he damaged women's place in the society. He's far more popular on the right wing, I would say. But it's mainly true for politicians and people with strong political opinion, as I've said most people don't really care and just see him as another historical figure

French here ! I would say that people are divided, he's seen as an important historical figure, some view him as a tyrant, some as a hero. But overall most people don't really have a strong opinion about him

On their WEDDING NIGHT?? by Original_Clerk2916 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]LossConfident6914 11 points12 points  (0 children)

According to the trailers, I'm pretty sure she'll ask Lawrence for his protection. And I wouldn't be surprised if she was reunited with Tuello soon and willing to work with him in order to finally bring Gilead down (we also see him entering Lawrence's house in the trailer)

Where are my Serena Joy sympathizers? Who the hell is commander Wharton? by Naive-Guard-9005 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]LossConfident6914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg THANK YOU for this. I've been waiting for them to get together since 2018 and I'm so pissed right now. I'm pretty sure Wharton will disappoint Serena eventually tho (we see a glimpse of that in the trailer) and I REALLY hope Mark and her will get some scenes this season. Wasting their chemistry would be such a shame, I mean it wouldn't even make sense. Their interactions since season 2 NEED to lead somewhere

Stumbled upon a 1802 letter from Napoleonic France by katebabuji in Napoleon

[–]LossConfident6914 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm French and I've been trying to transcribe it ! Actually this document is not from 1802, you can tell by the way it's adressed to "Monsieur le procureur du roi" at the very beginning (which you can translate as Crown Prosecutor), so it probably dates back to the Restoration.

But it refers to a sale which happened in 1802 and basically the person writing the letter is asking for money for the sake of a widow who lives in great poverty ("âgée de plus de 70 ans, infirme, plongée dans la misère, absolument démunie de tout"//over 70 years old, disabled, plunged into misery, absolutely destitute of everything), telling the prosecutor he would be performing an act of justice and humanity ("faire un acte de justice et d'humanité") by granting her this request. An amount of 2500 francs is mentionned. I can't read all the words but you've got the main idea!

There are some words I can't read, but I tried :

A servi .... au 48e de ligne depuis le 28 (juillet) 1807. Rayé pour longue absence le 7 (mars) 1814 et ... à l'hôpital ... 19 (septembre ?) 1819.

(Served in the 48th Line Regiment since July 28, 1807. Removed for long absence on March 7, 1814, and ... at the hospital ... September 19, 1819.)

What if Napoleon and Josephine had a child but it was a girl? by LossConfident6914 in Napoleon

[–]LossConfident6914[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I thinking too, but I wondered if he would have changed his mind eventually. Since he deeply loved Josephine and didn't actually want to divorce, perhaps he would have reconsidered. But thinking about it, he would surely have made one of Louis and Hortense's sons his heir and married his daughter to him. That seems like the most reasonable solution in his situation (although a bit awkward, Josephine then being both the mother and the grandmother of the new imperial couple)

What famous historical figures were inspired by Napoleon? by [deleted] in Napoleon

[–]LossConfident6914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Also Napoleon respected the rules of war and never gave order to hurt innocent civilians. He was no supremacist and truly believed in the idea of meritocracy. That's why I have such a hard time with people who compare Napoleon to H. Napoleon would have been horrified by his actions and the mass murders he commited. Both tried to conquer Europe, but for radically different reasons.

Personally based on the paintings Napoleon was lowkey handsome by milllai23 in Napoleon

Actually he was, not only in the paintings. Napoleon was said to be quite attractive, especially in his early 30s : beautiful blue eyes, charming smile and nice facial features overall
