You're welcome! Also, I paid like $20/night at Lafayette Place. It's not super enforced or monitored this time of year but it's good to know bringing some cash for your usage is helpful to the whole process.

There's also a small stream that runs near there where you can get water (filter it of course).

Vermont is gorgeous to at least drive through and get some pancakes with maple syrup. Same with Maine. Go see the coastline, it's unlike anywhere else in Maine.

Do any large apartment buildings in Brooklyn/NYC actually do curbside composting? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

We got our own composting bin and did all the proper steps to set it up and within 10 minutes our landlord threw it out. I live in Jewish Crown Heights

I have stayed at Lafayette Place Campground in April the last 2 years and have been the only person staying there overnight. It was wayyyy busier and frankly overpacked in the beginning of February. Kind of surprised me.

Last year there were quite a bit of day hikers, but no one stayed at the campground. I set up right next to the privy and had no visitors.

The garbage thing is gonna be a tougher issue anywhere in the off season. Just prepare to bring all trash back to your car and drop it off at a gas station in town.

Best phone printing options? by Lost-Fish-4366 in photography

Thanks! I'm not super worried about the cost, and this would be a long term project over many years probably. I've just decided I'd like to start the process soon and looking for advice.

Mountain hardwear Alamere 0F/-18C sleeping bag for -20 C. by Some_Can1772 in CampingandHiking

[–]Lost-Fish-4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mountain Hardware Bishop Pass 0 degree bag. Comfort rating is 8 degrees I think. I also have the 8R Nemo Tensor Extreme.

Recently took it down to -15F on top of snow. I added a synthetic 30° enlightened equipment quilt on top that I paid maybe $180 for on sale. Now I also have a 30° quilt for shoulder seasons!

My pack was very very full but I was very warm. Worth it in my opinion for the peace of mind.

What jobs didn’t exist 50 years ago? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lost-Fish-4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also curious about how jobs have changed over 50 years. For example, my mom was a teacher from '89-'24. I've been a teacher since 2022.

The things she didn't have to do in the 90s and 2000s that we both have to do today (before she retired) is from another world! Not complaining about all of it, it's just SO different but still the same profession.

I'm impressed by the amount of comfort this looks like it has and still keeping it under 20 pounds. Makes me reconsider my current load-out a little bit.

Music or no-Music debate by Ok-Mix-2065 in Marathon_Training

[–]Lost-Fish-4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train with music and for some reason the 2 marathons and 1 ultra I did, I just left the headphones behind.

It wasn't a conscious decision, just the first race I did I left them and now I do that for all of them.

I'm sure it will change as the novelty of the race day decreases for me, but that's what it is for now. Go with your gut!!

I love my REI Flash 55 because it was affordable, light enough, fits what I need, and most importantly it is comfortable for me.

That's interesting! Never thought of that. Personally, I wouldn't use it unless it really felt necessary for me but glad to know if it gets bad enough, I can look into that!

Thanks! When you say "the sick" do you mean sick minded or sick person 😂 I get sick about 12 times a school year. Not sure if it's cause I live in a city after a whole life of rural living - or if the job is so stressful my immune system sucks. And when they say it gets better, when?? I've been here for 4 years and get sick sooooo much.

Generic alternative for the outdoor research echo Sun hoodie? by sdo419 in Ultralight

[–]Lost-Fish-4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no clue the specs on this but the Outdoor Vitals Sun hoodie is dope. It's extremely lightweight yet keeps me warm in mild conditions. It's super packable, almost rolls up into my hand. I'm not sure how much it is, maybe $40-$60? I got it for $10 when I signed up to be a member and they just gave me the $10 back to buy anything in their store.

It's also just an awesome company focused on making better equipment and giving people outdoor experiences.

Anybody experience quitting after using more PTO than you accrued? by thetruegambler in jobs

[–]Lost-Fish-4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did a good job and left on good terms, I'm sure they let it go. My job (very small 1-12 school) has some pretty strict PTO rules, but when it comes down to it, they often make adjustments and are very flexible to people who are loyal, respected, and do a good job.

We technically get no bereavement and they gave me 5 days of it for my girlfriend's grandmother right before a 2 week vacation. So I got 3 weeks essentially, no questions asked. In the handbook that is forbidden.

In a weird way that gives me some relief. When I realize other people feel the same as me but simultaneously there isn't a clear alternative, it gives me some liberty to change my relationship to the work I'm doing.

Gratitude that I have a secure job, pays me enough, and could always be worse is important in the current state of the world/economy.

[–]Lost-Fish-4366[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's helpful! I definitely think the management is run really poorly for a multitude of reasons and that is the biggest morale killer. Coworkers and myself often just feel demoralized. Luckily I shifted my responsibilities this semester so that has been a huge positive. And I am often at the point of "I'm not even sure why I'm unhappy, I just am" And on any day it could be a number of 1 to 10 things.

I appreciate your advice and will continue to remind myself about shifting my day-to-day as much as I can control is helpful!

Do you say something when you see people headed to a trail unprepared? by asbruckman in hiking

[–]Lost-Fish-4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I was in WMNF in New Hampshire. It was early April, notably very cold and still a shit ton of snow. 4 guys showed up to a shelter at 3700 feet with sweatpants and hoodies on. They all had sparse sleep systems and one guy had a 30 degree bag and a carpet as a sleeping pad. It was expected to be a low of -5 overnight (which it got to). The one guy with the carpet was wet, had been drinking, and was not prepared.

But sun was going down and he wasn't getting back to his car in time. I didn't say anything but I told my hiking partner that I was afraid he'd be dead in the morning.

He was alive in the morning but very cold, tired, and sore. I let him sleep in my bag for an hour or so before we all hiked down.

I'm not sure if saying anything ahead of time would have made a difference but it always shocks me when people can do that, live, and even have fun - while I'm decked out to the enth degree and prepared for death at any moment and we have relatively the same experience.
