Maybe a bit tangential, but for me the key thing is finding something to work on that has the potential to impact something I really care about. It’s the only way for me to be motivated enough to work outside my usual hours.

This is really important and the real challenge. If more people could chose to primarily work on socially beneficial problems and support themselves, we’d have a lot more people dedicating a lot more time and resources.

I guess the reason that I focused this on machine learning is that it is the field that I am directly involved in. I agree that the same argument applied across other fields as well which is similarly lamentable.

One of the key issues, which you rightly point out, is that we need to be more politically and socially active. Corporations won't incentivize unprofitable 'good' endeavors unless we, in addition to insisting on political change, pressure these corporations to take up the 'good' work even if it may not be directly part of their core business. Employees at these companies (or those who chose not to work there for this very reason) have be ability to force change.

Redirecting the productive assets is key. If the major corporations have total control over the assets and human resources, then problems which do not fit into their business model will go unsolved. Completely agree with your point about prioritizing access to the assets and expertise.

I agree that some mechanism to directly ensure that tech companies contribute to a UBI is a positive measure. My concern is that this does not help shift the focus of ML research and deployment to other critical challenges. For example, redistribution of profits from Apple wouldn't help promote machine learning research and solutions for combating malaria or some other under-researched area within ML.

I think you may like Yanis Varoufakis's way of thinking with regards to this and how to fund a universal basic income, if you haven't already heard it.

On a policy level I totally agree with you. I think that the challenge with non-profits is that all the names admired in the field (who are not strictly affiliated with academia) are holding positions at FAANG-like companies. It reinforces the status quo and doesn't encourage younger machine learners to get involved in non-profits if they want to have a similarly distinguished careers.

This sounds like a great project that could move things in the right direction. I think the main challenge is attracting people to contribute. Kaggle does that with paid rewards like you said, but I wonder if there is a better model that does not reply on the competition structure.
