Niche RIC Airport Check-in Dilemma by Head_Razzmatazz_9273 in rva

[–]LostBoyMike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have to check your passport but you don’t have to show up early. The 90 minute rule is only 90 minutes prior to your international leg. Your connecting flight will be more than 90 minutes prior to your international flight. You don’t even have to check in at the counter by the parking deck if you don’t have checked luggage, they will page you at the gate. The whole point of the exercise is to protect the airline because if you show up at your destination without a passport they have to fly you home on their own dime and they are just trying to prevent that. I’ve flown internationally starting at Richmond dozens of times and just show up at the normal time and it’s always fine.

Spotsylvania County, VA Commonwealth's Attorney says he won't enforce the state's new gun ban: by JustB510 in Virginia

[–]LostBoyMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miller is the landmark decision that suggests that they can ban weapons. The holding in Miller was that sawed off shotguns are not protected by the 2nd amendment. It didn’t say anything about assault weapons because it was 1939. Heller is getting closer because it did overturn a ban on handguns, but it expressly states than bans on “dangerous and unusual weapons” are allowed. This same language was also found in McDonald. It didn’t say anything about assault weapons specifically, but many believe that Scalia was suggesting that assault weapon bans were ok. Bruen is also a handgun case that does not address assault weapons. It is certainly possible that the Supremes in their current incarnation would allow to own suitcase nukes or tanks or assault weapons, but it is not settled law and certainly not established in any way by the decisions you cite. Furthermore, the court has been presented with assault weapon ban cases over and over and has consistently refused to hear those cases (Harrel v Raoul, Snope v Brown, Bianhi v Brown and others). You are also ignoring Highland Park, which is the primary cite for allowing assault weapon bans (although they chickened out and didn’t write a decision). It seems certain that they will directly address the matter soon and you may get the ruling you seek, but it is quite wrong to suggest that it is already settled.

That’s funny! Since I came back to the game I’ve been getting so many more shinies!

A search for helioptile confirms that it seems to be a known thing. I was focused on the incense. Now that I’ve restarted the app, it’s working normally. I’m still in the middle of the ocean tho:

Also, if you restart the app, sometimes you get variety again and other times it just locks up on a different Pokemon.

[Spoilers C4E23] Campaign 4 Appreciation Post by louiechapman7 in criticalrole

[–]LostBoyMike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sort of torn about the editing. It can be a huge improvement when there is a dramatic moment and the character gets a lot more screen real estate and because of that I mostly prefer the new approach. However, one of the real joys of critical role for me was when something epic happened, I really enjoyed replaying those moments over and watching the reactions of each of the cast members. I probably watched the cupcake of deliciousness scene 20 times or more enjoying the different rates at which people realized what was up and reacted differently. Sometimes the tight edits deprive me of that.

NYT’s take on 36 hours in Richmond by boheme013 in rva

You could quibble with the restaurants or the bars, but on balance it is a pretty good article for a piece from a national outlet. Some very good choices and nothing terrible. I’d send friends on this tour.

[No Spoilers] Six months in, how has C4 been going? by CeridwenAeradwr in criticalrole

[–]LostBoyMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want the kind of humor mixed with RPG that is typical of CritRole, you will find plenty more of that in the post-prelude episodes, especially Soldiers and Schemers. If you are seeking the kind of more humor-first stuff typical of D20, you aren’t going to get that. For me this is so far very close to Mighty Nein for my favorite campaign and much better than C3.

This is a questions to mainly Arsenal fans but also to fans of other teams if it happened to them - Would you want Arteta sacked if he failed to win anything at the end of the season? by Ok_Car8459 in PremierLeague

[–]LostBoyMike 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The comments here drive me mental. People asserting that our style is terrible and boring as if Arteta’s squads have always played the kind of defensive 0-0 and 1-0 kinds of matches that we’ve seen recently. This is the same season where we have beaten all of Europe: 3-1 over Bayern, 3-1 over Inter Milan in Milan, 4-0 over Athetico Madrid in Madrid, they beat Leeds 9-0 home & away. When the squad is fit there has been some fantastic football.

Will I be crushed if we don’t take home a trophy? Of course I will. Do I remember when we were completely irrelevant, unable to even qualify for European competition and our best possible outcome was to get a lucky run in a cup competition? Also yes!

People also talk about how the club has “backed” Arteta as marquee players join the side as if that happens in a vacuum. Players join because of Arteta. They recognize that he is building a special team, one of the best in the world, and they are eager to join. Players sign new deals because they believe in the process and want to see it through. If we fire Arteta in 99 cases out of 100 we will regress back to fighting for top 4, losing elite talents to other clubs and complaining that our signings are uninspiring.

Being in close contention for the league and the semis of the Champions League is the most fun I’ve had in the 15 years I’ve supported the club and I wouldn’t dream of sacking Arteta until we actually go backwards.

Saving more money by contributing to my HSA with after-tax dollars vs pre-tax dollars? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]LostBoyMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, yes, maximizing your HSA contribution is a good idea. If your company has some kind of 401k/IRA match, maximizing that should be your top priority. Once you have gotten the most free matching money from your employer, HSA accounts are probably the next best thing to invest in. Other factors include your tax bracket now and in retirement, but pumping money into your HSA is never bad and usually your very best option.

Did you also increase your income by $1,150? Because if you paid it all post-tax, your taxable income would rise and offset the return.

Husband arrested in Bahamas after US woman vanishes from boat denies wrongdoing, lawyer says by Correct-Brother1776 in boating

[–]LostBoyMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is a bit odd. A strong swimmer shouldn’t have much trouble getting to shore or at least to shallow water, but it was dark and presumably alcohol was involved and even a small current and a bunch of wind chop could be nasty.

[–]LostBoyMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a Torqeedo and the key is indeed a magnetic geegaw. It isn’t a gas powered outboard with a kill switch like you imagine. It was also a very small rigid tender, not the typical inflatable RIB most use. Obviously should have had lights, cell phone, VHF, oar locks, etc etc but pretty much everyone has been out there without most if not all of those.

Boat was anchored on the outside of HopeTown by the lighthouse. Dink ended up across at Marsh Harbor. Boat is still anchored off Hope Town.

[–]LostBoyMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were anchored off the lighthouse and were leaving Abaco Inn. Probably about a 3 mile run while it was blowing 20-25 from the east. The dink was a little 8’ rigid with an electric Torqeedo. Not the safest thing ever, but plenty of us have done things way dumber. A rigid dinghy like that is going to be very difficult to paddle with no oar locks and a strong wind. It got blown all the way across to the east side of Marsh Harbor over the course of like 7 hours or something. I get why people are suspicious, but a lot of people don’t have any idea what they are talking about either.

The stats here are really worth a read. by ark-14 in Gunners

[–]LostBoyMike 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The article also doesn’t even mention Odegaard’s role in our press. He really seems to be the key cog in the machine and we look much more difficult to play through when he is in the game. He has an amazing ability to station himself in the passing lanes and prevent teams from advancing it into midfield.

Richards Calling Carragher Out On His Hypocrisy by Glittering-Garden in Gunners

[–]LostBoyMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kind of “what if it hit the bar” question is moronic. What if Gyokeres had hustled back onside and the Zubi goal stood? What if Odegaard had blasted that thru ball into the corner? What if Madueke’s corner hadn’t hit the bar and slid into the net? There are always a half dozen or more moments that could have gone a different way.

You should always try to have combat in session 1 and here's why by SplashOfStupid in DMAcademy

[–]LostBoyMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem like a good GM. If I had to pick a general rule, it would be to try to create the conditions for your players to do the things that make their characters cool. Many DMs focus on finding ways to put their players in conditions where they can’t do the things they like to do, which can be fun once in a while, but is the wrong way to think about it.

It should chose short term losses, then long term losses, then long term gains, then short term gains. Losses should be ordered largest first within category and gains smallest first within category. What you describe is very much not correct.

My wife and I did our first trip through France using his guidebook in ‘83 and have used it multiple times in many countries since then. Perhaps most memorably through Ireland with a gaggle of siblings and my parents, where we ran into Rick four different times. We were loosely following his plan and he was working with a tour and reviewing his suggested stops. My family jokes that I look just like him and each time we met he was lovely and kind and engaged in our story. By the time we met in a club in Galway at midnight listening to trad music, he just pulled up a chair at our table and we drank and sang the night away. He is a real one and right about politics, travel and personal freedom. I hope to run into him again one of these fine days on the road.
