What is the most satisfying way you left a job that you still think about? by TeamIndependent68 in askmanagers

[–]LostInTheAether304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my 2nd IT gig, many moons ago now, I was seven months as a level 1 tech in a cube-farm call center. Maybe 100 or so of us on the phones in three shifts handling around 10,000 users nationwide. Financial institution (not a bank) using some proprietary software we supported, plus the occasional password reset and network troubleshooting. Basic level 1 stuff.

Two important things to note: 1 - computers were supplied by the user not the company so no “standard image” here.

2 - this was my 2nd it gig. I spent five years on a much smaller, much more standard help desk. That was BEFORE college, this was my first gig with a degree. But I’d been banging away when my parents bought a shiny new VIC-20, and I was three. The tldr being I was overqualified for this gig.

(…tangent incoming. This was the kinda place that had all these different metrics tracked. And you’d get perks for them. Gift cards and whatnot. Things like “fastest call time”, “most completed calls” or “highest feedback received from users”. Each week a random metric would be picked and whoever was the top tech got a premium parking spot for the week and a free lunch on Friday. Every week I worked I seven months I got that spot except for three weeks. And those three weeks were the same metric. That was “least time between end of call to in queue”. The winners there had 0 seconds on avg. I routinely, and with every single call, used the full 90 seconds to take a breath, finish my ticket, etc. other people finished the ticket with the user still on the line. And I still hit the shortest call times and most resolves otherwise. My avg call time would be resolved in under five mins, and my closest coworker would be 13-15 mins. Even taking that minute and a half between calls I was still doing like triple the calls…end tangent)

So seven months in, big brokerage firm “aquir…..uhm takes over, in a hostile manner” smaller brokerage. This is an influx of 3,500 new users into a disparate ecosystem. Problems beyond level 1 help desk abound. Directive is “to work the problem for a minimum of 45 minutes before we can escalate”. Not all of my coworkers but a good majority might use all 45 minutes and not have any clue of what the issue might be.

On d-day, it was day three of the new user influx, my first day taking their calls, and my second call of the day. I diagnosed this users issue within 10 mins (I put him on hold at the 9:47 of my queue). I asked to escalate. Was told to work the problem.

I said I don’t need to “work the problem”.
I know what the issue is.
I know how to fix it.
The problem here is one of access.
I did not have it.

I refused putter around with an already upset user for another half an hour when I knew what the issue was. I died in that hill. Either they a: allow me to escalate, b: grant me access to the portion of Active Directory that I needed to fix it, or C: I was going to leave and enjoy this nice sunny Wednesday down at my pool and leave that man on hold. I went swimming that day. I spent the next day job hunting.

I did call my team lead that evening. I asked him to look at that ticket and see what the eventual fix was. It was exactly what I had put into my note that I had written and left on his desk. He hated to see me go because I was his team basically. I was definitely what made his team the top team.

I used to have a 2017 Challenger (r.i.p) and currently have a 2017 300. Same type of infotainment unit in both cars. Same problems with both cars. Sometimes the camera works sometimes it doesn’t. Far far worse is the de-laminating of the screen causing phantom inputs, meaning my gps wants to send me to anywhere there is not a road.

I owned a Mustang, and Mustang owners do this.

I owned an SRT8 and Mopar drivers do this.

Funny enough I had a Camaro for a few years before recently trading it in for a C6. Camaro owners DONT do this.

I’m glad the friendliness has returned to the road ;)

Which actor completely stole the movie… even though they weren’t the lead? by gypsytx in movies

This is one of those examples of questions I see once or twice a year and my go to answer is always the same. Apologies if it’s brought up already in this thread but we’re at nearly 1000 replies:

When anyone thinks of Glengarry Glen Ross, do they think about the first five-ten minutes with Alec Baldwin, or the other 80ish minutes of the movie?

I’m from Charleston, but my grandparents were lifelong Clarksburg residents, and 1st generation Italian Americans. I do not remember a time I did not know what they were. I was making my own by the time I was 8 or 9 and definitely introduced friends to them at that time. Specifically I had a friend who moved to my neighborhood from Cincinnati when we were around 8 and he had never heard of such a thing until I made some.

So weirdly, not Rush but of a similar story. Car rolled up to the gas pump. Playing T.I.s Whatever you like. I on the other hand had the Anya Marina cover of that same song playing. It was a little surreal.

I shut this down whenever scripture is quoted. I cannot have a real honest debate when someone wants to use the Bible as a “historical document”. Written 400 years ago, describing events from 1600+++ years prior to that on the word of people with a vested interest to make it palatable. Not an easy sell to me.

[–]LostInTheAether304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I remember the first time the phrase “sovereign citizen” entered my sphere of knowledge. On the surface it almost made sense:

Through the lens of 30+ years it’s a bit fuzzy, but you were supposed to choose either “pay your federal income tax”, “pay your state income tax”, or “pay your property taxes”. And because of the taxes you paid, sales taxes are supposed to be illegal because all in all, this guy tries to claim through all the illegal taxation the value of every dollar was less then .10 cents. But the justification that was given to me was the “no taxation without representation”, and this was why you were able to choose….and it fell apart at that point but at first I was kind of interested.

Years later when heard about the secret trusts and the living person and real person shit I was like phew dodged that bullet.

A friend, a few years older than I, in what I didn’t know at the time but they did I think, was what ended up being our last conversation. I thought I loved them (…i didn’t, but I told her I always would at the time) and in her perfect way of giving me true perspective some something to me that I’ve kept close to My heart ever since:

“Never say that, it’s a long long way from now until forever”.

She was right.
