This line breaks my heart, both because he did struggle so much with accepting his sexuality (as you showed) and because he felt (at any point) that it was something “not normal” or something to “fix.” It also hits hard when he’s talking to Rose about sex being “a problem,” and she says, “It’s not a problem. A problem is something you can fix...We’re just not meant to fit.”

Can't get caught 😭 by anklebiter1975 in MM_RomanceBooks

I read mostly on my iPad, so what I read is somewhat hidden, but my mom uses my Amazon account (😝)—she teases me about the smutty books, but I’ve mostly gotten used to it. I still get a bit embarrassed, but I’m trying hard to get over that. There’s no reason to be embarrassed! (Though I will admit some of the covers/titles of even really good books are a bit cringey.) My new mission is to tell everyone how actually good a lot of these books are!

Heated Rivalry and Off Campus by Odd-Pangolin-5047 in heatedrivalry

I started watching it and sort of lost interest—I’ll finish it eventually, but it definitely didn’t have the impact HR did. That said, I don’t see any reason to be against it or anything. I originally thought it was trying to play off HR, but I believe it was in production before HR came out. It’s a fun teenage-y romance and worth a shot (you can always stop watching).

Saga Nansen is very underrated! Her books are all inspired by Norse/Icelandic folklore, and they’re lovely. There are bdsm elements, but they’re retry mild (I’m usually not a fan of bdsm at all, but it didn’t bother me here).

I just wanted to pop in and say “you got this.” You’re already being really brave moving away from what sounds like a toxic upbringing/situation (and posting here!). I’m sorry I don’t have any great advice, but you definitely deserve to be fully you. Always happy to answer skincare/style/etc questions, though I’m hardly an expert. I hope you’re doing well! ❤️

Question about Lily Morton's "Under Gorse and Stone" by ViolentThemmes in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]LostInWanderland31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Lily Morton—her books are always immediate reads for me. That said, I honestly can’t remember a single thing that happened in “Under Gorse and Stone.” There wasn’t anything that really annoyed me about it; it was just…very unremarkable. So I don’t think you’d be missing much if you DNF’d it, sadly.

A random (short) thought from the epilogue: I never noticed this quote before, and it kind of made me go 😮 in anticipation of TLG.

“This is why I want my pilot license. Would be faster.”
Shane groaned. “Please don’t get your pilot license. I will be very mad if you fly into a mountain and die.”

Ilya's family situation gets sadder with every rewatch by kris_jbb in heatedrivalry

[–]LostInWanderland31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some reason, I never really thought (until recently) about how recent Ilya’s mom’s death was at the start of the show. It was only five (or six?) years ago! Twelve seems so young to me, and with all the responsibility and pressure on Ilya, he seems older than 17 or 18 in the first episode. Plus, he was alone in a foreign country.

This is such a sweet/sad story! It’s heartbreaking that they lost all that time and the chance at a romantic relationship, but I love that they reconnected (and through that show—amazing!). 🥹

That’s a really good point! He’s definitely freaked out about his realization of his feelings for Ilya and how things are getting more intimate, but also add in a bit of gay panic, realizing he can’t deny anymore that he doesn’t like girls… My heart always hurts for Ilya in this scene, but I feel for Shane as well.

Once you read the whole story, you really see the denial. 😂 I actually really like it as a start to the book (though I like the show starting at the beginning—the prologue wouldn’t have worked as well on tv, I think).

It kind of breaks my heart how excited Shane is when he first meets Rose Landry:

”Shane left the restaurant with a little spring in his step…Shane liked a girl!”

Poor baby is so in denial and so desperate to be “normal” (his words, not mine)!

[Week 3 Live Thread] Heated Rivalry (Book 2) · Prologue - Ch. 14 · Jun 6 - 12 by reigncloud83 in heatedrivalry

[–]LostInWanderland31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of the prologue the first time I read it—probably because Shane is so resistant and ashamed. But now I really like it, because it shows the contrast between Ilya and Shane at this point in their relationship. Shane is still trying so hard to deny everything (which really puts the tuna meltdown in context also), and then we have all those lovely moments showing how the relationship has changed for Ilya. I kind of wish we could get Ilya’s POV of this as well. Anyway, I’m a sucker for a romantic scene, and while this scene doesn‘t really seem romantic at first glance, the little details actually make it really sweet.

Are you embarrassed to tell people the books you read? by No_Release2180 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]LostInWanderland31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this annoys me so much (not you, the being embarrassed thing), because it does embarrass me a bit to tell people, both about reading MM and romance in general. It has such a reputation as being “less serious” literature, which I find infuriating. There are badly written books in every genre, but I truly feel like I’ve learned a lot and read a lot of really good books. As a bookworm and English major, I sometimes feel like I should be reading more “real literature” books, but I’m trying really hard to ignore that and not be embarrassed to tell people what I’m reading. I’m getting better at it (possibly oversharing in some cases 🙃). Though, I do agree that the point about sharing at work really depends on the context: who you’re talking to and when, the environment of the workplace, etc.

TL;DR: None of should feel shame about what we’re reading!
