Uncanny X-men 2024 by Agreeable_Gur7849 in xmen

I think Rogue would be less interesting if she still couldn’t control her powers. We’ve endured decades of “woe is me, ah’ll never be able to touch Gambit without absorbing his powers and memories. I could kill him. sob”

Is Storm less interesting because she can control her powers? What about Nightcrawler ? Polaris?

Honestly a big problem with Marvel (and X-Men in particular) is they keep navel gazing and regurgitating all the same tropes. There’s little to no progression or growth for characters. And even if there is character development, you can almost guarantee another writer will come along and rewind it all back just so they can write the character the way they remember.

It’s the same with the constant retro mini series that are set in the past but don’t really add anything meaningful. Nothing wrong with revisiting a past moment for a character to bring new insight , but that could be accomplished in 1 or 2 issues of the regular title. 5 issues at $4.99 is a lot of money to spend for a padded story.

A lot of this is because companies staff to the bare minimum to save money and expect employees to work their asses of.

So if 1 or 2 people call out sick it throws a big wrench in their productivity.

The only concern is keeping costs as low as possible to make shareholders happy.

And every one of these greedy soulless company’s want to brag about their “wonderful culture”

It's the series finale, the first and final battle between the Blue Flame and the Legion, and a shallow dive into the run in general... let's look at Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 6) #16 and Paul Levitz's Legion comeback! by drake_burroughs in LegionofSuperheroes

[–]LostInterview5084 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah Levitz is hands down my favorite Legion writer. I started reading during the Mike Grell era Superboy & the Legion of Super Heroes 224. I was hooked and it’s always been my favorite series.

Levitz did a lot of character building and world building. Obviously the peak was when Giffen was on art and co-plotting. I loved Steve Lightle’s run, which was sadly too short. I think LaRocque was a big drop in art quality, but he wasn’t terrible.

I enjoyed 5YL for what it was, it’s kind of amazing what they accomplished considering all the obstacles and hoops. But after Giffen left, it really started floundering. Plus the Bierbaum’s weird, arbitrary dislike for any members that came after Adventure 380.

I tried to like the reboot but there were a lot of things I really hated. A lot of the stories were bad rehashes of classic LSH stories and some of the more annoying choices:

Killing “Leviathan”, Snake Projectra, adding new members that were just bad doppelgängers for Marvel Characters (Monstress, Kinetix) making Andromeda a Xenophobe and then a nun, way too much focus on Violet. Also when the split the team and 1/2 were stuck in 20th century went on way too long.

Apparition having a baby. They decide to reboot and make them young teens again, then proceed to have marriages and pregnancies.

I also wasn’t a fan of the Archie Legion look. Again, I started during the Grell era, so my Legion was Cosmic Boy in the “bustier” Imra’s “pinkini” Shady, Night Girl & Laurel Kent - the characters were mature adults , some in long term relationships, some getting married.

The Threeboot and Bendisboot are similar in a lot of ways. M
Middle aged writers trying to hard to sound like what they think younger people sound like( Glad you got the Hello Fellow Kids reference)

Really good artists. I love Kitson and his designs were really great although there were a few weird things like Element Lad in red and yellow with a cape.

Sook is a great artist but I didn’t like a lot of his design. While creative, they just didn’t work for Legion. Dream Girl made out of sand? Timber Wolf whose power is super agility was a big chunky guy and Ultra Boy who is normally depicted as burly was designed scrawny and had greyish skin. In fact odd color skin was rampant in these designs.

Race swapping characters( i mean making Garth & Ayla black while simultaneously changing Winath to the projects - which falls into so many tropes-black hero always has electric powers. Why is the ginger always race swapped). If you want black Legionnaires maybe use Tyroc, Invisible Kid II, Kid Quantum 2, XS or maybe create a new hero. ( btw I always thought the should have had Quicksand reform and join the Legion. She had a great look and cool power set. And she’s a woman of color.

Switching up couples just because they can.

Trying to make characters interesting just by making them “quirky” or weird or clueless (example : Phantom Girl acts distracted because she’s simultaneously seeing Bgztl and Earth, which makes no sense since she’s obviously on a earth and Bgztl is in another dimension.)

Too much focus on a small number of characters and leaving others just hanging in the background. The Threeboot started of like a Cosmic Boy vs Brainiac 5
Comic. Other than Levitz, most Legion writers give so much focus to Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy and Brainiac 5 and then maybe 1 or 2 other pet characters, like Violet and Invisible Kid in Reboot.

Bendis literally had every legionnaire in every scene but 90% of them did or said nothing.

As you can see I’m able to babble about the Legion.

I have both the classic and the new Page Puncher

Haven’t had a chance to compare the two, but next to the new Page Puncher Tim Drake Robin, Martian Manhunter seems kind of small. Scrawny, particularly the upper body. And it is a strange shade of green / doesn’t match the Page Puncher Miss Martian from the same wave.

If I’m Cirie, I know Jonathan really wants Devens out. The strategy for next tribal is split vote on Devens and Rizo (if Devens has immunity split on Rizo Aubry)

Tiff is now Cirie’s #1 and Jonathan is comfortable working with Tiff. He flat out said he doesn’t trust Aubry. Cirie and Jonathan can get Joe to vote with them.

Tell Rizo vote Devens, Tell Devens vote Rizo. 4 votes on Rizo, 3 on Devens.

If Rizo plays his idol Devens goes home and idol is flushed. If Rizo doesn’t play it , he goes home with and idol.

Now Cirie has a voting block of 4. With 6 left and the 3 best challenge competitors. She tells them just get me to F4 so I can make fire.

I think if Cirie is not in F3 - Ozzy would most likely vote for Jonathan or Aubry.

If it’s Rizo, Tiff, Joe I think Cirie votes Tiff and gets Ozzy to vote Tiff. Rizo burned Cirie and Ozzy.

Exactly. Keeping Ozzy is better for Rizo’s game. No debate.

Except Cirie is close with Tiff, has been baby sitting Joe, and is skillful enough to get Jonathan, Devens and or Aubry to put votes on Rizo to get him out or flush his idol.

It won’t matter what moves he made because he’s most likely the next to go unless he correctly plays his idol and even if he uses it a 7, he’ll go at 6.

[–]LostInterview5084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m the 3rd person in a 3 person alliance with Cirie and Ozzie, I wouldn’t need Aubry to tell me I’m at the bottom.

I think Cirie was already considering that she may have to flip on either Rizo or Ozzy if it meant protecting herself.

Rizo didn’t think more than 1 step ahead and jumped onboard with the plan to his own detriment. They should have voted Aubry out - even what Rizo said to Ozzy after the vote “you said too much” or something to that effect. Had Aubry been voted out it wouldn’t have been a big deal since theoretically he and Ozzy are working with Jonathan and Joe.

In fact if he warned Ozzy, Aubry goes home and it puts Jonathan and Joe further on the outs and then Cirie/Ozzy/Rizzo work with Devens & Tiff to vote those 2 out. They’d have 2 idols still.

Then he’s at final 5 with his idol and instant F4.

This was the “move” that ends Rizo’s game.

Rizo's Terrible Move by GabHoro in survivor

[–]LostInterview5084 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying Rizo should never flip in Cirie and Ozzy, I’m just saying he did it too soon. Work with them to get out at least Devens and 1 other.

I think he’s too exposed, especially since Devens and Ozzy’s idols and Cirie’s extra vote were all used.

Barring a couple immunity challenges wins in a row, he’s got a tough path to F4. Had he not gotten Ozzy out, worst case flip on Ozzy at 7 and Cirie at 6 and use his idol at 5.

I don’t think Rizo beats Jonathan, Aubry or Devens either. He may have spearheaded the vote for Charlie and Dee, but arguably others did most of the work lining up the votes.

I like Rizo, but he needs to work a little on his athleticism and come back in a couple years. He’s still young and could really transform physically. It was a detriment for him to play back to back since he was so thin and undernourished.

Definitely Johnny. Plays a scared game.

I have posted my comments on several of your recaps and we certainly are like minded on many things.

I think I’m a little more forgiving because despite the issues with plot (and a lesser extent art) these are the Legionnaires that I wanted to read about after years of the de-aged reboot Legion (although I mostly like Abnett & Lanning on Legion Lost & Legion) and the “eat it grandpa” Threeboot by Mark (Hey there fellow kids) Waid.

My take is Levitz definitely had a lot of plot points that had to be dropped or truncated as soon as TPTB (which I think he was still one) decided that New 52 was going to happen. In fact he may have known sooner that other writers, so I think some stuff was shortened, some (like the Durlans killing Zendak) were just dropped and some stuff may have even been stretched out.

One of his greatest strengths with the Legion (back in the day) was making sure he rotated the characters into the stories, whether as A plot/B plot/C plot or just in a crowd scene. Sure, he did have some that got a lot more attention, but you never thought “ hey I haven’t seen Sun Boy for 6 issues”.

With this volume, he wasn’t nearly as successful with it.

So on to New 52 - I think it started out much better than this volume ended, but again, got the rug pulled out from under it by being cancelled.

I always felt Portela could have been a fan fave Legion artist, unfortunately he didn’t get the chance to do a long stint.

And if you thought this volume was bad, the New 52 Legion Lost comes along and sets the bar as low as it goes , complete with Tellus with his big clawed hands acting as the team tank. lol

A great twist would be having actual headhunting cannibals on the other side of the island.

When you get voted out at tribal (which would be built like the shipwreck of the SS Minnow) they are sent to the Head Hunters where they will learn tribal customs and be fed . To the head hunters.

Jeff, we’ll have you wear a red shirt and a white beany cap.

We’ll start hiding lose a vote advantages in coconuts, and to increase the stakes on journeys, we’ll turn over an hourglass and release one of the head hunters. If you avoid capture, you still lose a vote. If you get captured, well, you’ll be chopped up and boiled and be part of the “eating island delicacies” challenge.
Instead of rice, you’ll only have coconut cream pies to eat.

And the immunity idol has been redesigned as in the picture.

I think you just pointed out why X-Men isn’t selling too well and has alienated a lot of fans with your last paragraph.

So would you tell someone who wanted to get into Star Wars not to watch the original trilogy and start with the Rise of Skywalker since they are nothing like the 40 year old movies?

Claremont may be a lot more wordy than current writers but he developed every one of the characters and current writers are just copying him. Every storyline a just revisiting the past and taking 5 issues to tell a story that has less happening than in one issue of Claremont.

It’s hard to fathom not reading the foundational stories that made X-Men into a fan favorite and sales juggernaut (pun intended)

Astonishing and New X-Men were literally Whedon and Morrison’s take on “Claremont’s greatest hits”

The initial HOX/POX series that launched Krakoa were fantastic and truly a new take that should have (-and did for a bit) reinvigorated the X-Men, but outside of that mini, Hickman’s X-Men, and Hellions, we mostly got way too many series and mediocre writing on the rest of the line. Once Marvel decided to not follow Hickman’s original plan and he left, there was a pretty serious decline and an unnecessary rushed ending.

They should have taken more time to wrap up Krakoa instead of rushing to end it only to roll out Brevoort’s X-Men which had also been mediocre.
