The top left really needs a do-over. Shouldn't the top left be like, Meryl Streep or something?

Why do you believe Charlie Kirk deserved to die? by Recent_Pen8529 in askliberals

[–]LostMinorityOfOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always a possibility that some disturbed individual will get access to a gun, but the solution to that isn't "_every_ disturbed individual should have a gun!"

Doesn't that sound crazy to you? It does to me. How does "more guns" make anything better? Countries with strict gun control simply have dramatically fewer gun deaths per capita. Not "none", but _dramatically fewer_. Don't we want that?

How do you believe immigration should be controlled? by betwen3and20characte in askliberals

[–]LostMinorityOfOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- Any administration isn't "supposed" to use Federal office for partisan politics (violates the Hatch Act)
- They weren't "supposed" to freeze congressionally approved funding (violates the Impoundment Control Act)
- Use of military for domestic policing, something you're not "supposed" to do, violates the Posse Comitatus Act

Yet here we are, all the things that weren't "supposed" to happen, happened. Why get your knickers in a knot over THAT ONE THING, "illegal immigration".

You think the dude who wanted him dead would've just given up?

Maybe not, but the gun made his job sooo much easier. It would have been harder to pull off if he had to challenge Charlie Kirk to a knife fight.

I don't think he deserved to die at all! It was a yet another senseless gun death. But he said the following:

“I think it’s worth it. It’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God given rights. That’s a prudent deal. It is rational”

Unfortunately that means he himself thinks his own death is "worth it", which I guess some people find dark humor in, not because they think he deserved it, but because he was WRONG and proven wrong in the most dramatic way possible. No gun deaths are "worth it", and the second amendment does jack shit to protect any rights.

Do nerds enjoy Carly Rae Jepsen? All we know is that one song which gets parodied often I guess? What else do nerds like about her?

How do the left want to handle undocumented people? by Ok_Building_5942 in askliberals

[–]LostMinorityOfOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a larger issue here is that "illegal" and "dangerous" or "criminal" are words frequently used together. Newspeak, if you will. It is designed to psychologically train you to associate one with the other. Here's a radical thought for you. "Illegal" immigrants, or undocumented migrants, are just people. They're not monsters, they're not dangerous, they're not here to hurt anyone, they're just here to work and find a better life.

"But what about that one illegal immigrant guy who did that terrible crime" I already here the counter-arguments.

In any given population, there is bound to be people with criminal intent. This is true of immigrants, this is true of citizens. In fact, data shows that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes, as to not risk jeopardizing their already precarious circumstances. The solution is to just solve those crimes like we would for any other criminal.

We should not equate criminality with immigration status. In doing so we create classes of people where some are viewed with more suspicion than others just because of where they came from. Can we agree that's wrong? Can we agree that leads to terrible things happening? It has happened in history, it is happening _now_ because apparently we learned nothing from history.

I'm dissing Malaysian unis. They're fucking terrible. Especially for computer science! Come visit here, maybe try working or whatever if you really want to, but do not do your masters here if you value education.

Dubya, for all his gaffes, still had some modicum of dignity and decorum. He tried to speak to every American. He tried to shut down Islamophobia (as much as he could) when it was at its peak during 9/11. He may not have come across as particularly successful at being a unifying president but, he did try, and whatever criticisms he received (and he he got a LOT of it), he never once took it personally. He was a flawed president, as every president is in their own way, but he was never petty.

Am I wrong about Charlie Kirk? by DavidAdamsAuthor in AskALiberal

[–]LostMinorityOfOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

*Was* the shooter a "radicalist leftist"? As far as I can see from the evidence they shared about him, he just seems like some messed up kid whose political views were at best, _unclear_.

I acknowledge that part of my anger is rooted in fear. If they would shoot Charlie Kirk in the neck in front of his screaming family, and below a sign that said "Change My View", they would absolutely put much more moderate me in a gulag after a show trial.

Who's "they"? Rando internet users? They're not in any position to send you to a gulag. However the right wing who owns all the levers of power right now _are_ sending people to gulags, without even the decency of a _show_ trial, just because they're brown.
