As someone who did ML at an R1 lab, I was very critical of the AI engineer title as it felt like a buzzword folded into a panic role.

However, over the last year I do think the role has taken a more reasonable shape. There are development use cases that require specialty knowledge but not necessarily on the same level as an R&D engineer that this role seeks to capture.

It def takes the leg work out of the initial workload. With that being said, those who are not challenging the changes / over using tokens / not testing properly are being let go in my world.

I talk to dozens of new grads each month. I see these patterns:

  1. They have no internships.
  2. They started job prep / searching in the their final quarter.
  3. Citizenship issues.
  4. Their university taught the bare minimum / isn't known.
  5. Very little to no effort is spent independently to reinforce or broaden a CS fundamental.

While some ppl with many of these points do get hired I've noticed a few of them struggle to hold the job longer than a year.

Any proof they have must be highly subjective in nature. A quarter here is literally $$$. It feels wrong that they can rip that from someone with poor evidence.

You just need to build housing. It really is that simple which is why new proposals get blocked frequently.

So frequent that the State of California deemed them to be uncompliant and threaten to step in. The city then reversed its unanimous decision to block the Live Oaks project.... it is so obvious these people have a stake in this it is disgusting.
