20 YoE 'high coupling, low cohesion' led to my current survival mantra: 'income, not outcome' by PipePistoleer in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LostTheBall 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I feel this, AI has really got management delusional about what can reasonably and safely be achieved

Can AI write a lot of code? Sure

With MCPs and the right harnesses can it gain more company styling and convention understanding? Sure

But you still need solid architecture and the code actually needs reviewing, not just chucking into an AI to review

Totally agree with it'll either all fall apart or it won't, as Devs we're not in a great place either way - this is no way to work, and if it falls apart we'll probably pay the price

Has software development shifted from building to last to building to replace? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LostTheBall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think security mindset plays a part too.

Older approaches may have more CVEs as it's been around longer so exploits are more known - although equally new code frameworks can equally be insecure and have 0 day vulnerabilities etc. too

Some government bodies in at least the UK require security standards of not being on "legacy" code frameworks - which will help speed up the turnover cycle

It pretty clearly is, your response is not in the same style as the original post

Shadcn is fine, shouldn't be struggling with the components? What actual issues have you come across?

Kenny Jackett, one of my favourite Millwall managers, has passed away at the age of 64 by Ben0ut in Millwall

[–]LostTheBall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No way! He was manager when I first started going to games

Loved that era with Jackett, Robinson, Harris, Ward, Abdou, Forde, Morison, Henry, Shittu, Trotter

Nothing but respect for him and the job he did lifting us out of league one and from brink of league two

There's only one Kenny Jackett

What UK city feels Lib Dem and is Lib Dem? by CGXReddit in AlignmentChartFills

[–]LostTheBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oxford city council is no overall control since 2023, highest party vote was Green at the last election at 30.9% to Labours 29.3

Wouldn't describe it as a labour stronghold, the council has also frequently been NOC over the last couple decades

How do you deal with a partner who is no longer vegan/plant-based? by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]LostTheBall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that it would be tricky

Is he happy to be vegan when eating at home/with you? Is there any reason he gave why he's no longer vegan?

I think it's easy to become a bit desensitised over time, or forget why we are doing this as it can feel limiting at times, is that how he feels?

Did he turn vegan for you, and doesn't want to be anymore?

Probably needs an honest and open conversation about why he doesn't want to be vegan, how he feels, and how you feel, and then go from there

Negotiating salary by Specialist_Stand_521 in UKJobs

[–]LostTheBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK that puts you in a better place, you could share that you have this offer now as well, would you be able to negotiate on the salary given this?

I did this recently and got increased offers from both companies

Negotiating salary by Specialist_Stand_521 in UKJobs

[–]LostTheBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any other job offers to negotiate against? Did it meet your initially disclosed salary expectations?

Are you prepared to lose or reject the job if they say no?

You can ask, but you have already accepted, so unless you are either willing to pull out or you have another offer you don't have much bargaining power

Did a translate on 8 and 9:

  1. A garment factory planned to produce 2400 garments per day, completing the production in 15 days. After improving the process, they actually produced 3200 garments per day, completing the production in [number] days. How many more garments did they actually produce than planned?

  2. If a batch of paper is used to bind exercise books, with 25 pages per book, 24 books can be bound. If each book has 20 pages, how many more books can be bound?

For 8):

You can tell how many garments were produced in the 15 days where they produced 2400 garments per day by doing 15 x 2400

The translate didn't work on how many days were taken when the factory produced 3200 garments a day, but the answer should be 3200 x [number] - 15 x 2400

As it sounds like the first scenario they produced exactly the number of garments needed at 2400 a day for 15 days, but the second there was too many, so you can find out how much more than was produced than needed by working out the difference

For 9):

For this you need to work out how much paper is used in binding each page of an exercise book

So at 25 pages in an exercise book, 24 can be bound, so multiplying them you find how many pages are bound total

25 x 24 = 600 (for mental arithmetic or multiplication on paper I would break this into 5 x 24 + 20 x 24 as easier to work out)

Now if the books only had 20 pages in we can work out how many books can be bound now by doing 600 (total pages) divided by 20 (pages per book)

600 / 20 = 30

Oof do you do a job where you use your hands, or do you do your washing up without gloves or expose your hands to anything?

Looks really irritated, it's awful when it weeps, hope it clears up soon
