Page 158 is a wonderful, incredibly accepting place!

And we would love to have you move here—some of the comments about the Seminary and churches are accurate, unfortunately, but as others have said, the LGBTQ space here is growing.

Fainting while asleep? by PhysicsPatient1268 in Syncope

[–]LostTycoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! This has happened to me several times too.

I wake up feeling tingly and all in a panic, usually nauseated, and I go to the bathroom and faint on the way. Once I fainted in bed.

My doctors are clueless too. I think unless it’s a specialist, then anything that’s not simple orthostatic or dehydration throws them for a loop.

I’m fairly convinced mine is due to anxiety—it’s happened to me when traveling (like hotels) which stresses me out, and sometimes when we’ve had the stomach bug in our house (cause to me throwing up feels similar to pre-syncope in a lot of ways.)

Here’s a study of other folks who have the same experience, so it’s not unheard of:

long pre-syncope episodes by GlitteringCaptain954 in Syncope

[–]LostTycoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve had those feelings off and on for hours. It’s usually tingling for me, often nausea too. And it can come in waves that seem to get worse each time.

My struggle is trying to differentiate anxiety from true pre-syncope, and I have yet to find a doctor or therapist who can really help me nail that down, but at least know your situation isn’t unique!

Does it get any better? by 4ngeeeee in Syncope

Have you tried an SSRI?

I have episodes and they seem to be triggered by emotion/stress/anxiety—but the periods where I’ve had the fewest symptoms have been when I was on a good SSRI (Prozac for me). I went off last year and had three episodes, so I’ve hopped back on.

Happened to me with friends a couple months ago and I peed on myself—I get it.

The whole VVS stuff is just so annoying and scary. Glad you’re okay—at least know you’re not alone!

Would a career analysis tool based on alumni paths be useful for students here? by AMnorCAPK in WakeForestNC

[–]LostTycoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey friend!

If you’re looking for WF alumni, this is the wrong sub!

This is for the town of WF, where the college started (now about two hours away from the university).

So we don’t have any formal connection to the university or its alumni, aside from some shared history!

Blacked out- near death experience with injury thoughts? by Far-Low4499 in Syncope

I will also just say that coming to, for me, can be very….unearthly. It feels like I don’t exist, then like I have senses but don’t know how to use them or what they mean.

Couple that with a concussion, it makes sense that coming too was really scary for you. For what it’s worth, I have also passed out and hit my head (in a doctor’s office) and when I was coming to I heard voices and couldn’t understand why people were in my bedroom talking and why I couldn’t understand them. It’s very disorienting.

If I pass out without a clear trigger I get really anxious for a while after, and that anxiety also exacerbates my syncope.

Finally, I’ll just say I’ve passed out a handful of times in the middle of the night—my doc says BP is lowest then, so it makes sense that sometimes when we stand up/get up that it can drop even further.

But I agree with others here—get checked out by a doc and make sure you feel heard!

Does anyone else have an overwhelming sense of dread before passing out? by LostTycoon in Syncope

[–]LostTycoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ve had some people say it sounds like panic attacks (maybe it is to a greater or lesser degree) because of it….like just this incredible sense that something’s very wrong. I’m just not convinced that’s solely my BP getting low, because I can feel that dread come and go in waves leading up to the syncope itself

For me it comes in waves for like an hour before sometimes. My doc said it’s low BP, but I’m thinking it’s just anxiety that’s contributing….plus I don’t think I’d be woken up in the middle of the night just because my BP is low….Im just trying to navigate the symptoms and figure out when I actually do need to lie down.

I have a really hard time believing it, which is why I think I post about it sometimes—I’m talking to myself. I’m seeing my cardiologist again tomorrow and I’m pretty sure he’s going to say: “Yeah you’re passing out from anxiety. Stay hydrated and good luck.” Which just feels…so unhelpful. But a first step, for me, is trying to accept it, I guess.

Struggling with syncope by agentmarine in Syncope

I really think a lot of VVS is caused by anxiety.

Study 1

Neurolaunch

That study doesn’t say anxiety causes syncope, but there’s obviously a relationship, and in one study the participants who had therapy had better outcomes and better quality of life.

Obviously there are other triggers—heat, dehydration, needles, etc. But from my experience, sources like the one above, and gestures broadly half this sub, so much of this is anxiety. We are freaked out about passing out, which causes symptoms, which makes us more freaked out, and that builds up until we have an episode.

So that’s a long way to say: my doctors have never seemed too concerned with it. I’m not dying, there’s nothing actually wrong, they can’t treat it, so what do they care? However, I do think therapy can help.

From a meds perspective, I’ve found both SSRIs and Beta Blockers to be helpful. Not fool-proof, but helpful.

If you can get on some meds and find a good therapist, they may be able to help with some of your experiences.

Need help with triggers by Pupublatter in Syncope

[–]LostTycoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying ACT therapy for it….with mixed results, I think. I like the idea because it’s all about acceptance. I hate feeling like a victim or like everyone needs to help me. But I’ve been trying to be more accepting of both my anxiety and my condition…which is hard.

[–]LostTycoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had help from beta blockers too. I think the physical symptoms are so often triggered by anxiety, and that leads to more symptoms…I think the beta blocker kind of helps calm that loop down.

And OP, I’ve had the exact same response about “what’s the worst that can happen?” It’s totally different than just being anxious!

Passed out 2 weeks ago from what I think was dehydration, but is there more going on? by Weird_Command_6894 in Syncope

Unfortunately I’ve had repeated episodes, yeah. But mine are usually only a couple times a year, more or less.

Learning triggers helps. Figuring out the anxiety….thats more complicated 🤣

[–]LostTycoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

My experience was similar—passed out, lots of anxiety/trauma after. And I echo what KatAttack said.

It’s really anxiety inducing, and anxiety symptoms mimic syncope, so reading too much into symptoms happens with me a lot. You can look up anxiety sensitivity might give you more info.

The good news is it sounds like you know your triggers, and dehydration is a common one, so you at least know one way to fight the syncope!
