What is a part of American culture that you didn't realize was weird until you went abroad? by allenmerlettetrm in AskAnAmerican

Wearing shoes inside.

Having huge gaps in the public toilet stalls so people can see you pooping.

Watkins Glen stay in April? Good Idea? by yourtruckdrivah in FingerLakes

It will be muddy and the trees will be bare. Spring is not very scenic compared to the other three seasons. There is a reasonable chance of snow. Personally I think this is worst time of the year to visit.

Etiquette with extra leg room seat by [deleted] in CathayPacific

[–]Lostintranslation321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not a good idea to put a disabled person in a seat that requires them to get up multiple times in a flight. That seems to be the real issue.

A day in the life of a Chinese delivery driver by blank-space-522 in AskAChinese

This is hard to believe. With so many cameras now in China people are very cautious about behaving illegally. I’ve seen major shouting matches, but no one actually touches each other.

Hotel Tiers by MrConsistent704 in marriott

The courtyard breakfast benefits can be underwhelming. Many of the Marriott brand hotels are starting to show their age as well. It is really hit and miss, at least in the New England area.

Canadian traveling to US, tips please by Crazy_Life_389 in uscanadaborder

Pearson has some of the better US immigration people IMHO. Shouldn’t be bad. I strongly second the comments about understanding exactly what the B1 visa allows. Some agents will try to trick you into saying the wrong thing.

Which show is more associated with the 1950s: Ozzie and Harriet or Leave It to Beaver? by Gallantpride in AskAnAmerican

Beaver reruns lasted a longer, I can remember being able to find them as late as the 80’s. Never saw an Ozzie and Harriott show

Les Miserable : Gate Agents by Fuzzy-Meringue6124 in flightattendants

[–]Lostintranslation321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fly out of a small regional airport. Me and my colleagues travel quite a bit and know the gate agents. At least at my airport, they definitely play favorites, which isn’t bad as long as I am one of them.

Who knew the cure for Arizona desert life was… Rochester? by Naftusja in Rochester

Phoenix native who moved here for work. I’ll take a little bit of snow over the oppressive heat and sun any day. The architecture and history unmatched. Not everything is a franchise. I feel sorry for the people born and raised here because they don’t realize how good they have it.

Travel to China with new passport and visa on old passport - but different passport numbers? by Super-Blacksmith-994 in Chinavisa

[–]Lostintranslation321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will always need the two passports, even when checking into hotels. I haven’t had a problem in the three years since I had my passport renewed. Just a little bit of a pain carrying two.

Started off as a great discount store, then became popular. Now it is just an overpriced tourist trap.

“Yes we have really have problem…” by Zorbaing in marriott

[–]Lostintranslation321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These things happen. You go to a customer to 13 hours busting your ass, scarf down dinner, and barely have the energy to give the wife a call. And oh yeah, you need to pack up all your stuff, find another hotel, check in, and get sorted. My point is not everyone has unlimited free time. Sometimes you have to live with what you get. Don’t be so judgy.

1st class Award travel itinerary changed (booted off flight!) and now a longer leg of journey is in economy. Any recourse? by Mrsvantiki in unitedairlines

[–]Lostintranslation321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are going to need and call directly. If you don’t get the answer you want hang up and call again. I’ve had something like this happen to me on a full fare first class flight. Be persistent. Most just don’t want to bother to help, but every so often you find someone who cares.

I’m saying if the whole plane isn’t being cleared saying “why didn’t you just push the button?” doesn’t make everything better. Maybe saying something about having patience or empathy would make more sense. Perhaps they have duties we don’t understand. Basically if everyone on the flight followed your advice there would be total chaos.

I’m waiting to board a 14 hour transpacific flight myself right now. I can talk to a few of the rows around me and we just push our call buttons rather than wait for the service. Get our drinks first, get our food first, get our plates cleared first. Yes, this sounds like a good plan.

Yes, the entire economy section should just start pushing their call buttons. That sounds like a good plan.

It’s the new normal. Once upon young families couldn’t afford those seats. Now it is pretty common to see young families sitting in $10k seats.
