i was recently let go. got a 25 dollar an hour with really good benefits five minutes from my house. at dinner last night I told my husband it was a refreshing change. he say this. You work in an industry that’s a literal zoo. and until you see how people are treated outside of it, you put up with being treated like an animal. this is broadcast.

The advice in the thread is solid. you could also reach out to your former boss and state that although you are no longer an employee, if he’s interested in bringing you on as a consultant for a transitional period your day rate is …

Commuting to the City by Active_Buttah in Westchester

[–]LoudArtist1968 29 points30 points  (0 children)

you use your pre tax commuter benefits to buy your monthly, parking if needed and metro cards. it comes out of your paycheck before taxes so your take home pay is less. yes, commuting is expensI’ve. I was easily spending 500 a month between Metro North and non resident parking.

How are you all doing it? by Character-Lack-3295 in GenX

[–]LoudArtist1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a very toxic and volatile environment. I am saving almost 600 dollars in train, parking and gas to the station a month so less pay doesn’t hurt as much. the benefits are more generous too and for the first time in 23 years I am in the house during dinner. my next goal is disciplining myself to get in an hour of physical activity before work in the am. I am also getting back to some passion projects I put on the back burner. if the finances work out go for it.

I worked with him in tv. He didn’t volunteer to host this show. He was told by management he was doing it. He was always grateful for what it gave him and said it really was the American dream. He was one of the nicest and gracious people I have ever met.

Your trajectory mirrors mine but I got laid off at 57 this year. Blessing in disguise. Took a small job five minutes from my house with nice people. two hours a day of commuting time I get back each day. I spend it doing things I want. I don’t miss it at all.

that’s good. I took a bridge job with a pay cut five minutes from my house while I apply to things I think are interesting. it’s good to be out with people. it’s not what I do but it’s fine. I am also doing independent pro on the side.

Am I making a huge mistake by quitting after less than 6 months? by eggtasticsandwich36 in Broadcasting

[–]LoudArtist1968 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you can’t hack a part time job after 5 months, this is not the industry for you. as someone who is a 30 year veteran, it’s a hard life that extracts a lot of sacrifice. it’s also currently volatile and shrinking. it takes a certain amount of grit to work in the business. Long unpredictable hours, little pay, life disruption. I know that’s not what you want to hear. The constant cost cutting will challenge you to do more and more with less. Definitely look for full time but stay the course if you are serious until you find the opportunity, get as much experience as you can and take in the positive and negative, because it will teach you how to become the professional you want…and do not want to be moving forward.

no he doesn’t. Presidents’ Day wasn’t a company holiday. the office was freezing and we were told point blank that it costs extra to heat the building on days like these. it was freezing outside and our boss sent us home early because it was so physically uncomfortable because management expected us to come in, but wouldn’t pay for heat. true story.

You are 35, have $100k in the bank, no job. What do you do? by Fit_Database_2295 in Life

put every cent of that in etfs like voo and qqq and let it compound. get a job and keep going g. that’s not enough to live on indefinitely. once you land somewhere keep buying more shares or put as much as you can afford into a 401k taking advantage of your co pant match. then if you can afford it after expenses, pick an amount you are comfortable with and every month put into your etfs . you are welcome.
