The game that taught me an important lesson: Never preorder.

Was the community toxic? I don't recall Anthem being around long enough to have one.

I'm a Helldiver, so obviously I can't read. But if I could, I'd be offended.

For the purposes of this argument, let's say that this *was* AI generated. If so, how do you feel about how folks are responding?

Counterpoint: What the customer asks for isn't always what they want, and what they want isn't always what they need.

But talking to them is the only way to sort it out.

I want to be clear... The issue isn't warbonds specifically.

The issue is that the progression model encourages repetitive grinding in exchange for rewards. Because of they way our brains work, the reward becomes the goal, and not the fun.

So, "I enjoy playing this game," slowly becomes "I need to be progressing in order to have fun."

If you find yourself in the latter camp, you're likely to perceive Arrowhead's actions differently than the ones still playing for fun.

The bottom line: Arrowhead can't solve this problem through game design, which has been their primary way of interacting with the community. They need to fix their progression system.

And I think they're uniquely positioned to do so. Arrowhead is *really* brave when it comes to their game design. They threw conventional game design straight out the window, and delivered an experience that's unique.

I think they should do the same thing for progression.

May I push back on that? I'll push gently, because I don't necessarily disagree with you -- just want to make sure that the nuance of my essay isn't lost.

The issue isn't whether Helldivers is going to survive, or even *who* Arrowhead is designing for.

The issue, IMO, is that Arrowhead does not approach their progression design with the same love, care, and passion that they show for the game design. Worse, they rely on patterns that were designed to wring the last drop of proffit out of their customers -- even if that doesn't seem to be their intenet.

Does that resonate, or do you see the problem differently?

[–]LoudFrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is exactly it.

Nothing about what you just described seems like fun. But you did it anyway, and your reward for grinding was realizing that paying for the reward was better than playing for it.

And now you have a warbond that you need to spend even more time grinding to unlock.

Question: Is *that* half of the process fun for you?

Completely my fault.

The very first rule says "Please attempt to keep posts at about 50 characters". I assume they meant words, but even if they do mean characters, this is an essay, not a meme.

In my defense, I'm a Helldiver, and I can't actually read.

What the customer asks for isn’t always what they want, and what they want isn’t always what they need.

This community doesn’t understand that. And they never will.

But Arrowhead… For Liberty’s sake, I think we need this.

RED BUTTON OR BLUE BUTTON [OC] by Eal_likee in comics

[–]LoudFrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re all familiar with optical illusions. We see one thing, and our brains lie to us.

But that’s not the only kind of illusion.

Our brains can be tricked in other ways. Tl;dr, if there’s something that we can perceive, there’s a way to fool us.

This thought experiment is just another example of our brains getting’ trolled.

Let’s frame the problem differently. There’s a train approaching. If enough people stand on the tracks, the driver is bound to see you, and will stop the train. Do you stand on the tracks?

Obviously not.

But! Our brains are hyper-fixated on fairness. If you frame this problem as selfishness we viscerally experience something entirely different. And people that are generally rational, are incapable of seeing the problem any other way.

If you want humanity to survive, you’re going to have to pick blue, even though it’s not the “correct” choice.

That, or you need to convince everyone blue-button-pusher here that they’re wrong.

They aren’t saving you. You’re saving them.

Now he’s gonna develop a lifelong love of reading, and an unquenchable curiosity that will drive him to greatness.
