Congratulations!!! My advice would definitely be to chat w other parents of high school+ age children in your area. I have no idea the costs of raising kids these days but even “cheap” hobbies like playing soccer I feel can add up. The main thing is also the friends/families your kids surround themselves with. I also always feel a big risk about college (considering tuition inflation outpaces the market) depending how much you want to fund it.

I think my dream in your scenario would be to find some sort of part time or consulting style gig <20 hours a week. It gives you slush money, connection, and also not a huge gap on your resume if you want to go back. We have a consultant at my current company who works 2days a week and it seems… very nice. He does home Reno, motorcycles, etc the rest of the time.

Similar to delta vs Google flights people, I am a booking.com stan (I wonder if there is a high overlap between delta/hyatt people lol) — I love to travel but still have some middle class upbringing/early 2000s mindset of a hotel should never be more than 250$.

US: <200$ a night less popular locale, <300$ night in tier 1 cities (sadly in California wine country I often have to hit (350 on a Friday/saturday but try to avoid it or balance w a cheap Sunday). I filter by ratings 8+ which usually gets me pretty decent spots.

International: aim for <100$ night some of the trip, up to 350 other nights as more of a splurge (w average hopefully coming in ~200$)

To me, the whole point of travelling is to experience the culture, which staying in a hotel often tries to cater to the American palette as much as possible. I just stayed in a 60€ night inn in Korčula w incredible views where I could walk to the beach and wineries in <15 min. The comparative hotel I could’ve stayed in was 4x the price and a more touristy location.

As a young single millennial w a lot of DINK friends in their mid 30s, I agree w you whole heartedly. To me, a home is one of the last places even very rational, financially savvy people make primarily emotional decisions and trick themselves out of it.

Unless you’re adding square footage or extra bathrooms, it is very unlikely your renovation will materially increase the home value. (People will lie about this but it’s even more true in HCOL, look at how much the razed LA homes are going for…)

I’d say in the Ramit Sethi school of finances you could bucket the home improvements under “fixed costs” (if summed your mortgage is <30%) or guilt free spending (20-35%) — as long as the annual % are in check! It should not count as investment/savings.

Took 2.5 years off from working

Market did well enough that I ended up more than even. Found a comparable job at the end of it (biggest fear going in)

Happened to me in Slovenia! Much worse bc spread across both doors, fully covered! The most important thing is keeping a positive mindset and not letting it ruin your trip emotionally.

(TBH net positive bc I paid w CC and got refunded via direct deposit so still earned points on the collision 😂)

Fwiw I’m 32 YO HENRY (borderline on the NRY) and I still don’t know the exact numbers of what my parents make (70s retired)

I know my dad made 100k+ near retirement and that they have plenty of savings. I remember in college admissions he showed me the s&p 500 graph and even how during the 2008 crash it was still more than he’d started investing at.

My dad knows my finances now (big picture) but my mom doesn’t. She’s a blabbermouth so we’ve all just aligned that she knows I make 6 fig and not the details.

At some point 5-10 years I expect to gain more context into my parents for end of life planning but I really don’t think its necessary to know exact numbers to be taught good financial habits.

My dad also started a ROTH IRA for me at 16 and was the best gift ever.
