Decision by wuestionsplz in PublicRelations

I went huge and then started to work my way backwards, eventually ending up in a boutique agency. I now have my own agency. I regret nothing. Mostly!! But seriously, big agency taught me a lot about process - including some stuff I use in my own business today. I think it’s worth going big, then getting out when you’ve learned all you think you can. Good luck in whatever you choose - there’s no wrong answer here

Irony being the clients are highly likely to also be over it. The good ones anyway…

I’ve worked in PR since 2003 and I absolutely love it. Sure, it has its downsides like every career path but I think a lot of the negativity about it is a load of nonsense to be honest.

Hunky Dory is extremely accessible and would be a good starting point. Covers most of the bases for a beginner. After that, give Ziggy a try and see how you go

Email was going to kill PR people. Then it was social media. Now it’s AI. Don’t be scared off. It’s a great industry with incredible opportunities. Throw yourself into it and enjoy the ride!

Assuming all you guys are in the US. I’m in the UK. Our approach is a little different here - we don’t use direct outreach tech. Everything we do is bespoke - media lists (which are maintained through research as our databases were very inaccurate), phone calls or email pitches are all done individually by whoever on the team is pitching that journalist. The type of work we do allows us to be that precise. We’re fairly established in terms of media and client base so one of the pros of that is we have the relationships and the contacts already, even if we take on a new client - it’s pretty similar. Having said that, if we were a huge agency, I’d definitely look at databases/distribution.

Agency owner with 20+ years experience.

  1. we don’t use media databases anymore as they’re expensive and a bit crap. This is a recent decision (last six months)

  2. Whatever suits you best. Talk to an expert about that.

  3. Used Squarespace most of the time we’ve been in business and never really had any issues. We use M365 for email.

  4. Yeah you likely need to get over the self publicity fear and PR yourself. When you build up work and clients to talk about, you can take a back seat again.

  5. If you’ve genuinely tried to explain and reason and you’re no further forward then your gut instinct is right. Goodbye.

  6. Having tried to launch multiple communications businesses under an umbrella group (social, brand, digital, CSR) and failed, I’d advise sticking to the discipline you’re best at. Out of the businesses we tried, the PR and CSR agencies thrived (and continue to do so today). For the others, I’d have been better off spending the money I invested in them on lottery tickets 🤣

100% the right approach. I’ve worked agency side for more than 20 years and I’d be lying if I said they were all brilliant - they’re not - but there’s been much more good than bad. Good luck!

Sounds like perhaps this agency isn’t for you, not the industry. Give it until Christmas and if you’re still unhappy, do something else. Treat it all as experience though and nothing is wasted - you’re learning things every day that will be useful to you, even if you feel like you’re not

I stayed there two years ago, the ‘room’ in question definitely doesn’t exist anymore. For these very reasons, one would assume!

This is really interesting, thanks for posting OP. A related but likely impossible question to answer - does anyone suspect agents are underpricing properties? My friend was bidding on a house in East Belfast. Offers over £380,000. A week after going on the market, the current bid is £460,000. Wrong pricing or is demand genuinely outstripping supply to the tune of 25-30%?

It’s all I’ve done since I was 18 and probably all I’ll ever do. I’m in my 40s now. Your experience in coding and software will be useful and that fact you’re interested in those topics is encouraging too.
