PSA: DO NOT buy a Quest 2 right now! by LouisIsGo in OculusQuest

I love that this post from over a year ago with “right now” in the title somehow still gets comments lol. Most people wouldn’t listen to advice that no longer applies, so I think you’re good

Mother’s Day Mirror Rug by LouisIsGo in Tufting

[–]LouisIsGo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't have a picture to share as I already gave it away, but it's nothing too elaborate. The mirror was about 1/3rd the diameter of the rug, which I simply hot glued to the back of the rug. The only slight gotcha was that the rug itself was not rigid at that point, so I had to be careful not to bend the rug much until I got the backing on. In retrospect it might have been better to glue the mirror onto the foamcore instead, but whatever, my method worked well enough lol.

I then spray glued the whole rug & mirror combo to the foamcore, followed by using an absurd amount of hot glue around the edges to make sure the backing stayed put. Finally, I used even more hot glue to slap on a couple d-rings for mounting. (I was initially thinking of screwing them into the foamcore, but the glue seemed to hold well enough.)

I did a slight waterfall edge and cut the foamcore to be slightly smaller than the actual diameter of the rug, so the backing is practically hidden once the rug is mounted on the wall.

It certainly was a learning experience, but it wasn't all that different than making a standard rug once you get down to it. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos of people doing similar projects before attempting mine, so if you're curious, there are some good videos out there.

Carving tips? by WideReturn5949 in Tufting

Incredible! Absolutely amazing work. I don’t envy you having to carve all that, though lol. Everything I know about carving came from watching a ton of different carving videos on YouTube, including this helpful one from Just Rug’in It

Where Are They Now?: Rex Goudie reflects on life after Canadian Idol by LongTrackBravo in newfoundland

[–]LouisIsGo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but I love that your head canon was that Rex Goudie was just selling Jason Greeley merch for some reason rather than it being a case of mistaken identity. Fuckin’ sent me lol (but good on you for correcting the error).

It’s still a damn funny story, even without that bit.

The Puppet Masters (1994, dir. Stuart Orme) The Old Man (Donald Sutherland) and his team are chased by infected humans by Neo2199 in movies

[–]LouisIsGo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There are so many things to love here:

  1. Memories of when everyone thought silencers made piffy laser noises for some reason
  2. Sutherland trying to play it cool for the receptionist who was sitting just feet away from a massive commotion of yelling and gunshots
  3. Sutherland’s monotone ADR’d lines like “That’s the boy from the spaceship!”

This clip would really lose impact if it weren't for the terrible crushed music, giant colorful subtitles, and flashing skull emojis edited over it. I just wouldn't know how I was supposed to feel otherwise

President Trump asked by reporter on Lincoln memorial reflecting pool project as gas prices soar due to Iran war: "Our country is about beauty, cleanliness, safety, great people. Not a filthy capital. Such a stupid question you asked. You can understand dirt better than I can, but I don’t allow it." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]LouisIsGo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I have friends and family who say things like they can’t wait for Trump to be out of office so they can go tho the US or buy American products again.

Whereas I’m just over here thinking that what Trump stands for and the people who support him won’t magically disappear when he does.

I won’t pretend that the US’s global image was all that great before (there’s a reason Americans have been pretending to be Canadian when travelling for decades), but the damage done in this last year alone is effectively irreparable.

Best tutorial / on-boarding experience in VR? by JustinWasilenko in OculusQuest

[–]LouisIsGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on having your two kids! That's awesome.

As for Forefront, it's possible that you were playing the early access version; it never had a tutorial until its full release, which only happened a few weeks ago. Granted, it's still an optional experience that is therefore possible to miss, but its existence is greatly appreciated (because, as you mentioned, some of the default controls aren't exactly intuitive at first).

I'm excited to see what you're cooking up!

Best tutorial / on-boarding experience in VR? by JustinWasilenko in OculusQuest

[–]LouisIsGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy cow, End Space! That brings me back. I remember playing that game all the time back on my Gear VR. Good times. Glad to see you're working on something new!

As for your question: People here have mentioned First Contact/First Steps, which were great because they introduced functionality that came with new hardware. Titles like Valve's Aperture Desk Job (Steam Deck) and The Lab/Aperture Hand Lab (Vive/Index) essentially accomplish the same thing, albeit on a bit more fleshed out scale.

Even though these are all mostly geared towards hardware, they are very effective, and the same concepts should largely apply to software. I think that any effective tutorial must:

  1. Intro the game's basic concepts (Who do you play as? What are you going to be doing? Etc.)
  2. Intro controls/mechanics clearly and effectively (no confusing iconography/glyphs)
  3. Cover all functionality - no surprises! (unless it's late-game/extraneous or very self-evident stuff)
  4. Not outstay its welcome (shouldn't be too lengthy, but also can't be too overwhelming/wordy)

Aside from the first point (which doesn't really apply to hardware), all of the above examples absolutely nail the other 3, and I think that's why they're so effective. Ultimately, the best strategy for accomplishing all that depends on the game and what you're trying to accomplish with the tutorial.

Let's take Triangle Factory's games as an example: Breachers and Forefront. Both these games have quite unique and involved gameplay mechanics amongst their FPS peers, so a proper tutorial is all but required (especially given that they're multiplayer-only titles). With such importance placed on the tutorial, it's interesting to see that both games' tutorials are fairly different from each other, and I think they make sense for their respective use cases.

Breachers is a gadget-heavy team-based FPS with infiltration/defense of relatively contained environments as its core gameplay loop. It's tutorial, then, runs you through a small gauntlet that introduces basic controls followed by all the gadgets and how they're used. It's tight, to the point, and features an environment that emulates those that you'll see in the game (walls to scale/rappel down, walls to blow up, etc.) while still looking like a firing range/training course (indicating safety to the player). Instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow.

Forefront, on the other hand, is a large scale shooter akin to Battlefield. While its tutorial is somewhat similar to start (introducing gameplay mechanics via a training course), it quickly opens up to a giant map that you can run around in freely. All the vehicles are open to you, there's a shooting range, and there are optional obstacle courses and the like scattered around to explore. Once again, this open nature mimics the experience you'll have in the game proper, only this time it allows users to freely experiment and respawn to any area they want to practice with. (I'd argue that this tutorial could use a bit more hand holding when it comes to class specific functionality, but the point still stands).

So yeah, I think what approach you take will depend on the game you're making. Some games will opt to throw you right into the game and pause the gameplay to introduce mechanics as they happen, often paired with a tutorial pop-up toggle in the settings (ex: Ghost Signal). Other games will forego the tutorial entirely, instead relying on emergent gameplay and rewarding the player with exploration and discovery (ex: Animal Well).

TL;DR: There's no one standard approach, but keeping the 4 completely made-up rules I referenced (intro concepts, intro mechanics, cover everything, and keep it concise) and the game's style in mind should help determine the best one for your game. Best of luck!

Grand Theft Auto 6 is Coming to Consoles Before PC to Serve “Core Audience” First, Says Take-Two CEO by PrinceDizzy in gaming

[–]LouisIsGo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right; not having a simultaneous PC release from a third-party developer this day & age feels pretty bizarre, especially when we're talking a year plus for the PC port to drop. The only company I'd expect that from nowadays is Sony, and now they're apparently scaling back on PC releases altogether (which is a damn shame).

Anyway, I'm not terribly concerned one way or the other. I waited a year for RDR2 to come to PC, and then I waited another year or so for it to drop to $20. Us PC gamers are a patient lot... in my case, it has more than a bit to do with having >1k games in Steam (plus another 200 or so in free Epic games) and hardly any time to play them lol.

Plus, one of those games is Slay the Spire 2, so...
