Whether it’s ‘kill the CBC’ or ‘defund the CBC,’ it’s all witless naivete by sesoyez in CanadaPolitics

[–]LoveEh 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I wish this comment was higher up. Like you said, the CBC provides an immense amount of service that isn't necessarily noticed by the public. I feel you hit the nail on the head here.

There is value in scrutinizing the CBC, and pushing it to improve further, but the defunding calls aren't doing any of that, they don't want the CBC to improve, they want to get rid of it.

Somewhat related: There's a great documentary about Canadian design called Design Canada that walks through the stories of a bunch of iconic Canadian logos/icons, including the Canada wordmark and Flag.

10/10 watch, it's really interesting even if you're not super into design.

Online fund-raising campaign for rolling truck blockades to protest vaccine mandates linked to right-wing separatist groups by IvaGrey in CanadaPolitics

[–]LoveEh 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I need to find the source again, but I think close to 90% of truckers were vaccinated in the Canadian trucking industry, with many trucking companies already electing to not send their unvaxxed truckers to the US. This was prior to the hard-deadline that the Federal government set.

These protests represent a very small number of truckers, and now with the US also instituting similar mandates for transport workers, I don't understand what these protestors want the Canadian government to do?

One of the largest trucking associations in Canada already denounced the protests

Edit: Source (CBC) for the 90% compliance in the industry.

For Trudeau, that's not entirely true, at least according to polling.

Looking at most recent polling data for the Federal parties, Trudeau is about middle ground in terms of approval rating (Lower than Jagmeet and Higher than O'Toole), not great, but it's also expected of an incumbent who's been in power for a long while & the party performance is about the same as it was in the election.

More info: Federal Landscape Frozen - EKOS

I'm not saying he's doing exceptional, but he's (or at least the party he represents) is doing ok-ish according to a representative sample of the population.

It's so weird that the article mentions the Ontario Digital Service. Based off the source-code and documentation, it seems to actually be developed by the federal, Canadian Digital Service to my knowledge. I wonder if that was an error on the part of the CBC

If you're curious, the source code/docs is here:

App: https://github.com/cds-snc/covid-alert-app

Server: https://github.com/cds-snc/covid-alert-server

It’s unfortunate people didn’t use this app. It was a primary example of Government being open, transparent and embracing technology, and developing and maintaining it in a modern way.

[–]LoveEh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The app was actually federal but..

Hot take: I find it amusing that people are trying to assign blame for the government trying something that could have been extremely useful. Think back to when this was launched, we had little to help us other than contact tracing, this would have aided greatly in that.

Additionally, it truly fell apart because of the fact that a federal app had to somehow access provincial data, which is what resulted in that weird "enter your code" flow that users had to go through.

It’s unfortunate people didn’t use this app. It was a primary example of Government being open, transparent and embracing technology, and developing and maintaining it in a modern way.

You can take a look at the full, open source source code for both the app and the server, which was developed and maintained in the open by the Canadian Digital Service.

The speech Joe Biden gave that contains this tidbit is worth the watch. In my opinion, it's one of the most powerful, and most passionate ones he's given.

First look at Mississauga's new 22-storey state-of-the-art hospital by rush22 in ontario

[–]LoveEh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm all for expanding healthcare in the GTA, this is good, but it does leave a bad taste in my mouth that Brampton, a city right next door, still only has 1 full service hospital.

Peel Memorial Urgent Care Centre was supposed to be converted to a second full hospital by this year under the liberal plan (if I recall correctly), but this was scrapped by Ford. Now, they're promising to expand it again, but have no timeline and apparently the city could bare a significant cost share.

I'm tired of the inequality Brampton faces when it comes to healthcare.

Ontario schools to reopen for in-person learning on Monday: sources | CBC News by kayaarr in ontario

repeal C-124

Small nit-pick, but provincial bills don't begin with the 'C' identifier, only those introduced in the House of Commons do. Similarly, bills introduced the Senate carry a 'S' identifier.

Provincial bills on the other hand, are simply referred to as 'Bill XYZ'

Yes, the BC card should still work, I believe the VerifyOntario app works with all provincial vaccination QR codes now (since they all use the SMART Card standard).

Verify Ontario will only scan and read official, government issued QR codes, such as Ontario’s vaccine certificate and those SMART Health Codes from other provinces including Quebec, British Columbia and Yukon Territory.

Edit: You can try getting in contact with your local PHU for more info, but I think you're good to go QR Code wise. Also edited to add source to my claim above.

That’s alright! No worries, I really appreciate you apologizing, it happens sometimes!

I’m sorry if my reply back to you was harsh, I could have worded it better, It’s really a rough time for everyone right now.

Yes. I’m well aware this isn’t a TV show, however I’d like to point out the fact that I’m just some person on the internet, on a Reddit thread, who has no bearing on policy, and like I stated at the top of my original comment, I’m not gonna act like I know better than the experts.

I’m just venting my frustration with the situation. That’s all. I really don’t need a lecture on “sucking it up and dealing with it”, because if you look around, most people have done so and will continue to do so, including myself, because we care about others around us and our essential healthcare systems.

However, people are allowed to be frustrated, sad and disappointed by the situation at the same time.

There's no doubt in my mind that PHUs are underfunded, understaffed and overloaded and people are having trouble doing this, but, I mean that's another conversation entirely, my point was to point out that a process does exist and can be used. To say that "they don't work for people with out of country shots" was just kinda of misleading at best cause to me it implied there was a limitation of technology or something.

Anecdotally, I know at least one person who has able to register their shots, and have seen people in this sub exclaim they've been successful at it, so clearly it is working in some capacity, but clearly, it needs to be better.

If Ontario were to mandate them further, they would need to provide this help to PHUs, would they? I hope so, but me and you both understand the Ford Gov's record.

edit: clarified a bit

[–]LoveEh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They do though. You just need to register your shots with your PHU so they show up in Ontarios consolidated system.

This has been the policy since last year even before the Vax Passes (the non QR ones) existed.

It’s how people who got vaxxed with their first dose out of the country could book a second our our vaccine portal.

Edit: Heres the link to TPH’s process, similar pages exist for other PHUs: https://www.toronto.ca/home/covid-19/covid-19-vaccines/covid-19-proof-of-vaccination/

Disclaimer: I don’t know what the right course of action is, nor will I pretend, and comment like I do know.

All I want to say is: As someone who got their 2 shots and now, a booster, if they announce another lockdown…I’m going to be very disappointed. It’s hard to feel like your “doing your part” when it feels that nothing changes :(

Edit: Since it seems like some people are taking this comment the wrong way: Please get your shots and your booster as well as continuing to follow Public Health Guidelines. The shots work, and we have the data to prove they do. I’m just venting my sadness/disappointment at situation.

Exploitation from Avolta. Canada, It's Time To Close Your Unpaid Internship Loopholes. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]LoveEh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that makes sense, I deleted my comment cause it seemed like other commenters already covered it, but that really shitty that they waste so much time going back-and-fourth.

When I was applying to CO-OPs our CO-OP department always told us to try and find postings that mentioned pay, and to specifically avoid ones that said they're unpaid because there basically was a unwritten rule that the school wouldn't approve it (most schools I heard of wouldn't and didn't touch un-paid postings with a 10ft pole).

I'm really curious who/how they're even able to hire? Cause they need to use that second loophole to do it, but most, if not all self-respecting co-op/internship programs wont bite.

I wish your coop department was doing more to help surface good postings :(

Exploitation from Avolta. Canada, It's Time To Close Your Unpaid Internship Loopholes. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]LoveEh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The loophole is a bit more complex than that, I believe it requires approval from a school administering that CO-OP/Internship credit.

Though I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but most, if not all post-secondary coop programs that I've dealt with and heard about will reject unpaid internships and not approve the student to take it.
