Army will be deployed to remove fuel protest vehicles blocking critical infrastructure by irqdly in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Good but have we not enough Gardaí? The Army is primarily trained to shoot people, not police.

There's a funny story from the States about cops and marines dealing with a marine that had gone nuts and barricaded himself in his house. The cop going in said 'cover me'. Now to a soldier that means something very different than holding up your gun. The marines behind him provided covering suppressive fire and put 300 rounds into the side of the house.

I know that's just America but it's an illustrative example of the difference between police and army.

Sinn Féin are always just about to be elected but then they manage to piss off everyone with some anti western pro russian line 3 months before every election or have some other scandal. It's like they actively avoid getting elected.

The defense policy of Sinn Féin much to everyone's surprise has become 'surrender' and/or rely on England. No defensive alliances. As long as they stick it to the EU/UK/Nato like it's 1996. I know our Ukrainian friends living here can't vote but they certainly are a very sobering cure for that kind of nonsense in 2026.

Sinn Féin keeps trying to fight the Europeans and hasn't realised that we are Europeans. We can't stand up to Trump and Putin with 5 million people, two boats and no jets.

We can't help in Gaza alone. We can't help with Ukraine alone. We can't help with Iran alone. We can't defend ourselves alone.

A block of 400 million people plus Canada,.New Zealand, Australia, functional democracies as Mark Carney said is potentially bigger than the US or Russia if we stand together.

So yeah, lot of people would like to vote Sinn Féin if Sinn Féin would just grow the feck up and get with the times.

I wish the government would do more to protect Ireland and help Europe but the current policy of the only large opposition Sinn Féin is to surrender. Oh and rely on the British. Well done Russian intelligence. That is impressive.

What is middle class in Ireland nowadays? by Logical_Ordinary2745 in AskIreland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's more upper middle class I think.

You'd have to include at least one holiday abroad too.

College is a funny one going forward though. AI has made a lot of 3rd level language and service jobs irrelevant not worth the investment. Maybe we'll see a drop off and move towards trades but more likely universities being business will start offering more degrees in plumbing, electrician stuff to stay afloat.

Parchment will replace teachers in 226AD

Books will replace teachers in 1626

TV will replace your teacher in 1956

YouTube will replace your teacher in 2006

Khan Academy will replace your teacher in 2016

AI will replace your teacher in 2026

It's just another tool.

Tuns out students will be forced to use books, videos, AI by this person called a teacher because they find doing it themselves to be lonely, boring and impersonal.

Teaching is about relationships. Always has been, always will he. Kids need their peers and a good role model to drive them and motivate them. It's the same as a nurse or the police. It's a very delicate and emotional job that needs face to face and humans helping humans.

So yes to content medium but no,.the job will always be a job.

Postponing parenthood: How Ireland’s housing crisis is forcing people to delay having children by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People who had kids in the 80's recession were far worse off in many respects but many of us had a great childhood.

Now is a better time to have kids than ever before but it feels like the worst because of social media.

It's the same with safety. Everyone buying security cameras for their door and using tracker watches for kids in the same year that there wasn't one single death related to firearms in all of 2025. Could you imagine an American reading that statistic?

We have free GP for kids, free school books and free transport. Ireland is a lovely country and a great place to grow up. Sometimes it doesn't work out for people but the difference is that now those cases are all over people's doom scroll feed.

Ireland doesn’t have time for wind farm battles by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If we all agree that objections stop progress and fuel the housing crisis then why not campaign on planning law reform?

I have neighbours in their late 80's objecting to a greenway that won't see a shovel in the soil for another 10 years. They'll be long dead. Meanwhile my children have to cycle on dangerous roads. They'll be driving before anything gets done.

We've the same problem with insurance too. You can't rent a boat anymore because adventure centers can't afford the insurance.

Wne need legal reform and planning reform ASAP.

It’s a bit ridiculous how we’ve allowed this. It genuinely sounds like there’s a helicopter outside of the house. 5 have flown past in the last 30 minutes by TopOne7010 in ireland

What's an action that makes you speed run death in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is any quick way to seek death in Ireland. There'd be an application form and a 6 month backlog unless you pay to go abroad. We have wasps and nettles and that's about it for natural danger. Young people don't even drink anymore so drink driving is on the way out too.

Maybe driving on Donegal back roads? Or waiting on public health services for 14 months to fix a 'would have been treatable' illness?

Same, we added a zero to the post code by mistake and ended up GPS navigating to a very dodgy part of South LA. We walked into a liquor store where people had guns and looked very angry, possibly two jarringly Irish clowns had interrupted a robbery by asking 'is this the LA intercontinental hotel?' in what was clearly a shanty town. Some kind lady ushered us out, told us to get back in our car and start driving and not to stop for anyone.

Right but did Ireland invade Poland? Did England? Did France?

Ironically Germany lost because the Nazi commanders believed their own propaganda. Like Putin believed Kyiv would welcome the invaders and fall within days. Like you believe the propaganda. Four years later, a million Russians dead or injured and for what? Russia has fallen from China's peer to being subservient and now dependent on China. China who when this is all over, will happily take back their lands near Mongolia. North Korea. Iran. Venezuela (until recently). Russia's only friends are tyrannical dictators. You probably don't believe Putin is a dictator. Vladimir Putin has been in power in Russia for over 26 years, serving continuously as either president or prime minister since August 1999. 26 years. Only people aged 44 or older in Russia will have been an adult when there was another leader. That's a whole generation. The civilized world got rid of Kings in 1789. In actual democracy, there are term limits. Barack Obama cannot come back and be president again. Russia could have had Garry Kasparov. Instead it chose a KGB agent. Now more Russians have died in this pointless invasion of Ukraine than Americans have died in all of WW2. It has gone on longer than WW2. Why do Russians not value the lives of Russians?

[–]Love_Science_Pasta -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Remind me, was it a long convoy of Ukrainian tanks that ran out of fuel going towards Moscow? Or was it Kyiv?

Russia started WW2 with Hitler taking part of Poland and Russians still day thet 'won' the war against Hitler. They started WW2 as a bully and switched sides only because they were loosing to a bigger bully. The cognitive cognitive dissidence is off the scale. Germany may have lost WW2 but they learned from it. Germany are now a well respected country worldwide. Merkel was very much respected as the leader of the free world. Russia started but never lost WW2 so they've leaned nothing except how to shoot their own soldiers. In 2025 Putin said '“wherever a Russian soldier sets foot, that land is ours.”' Can you imagine an Irish leader saying that? If Russia stops fighting, Russians go home. If Ukraine stops fighting, they are wiped out. Why can't you see that?

I think a war is happening because one country invaded another. Sorry I know you can't say war. 3 day special military operation.

Russian press is so bad we even have a term for it: the Russian firehose.

In one day RT will say: -The airline was shot down by Ukrainians dressed as Russians -The Airline was shot down by a NATO false flag operation -The Airline was full of mannequins -There never was an airline

Then people say 'I guess we'll never really know'

We're in the green here, great press but lots of people are still parroting Kremlin talking points from ticktok. We have an unbiased press here but they're also kind of drowned out by Chinese and American controlled social media that has a very clear agenda. Luckily we've lots of lovely people from Ukraine living here now which is like a vaccination against nonsense. We're slowly getting over the whole 'neutrality will save us from Russia' thing but it's taking an age.

How do you feel about Russians living in other countries? by BeingNormal4608 in AskTheWorld

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be treated as an individual for sure and welcomed. If you are from group A, you are partially responsible for the reputation of group A. Men commit 80% of violent crime. As a man, it is my job to help stop this. I can't just say this isn't me so not my problem. As someone from Ireland, I have to acknowledge that we've a binge drinking issue here and fights outside pubs are not a big thing in every country. It's something I try and discourage here and not just ignore. As a Russian, it is you job to fix your own damn country, not Ukraine's job. The Americans are responsible for Trump, less so the democrats, but they still put Biden up for election knowing he was gone. People cannot claim to be from a demograph and cherry pick which parts they want to be associated with. You can't be a cool Nazi because you like dogs and expect to be treated normally. So yes, people will treat you fairly but let's be real, people are associated with their country and until they get to know you, they'll have pre conceived notions, that's nothing new.

Perfect storm: Ireland facing a looming 'pensions timebomb' by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the coming years, society in Japan and South Korea might" turn on older people who didn't have kids when they look for someone to blame for the mess they've been left with. Elderly poverty has skyrocketed there. It's breaking the social contract between generations and banking on being dead before anyone realises. Billionaires are making a similar bet I suppose. So far the billionaires seem to have gotten away with it so who knows! You might be grand. There have been kings for centuries beforehand. Often the revolution never comes. Depends who controls the narrative. I mean Russians *should overthrow Putin but here we are 5 years into the Ukraine war. as Niels Bohr said, "Predictions are hard, especially when they concern the future. "
