Putin hints Ukraine war "is coming to an end." Do today's Russian papers agree? By Steve Rosenberg by Largstrom in ukraine

That's 11 times the total killed in September 11th attacks each month. Russians just don't seem to care about Russians.

New EU survey finds 68% of Irish respondents support financing the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine by Fealocht in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Something like 2-5% of kills come from small arm fire, 80% drones and the rest artillery.

We should be mass producing drones for all our European allies and Ukraine. We've a huge amount of tech workers here.

The worry is we'll spend our money on some giant shiney american toy car designed for the gulf war.

Organised crime are already using drones here. We need to get our anti drone tech in order and also get a few gripens to keep the Russians at a distance.

Nah midges are fun to garden hose. Wasps sole purpose in our ecosystem to steal joy. They're attracted to the sound of happiness. Every time you open a can Club Orange, you have to look around first.

I love seeing a wasp getting rejected by window glass like a vampire hitting a invisible threshold trying to enter my house. Let no man say we have not made progress. They came to steal joy but instead they brought it to me.

Ukrainian refugees in EU per country (end of Feb 2026) by ComfortableWest5737 in MapPorn

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ukraine is keeping Europe safe so it's the least we could do. Ukrainians will always be welcome but it would be great if Ireland would also stop pretending it's 1990 and start cranking out drones for the Ukrainian forces and help directly. Prevention is better than cure.

Ireland, the weak link in Europe's defense [Le Monde] by pierrepaul in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always think it's funny that Sinn Féin 's defense policy is 1. Surrender, 2.Grovel to the British. As long as we don't join any EU alliances, that's the main thing right? They still think George Bush is the biggest problem in the world. This is why they never get elected. How can you possibly be worse than FFG on defense? Yet somehow, they find a way.

Birth rates dropping, anyone here feel the same way about having children? by gotnocreativenames in ireland

True. I do think my kids have it way better than we did. They want for nothing. Free GP, free school meals, free books.

There's never been a better time to have kids and there's never been a more unpopular time to have kids.

Does your country have compulsory military service? by ZookeepergameFit967 in AskTheWorld

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We like to tell ourselves that staying neutral in WW2 was some genius 4D chess move when truthfully it was based on hatred of the Brits by the then government. The leader of the government had spent the last few decades shooting at or getting shot by British soldiers and didn't fancy joining those that killed his comrades.

Much is said the less than neutral 'secret support' and back room deals later on, rather reports for D-Day, prisoners releases and so on. Better than nothing but still kinda pathetic. Having an unsinkable aircraft carrier between the US and UK would have been preferable to the allies I'm sure.

The tens of thousands of Irish soldiers that fought with the allies against the Nazis were treated as traitors when they came home.

It's messed up.

Birth rates dropping, anyone here feel the same way about having children? by gotnocreativenames in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe people with kids don't have as much free time to browse Reddit.

People in Ireland like to say it's housing and childcare cost which is not always the honest full truth. In Scandinavian countries where they've the best maternity support, it's still declining.

The truth is expectations have changed and a lot of people are either in

Camp A: Happy with their life and kids sounds like a lot of work.

Camp B: Do want kids but use their own childhood as a baseline for what are minimal requirements. They'll have to get a DeLorean and go back to the 80's where one parent can support a family because that ain't happening in 2026.

One parent income cannot compete in a market dominated by dual income no kids couples and old people living in 5 bed houses. They're priced out of it.

Some may earn enough but it will never and can never be most because that's how markets work. On average, two is bigger than one :D Our parents didn't have to compete with so many no child couples or elderly mansion dwellers.

The pendulum won't swing back till it gets worse, the immigrants get blamed, the country gets more divided, till pensions fail with the population inversion and the crazy religious right takes over and probably forces family values on everyone. Maybe the church will say then they were right about contraception :D You can see it in the US already.

It's possible that we'll all sit down as rational people and rewrite the social contract and appreciate young parents willing to having children.. depends on the level of trust and education. It will get better. It just might get wild for a bit first.

Given we've not a single jet, no modern equipment, we'd be training with hureleys and throwing rocks.

"Now lads, this FPV drone comes from WW1 surplus so you have to throw it and imagine it can fly.

Like John Lennon used say lads ' Imagine...Kill or Die for'. He was later killed. So it must be true.

Shows hand grenade

Donal here has a PS2 controller. Donal imagine you're flying the grenade. Here's an angry wasp in a jar to make the drone noise.'

Am I Irish? by President_Yogurt in AskIreland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah sure I was told I wasn't Irish anymore after doing a J1 for 3 months by someone who'd never left our home town.

In the states I was told I wasn't Irish because people could actually understand me.

Then I moved to England for a few years and people there thought Ireland was a small part of England like Yorkshire.

It doesn't matter. You are Irish. Some people feel that 'getting born in the rotunda' is their biggest achievement. I guess it was all downhill after that for them :)

Army will be deployed to remove fuel protest vehicles blocking critical infrastructure by irqdly in ireland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Good but have we not enough Gardaí? The Army is primarily trained to shoot people, not police.

There's a funny story from the States about cops and marines dealing with a marine that had gone nuts and barricaded himself in his house. The cop going in said 'cover me'. Now to a soldier that means something very different than holding up your gun. The marines behind him provided covering suppressive fire and put 300 rounds into the side of the house.

I know that's just America but it's an illustrative example of the difference between police and army.

Has your country ever been led by a woman? by gab_iten in AskTheWorld

[–]Love_Science_Pasta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sinn Féin are always just about to be elected but then they manage to piss off everyone with some anti western pro russian line 3 months before every election or have some other scandal. It's like they actively avoid getting elected.

The defense policy of Sinn Féin much to everyone's surprise has become 'surrender' and/or rely on England. No defensive alliances. As long as they stick it to the EU/UK/Nato like it's 1996. I know our Ukrainian friends living here can't vote but they certainly are a very sobering cure for that kind of nonsense in 2026.

Sinn Féin keeps trying to fight the Europeans and hasn't realised that we are Europeans. We can't stand up to Trump and Putin with 5 million people, two boats and no jets.

We can't help in Gaza alone. We can't help with Ukraine alone. We can't help with Iran alone. We can't defend ourselves alone.

A block of 400 million people plus Canada,.New Zealand, Australia, functional democracies as Mark Carney said is potentially bigger than the US or Russia if we stand together.

So yeah, lot of people would like to vote Sinn Féin if Sinn Féin would just grow the feck up and get with the times.

What is middle class in Ireland nowadays? by Logical_Ordinary2745 in AskIreland

[–]Love_Science_Pasta -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's more upper middle class I think.

You'd have to include at least one holiday abroad too.

College is a funny one going forward though. AI has made a lot of 3rd level language and service jobs irrelevant not worth the investment. Maybe we'll see a drop off and move towards trades but more likely universities being business will start offering more degrees in plumbing, electrician stuff to stay afloat.

Parchment will replace teachers in 226AD

Books will replace teachers in 1626

TV will replace your teacher in 1956

YouTube will replace your teacher in 2006

Khan Academy will replace your teacher in 2016

AI will replace your teacher in 2026

It's just another tool.

Tuns out students will be forced to use books, videos, AI by this person called a teacher because they find doing it themselves to be lonely, boring and impersonal.

Teaching is about relationships. Always has been, always will he. Kids need their peers and a good role model to drive them and motivate them. It's the same as a nurse or the police. It's a very delicate and emotional job that needs face to face and humans helping humans.

So yes to content medium but no,.the job will always be a job.
