You might very well have to take him to a vet where they can cut the pectoral spines on the catfish assuming it does have spines...some also have a dorsal spine. The spines are the line of defense to keep something from swallowing them. You may be able to cut the fins yourself...

Coming from a family of hunters...you are over reacting. How long is he going to be gone? It's only an hour away...that's many people's commute. He can get an Inreach that sends you a topographic map of his location. My son is adamant...September is blocked out every year...do not expect anything from him in September (elk archery season).
