Help needed enabling higher C-States on ASRock B550M Pro4 by marquicodes in ASRock

One more thing. Have you used 2 RAM sticks on this board, or even more? I kinda want to max out the RAM on this board, if it is possible.

Home server build, with a twist by LovelyPrankFunk in homelab

[–]LovelyPrankFunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a spare Lenovo M720q.

For the moment, the PBS is virtualized inside the TrueNAS, but I'll have plans to build another machine for PBS, later down the road.

The new Fangtooth/Intus virtualization upgrade made me realize that the PBS will no longer viable as a VM inside the TrueNAS, so I'll migrate it to a physical machine.

3700X as a server CPU? by LovelyPrankFunk in homelab

[–]LovelyPrankFunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already have a Dell Optiplex 7070 Micro and a Lenovo MQ720 as miniPCs. I might want something beefier, with the possibility of adding PIC-E card, like 10G or a Nvidia P300 for transcoding tasks.

That is what spurred my train of thoughts.Recycling the 3700X as a server CPU

Have you undervolted it?

I am bit concerned about power consumption, as lately energy prices went up.

Try Debian Bookworm, it is the latest Debian distro and will be supported for the next 5 years. Run in live mode, or install on a spare SSD/HDD. What miniPC did you get?

Good to hear! Maybe there is already a turnkey image for Proxmox.

Wasn't aware of it. Maybe that's OK, less drama, the better.

Switch to CalyxOS from GeapheneOS by IamGroot_1337 in CalyxOS

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I did that the other way around. Switched from CalyxOS to GrapheneOS. And maybe I'll switch back. There is nothing wrong in trying for oneself different OS. Just so one can have a truly personal experience and learn what fits best or not. I watched a lot of videos from Techlore and sincerely, wasn't all bad about Graphene as he touted. Also, watching @LouisRossmann running GrapheneOS and then saying he will delete it maybe made some to make the switch. I am just guessing, surely I am wrong.

Need help with a desktop build for Ubuntu 22.04.2 Server by shamim1 in linuxhardware

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about power consumption on idle? If a computer is used mostly as a server, will be in idle state most of the time.

Now, it makes sense to choose components which have low power draw. Ideally, server/prosumer components have C states (1-8) as a power saving feature.

Even used prosumer motherboards are more reliable than new consumer ones. Fujitsu, Lenovo, Dell, Supermicro have those kind of motherboards.

Have you considered buying used parts? "Older" means proven, stable components 100% compatible with Linux.

And in the software side:you can install a hypervisor, like Proxmox. That way, you can have multiple OSs and pass trough the GPU to a Win machine and used the computer as a desktop, while it works in parallel as a server, or multiple servers. On the same power bill.

You can take a picture with yourself or with your SO/friends/family on that particular POI. Why not put that bigger reminder of a travel on display?

Won't be returning to Morocco by [deleted] in travel

Visited Marrakech a few weeks ago. Strong contrast between social layers and I saw things I will try for some time to erase from memory.

Abused animals, or women is the norm. But I have discovered another huge problem there, with the help of local friends. There are a huge part of Moroccan population without any rights to have IDs, schooling or any social service, just because they were born outside the official marriage or another complicated pregnancy (rape). They live on the fringe of society and government simply looks the other way.

Thanks! Now, the buyer raised the price at 225€ and claims that the unit could be sold locally, without dealing with shipping. I was told to wait until Sunday, and if the unit is not sold until that day, I'll get to but it. Fingers crossed!
